Great tip. I have a little pen which has been used for a broody pen with chicks, a hospital pen and a quarantine pen. I have a little hutch that can fit 2 hens in or w hen and babies but I can remove if I need it to break a broody. It’s big enough for them to move about in at about 6ft by 2ft but small enough to keep in my lean to shelter at the back of my garden. Always comes in handy 👍🏻

It’s crazy the amount of uses having a little pen for, really comes in handy! I can’t imagine what we would do without one. Whenever we get messages about hurt or sick chickens that’s always my first question if they can isolate them to start getting better. Really should be apart of a new chicken owners checklist of supplies to have on hand, along with a good first aid kit 😊

I have 2 different coops. 1 for chicks that I can put a heat lamp in, then the other one we transfer the About 8 week old to until they go to Main Hen House. And we use them for sick pens as well. We also have a large dog crate we use when we run out of spaces. From another video : We tried the head of cabbage on the string and they devoured it. It took all day but it was gone by night time! It was a great treat for them. We’ll be doing it again for sure. Thanks guys for the great videos and helps! Sorry I’m late I just found out I didn’t watch all of it Evidently I got interrupted.

@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s the easiest way to determine the gender before adult feathers grow in (males will have a curl on their tail) the females are that traditional loud quack! And males have a raspy whaaa. Oh the pen is excellent for that! If a chicken sees blood they will continue to peck the wound open or bully the injured chicken, they can cannibalize each other. Keeping them in the pen while their wounds fully heal insures they are safe. Thanks so much and thanks for watching!

Cute and helpful video! How many chickens do you have? How much food do you go thru? And how many eggs do you get daily?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I think at any given time as we hatch and sell little ones, about 60-80 birds. Our flock is 60. We go through 250 lbs of layer feed and chick starter combined a month. We collect about 2-3 dozen eggs a day. We do have older retired hens and roosters so not everyone lays 😊 they are pets so not expected to lay

Hello BBB. I need your advice. This year is my first year raising chickens and my husband got carried away. We originally only adopted 7 laying hens from a neighbor who moved out of state. 1 passed 1 week after arrival, 1 turned out to be menopause. so that left us 5 egg-producing hens and I was fine with that. 3-4 eggs per day was more than enough for my small family. Then 3 months later all of a sudden husband brought home mail-ordered chicks (6 B/C Marans) and 2 weeks after that 22 more chicks arrived also in the mail (wyandottes and ameraucanas). Those 28 chicks survive and healthy, but 11 of them turn out to be cockerels. That's like 1.5 hens per rooster. I don't know what to do with those roosters. I tried (am still trying) to sell them but no one want rooster these days. I have to put most of them in separate pen far away from the ladies because they started getting into competition and not only the hens but also myself got attacked. While I'm not intimidated or scared by their being roosters - guarding their flocks and attacking what they perceive as threat, I know how to subdue those over-active mini-dinos, I am still overwhelmed and I don't like to see them cooped up in that separate pen way in my backyard like a bunch of prisoners. They are beautiful birds - esp. the B/C Marans, they are 2x larger than the wyandottes and ameraucanas, they look too 'regal' to be penned in. At the same time, I don't want the ladies stressed out either - they were and they stopped laying from being chased around and ganged up by 3-4 roosters at once, in this heat, until I took those roosters to the far-away coop 3 weeks ago. And there's also a matter of feeding cost. What do I do with them?
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! That’s a lot of boys. It may take time but you can find good homes for them on Craigslist and Facebook groups. Bachelor pads do usually work as housing all boys together they normally do not fight if they don’t have competition for hens. But I understand feed costs being too high and wanting them to have their own flocks and a better life. I would just keep posting adds or hang a poster at local feed stores to hopefully find them new homes. Eventually the right person will see the ad and give you a call

Yes we have just hatched a bunch of call ducks in our recent videos, they are so sweet and cute! 🥰 oh yes you have much more bugs than us in the desert lol we caught a moth once. Good morning from Southwest Georgia! Duckling is so cute. Got a question where did you get the fly trap? And could you feed the flies to the ducks and chickens ? I would see if the animals liked them flies. ❤️❤️
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Good morning! Yes, we have given the dead flies to our chickens and ducks as a snack, but when they are more fresh. This batch of flies had been sitting there for a while now and thought maybe we should skip it this time and just dispose of them. The traps are from FlyFixed.com , we have been using them for three summers now and are a game changer. We have a few of them in our yard and some in our goat pen too! I have a new chicken issue for you. About anweek ago I notices one of my americanas acting weird, moving slow. Watching her I noticed lits if times she bends over to get some food she spits out a watery liquid. Not sure what to do for her, she wants to eat, but she spits up lots of times when she trys. 🤔
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Feel her crop, is it hard and full or is it empty? It should be filling up during the day and like a softball at night. In the morning check before they have eaten to see if it is empty as it should empty overnight. Is there an odor? Could be a sign of impacted or sour crop. Mucus coming from the mouth could also indicate respiratory illness if you notice other respiratory systems. Sorry your hen is not feeling well ❤️
@edge70742 жыл бұрын
@@BockBockBouquet it is soft as she has not eaten much lately, she hes started eating some lettuce this morning. But every 5th ir so times she puts her head down to puck something up, she throws up a bit of liquid. Quite a lot. I have her in a separate cage for her when the others seen her like that, they attacked her. So she is isolated. No odor. The one thing i can think of about a week ago i sprayed some heavy weeds on the property and maybe she got into it? She was fine before that. If so is there anything to do for her. She seems somewhat better than the lasf couple days.

I don't know I've had chickens and ducks together for almost a year and they've been pretty good since then.
@michellemichael16762 жыл бұрын
Our ducks and chickens share a run but not a coop. And the run is HUGE so the ducks stay by their pond and the chickens stay on their side where it is very dry. There have been no issues at all. From all the research I did, if you do it right, there isn't a problem.
@BockBockBouquet2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I’ve always kept them both together since very young growing up on my parents farm and we’ve never had issues. I know many people have always kept them together, probably since the beginning of their domestication. I wouldn’t worry, maybe just good husbandry is key as we clean their ponds often. 😊
@Jeuxvids12 жыл бұрын
Chickens should not drink the same water with ducks, And all the places where ducks roam, chickens should not roam and eat any on that land, Chickens should not share with ducks land, water, food and they don't sleep together in the same place, This is all from my personal experience and the results of the tests I did At the doctors I went to because of the infected chicken, These diseases that take time to show symptoms, Most of them affect the digestive, reproductive and respiratory systems and in the cloaca functions, You can put with chicken all kinds of other birds such as Peafowl, Guinea Fowls, Turkeys and Quails, except Ducks and Goose keep them away, Anyone read my comment, I gave you this advice so that your chicken does not suffer what my chicken suffered before, And I put what Kelly or Ricardo said in parentheses, I shared my experience that's all , prevention is better than cure and I wish health and wellness to all 🐓❤️

@@Jeuxvids1 Aw I’m sorry something bad happened to you and your flock ❤️ we have been fortunate to never have a problem. (I wouldn’t want to raise quail and chicken together for risk of bullying and disease transmission as they are more susceptible and very tiny). Sometimes there is inherit risk in everything. We free range our flock and wild birds spread disease and they are exposed too, from sharing waterer. Weighing risk is hard at times, but such is life ❤️ thanks for your input and sharing
