The original crash bandicoot was and is still to this day my favourite. Unlike the others it's a straight up platformer and it does it exceptionally well. The more that the game started adding minigames, abilities, time trials and weird gimmicky levels the more frustrating the series became for me. And sadly it just gets more bloated as the series progressed. The original was reasonably challenging and the levels were not at all repetitive because they only allowed 2 levels per theme as opposed to crash 2 and 3 where some level themes were repeated up to 4 times or more. I always felt Crash 1 looked the best out of the 3 naughty dog games because of it's better art direction. I love that in some levels like on Native Fortress you can see the other islands in the background. Or how you go Up the Creek to then reach the top of the waterfall to fight Ripper Roo or climbing the tower on Slippery Climb to reach Cortex's Lab. It's all these small art details which create a narrative as opposed to the warp rooms which meant the developers could be lazy and didn't need to create a world with many of the levels feeling thematically disjointed.

Completely agree Stephen, especially the repetition of the levels. I’d never played Crash 1 before the N Sane Trilogy, and it’s one of the key things I noticed when I was trying to decide between crash 1 and 2 as my favourite (can’t give it to Warped as it’s too gimmicky for me, although still loved it). Loved the differing levels on Crash 1. I think I enjoyed Crash 1 the most out of the N Sane trilogy (Crash 2 was better for relics but they both aren’t made for relics so hard to hold that against Crash 1).

As for Crash Bash……I didn’t even attempt to collect everything in that game. 1. Way too difficult and 2. My list: (Naughty Dog only) 4.) Crash Bandicoot 3.) Crash Warped 2.) CTR 1.) Crash 2 The reason I prefer Crash 2 to Warped is because it doesn't go overboard on gimmicks. Crash 2 has only 4 vehicle levels out of 27. Crash 3 is 50% vehicle levels with mostly bad controls. Still, I love all the games.

Crash Bash is the earliest game I can remember ever playing. I was only a few years old and played it with my mom, dad and older brother with the 4 controller adapter on the PS1. Good memories, still love the game today.

I didn't played all of these not even close. I played Crash Bandicoot 1-3, CTR and Crash bash. It might be because we had Crash bash the longest and got the other 4, years later, but, it will always be my favorite out of those. So many hours spend on that game, even before we actually found out there are more levels after waiting through closing credits. Which we discovered by chance, after playing it few times.

1) Crash Bandicoot The player only has a few options, spin and jump. Yet the developers get so much use from exploring those mechanics with a slow and steady escalation in difficulty. My only critique is that it is linear, but it makes more plot sense than the warp rooms in other games. Perfection in my opinion. 2) CTR The video pretty well covered all the reasons for this placement. Hard to see where a sequel would have gone aside from delivering more of the same. 3) Crash Bandicoot 2 Still a very good game. Introduction of the slide mechanic, which they were able to really make good use of and explore mechanically. The difficulty curve is much the same as the original, except at the end game there is less of a focus on repeating precise jumps and spins, demanding more singular instances of precise combos, throughout the levels. We also see a wider variety of experimental levels, such as the jet-board, zero-G, dark maps, and climbing rails; of which I only think one worked well, even though others are reused in later games. - The jet-board breaks up the flow of levels, while messing with the players character control. Creative, but a net negative. - The zero-G levels and boss rooms are similar to the jet-board, but with an added dimension, inverted controls and extend for a whole level. Irredeemable. - Dark maps, appear to be on the surface a reversal of the rolling bolder maps, except you don't have a way of gaining distance and the maps don't seem well crafted for it. Most dark maps feel like an ordinary level with dark-mode slapped on as an after thought. - Climbing rails slow the player without disrupting controls or breaking flow. They also add new depth to the slide as it replaces the jump as a way to avoid hostiles. 4) Crash Bandicoot 3 They added too many abilities and were not able to explore them and their combinations in a deep satisfying way. I wager most people who played this game don't recall all of the abilities, without having to look up which ones were in this game. They added flying and racing levels, which should have been their own games ( CTR ) as they handled poorly and were chores to do. They also included water levels both underwater and jet-ski, both were handled poorly, but I don't think either could have been standalone titles. Clearly worse than CB2. While CB2 and CB3 I rate low, most of the reason for that is how they chose to iterate on what worked by adding too much in the case of CB3, or deviating from the core game-play loop as first exhibited in CB2 and worsened in CB3. CB2 and CB3 are excellent in terms of level atmosphere and enemy variety, I really enjoy the look and feel of the Ruins level in CB2 and Egyptian levels in CB3. While CB2 and CB3 are by no means bad games, they are not as well crafted mechanically as CB1 and CTR. The introduction of levels and later mechanics, where the former have game-play flaws and the latter are overabundant and under explored, I can see the downgrade of the series over time.

I think the only problems I have with these rankings is the bias and unnecessary comparisons. Don't get me wrong, bias is good in reviews and so are the comparisons, especially in rankings. Like in some parts you would downplay certain titles because they didn't have feature X or Y that was introduced in a successor title, comparing is one thing but you also got to rank them on their own standing too (an example being your Crash 1 part). Also like crash tag team racing, which I agree has bad racing etc but has good exploration/progression/gun gameplay, racing isn't everything in that game despite the title. But again bias is good too, a lot of times people downplay titles like Crash 3 and Wrath of Cortex, for trying to re-invent the wheel in certain areas and I still believe those ones are gems to this day. Just genuine critisism and I'm glad you shared your rankings.

I remember how good I felt getting my first 105 in Crash 3, I never got all the platinum relics though, because I read in an old Gamepro (or similar) that it wasn't worth it. Maybe I should go back... Warped really is one of the all time greats

It's funny to see XS/Huge Adventure being placed so much higher than N-Tranced here, while I've seen other rankings do the complete opposite. I've played and completed them back to back recently for the first time, and I'd say they're pretty much equal in terms of quality, there are things I both like and don't in both of them, but I really don't think one is leagues above the other. Purple/Fusion is worse than both though, I wish that one only had the platforming stages.

Think my favorites are mostly based on the overall aesthetics of the games. I value games for how much I can hop into it and forget the real world exists. At the top there i have to place Crash 2 and Twinsanity and I think alot of the tie-breakers there lands on the music.

I’m right there with you. I really wish it got more love than it does. I’ve played it for years, and even have a world record in it now. I think most people just don’t enjoy it because of too many vehicle levels with annoying controls, not introducing anything really new gameplay wise, sometimes bad level design, etc. And while I agree with some of that, I think there’s some good in those areas too. It has so many unique gameplay elements, fun levels that can have just the right amount of challenge, etc.

I am honestly astonished that anything Titans-like ranked better than CTTR or N.Tranced... And even more that Purple did, despite personally enjoying it more. BTW, 4 is my favorite precisely because of the difficulty (I'm crazy both in skills and how much I'll push them), and have done everything minus dev times in all non-Titans games besides Boom Bang. Beat console Titans waiting for it to "get good", and it never did.

The Wrath of Cortex was the reason back in the day for me to get PS2. It decerves a remaster. I like also Crash 3 and 2. The last good Crash game that came out in my opinion was Crash Twinsanity. When I was playing Crash Twinsanity and had completed about 70% of the game and tried to load my save I couldn't load it. My save data had got corrupted for some weird reason and I still don't know why. I never palyed the game till the end because of that incident. After that game the series took a werid turn. . I bought Crash of the Titans in 2007. I regret that decision. I got rid of that game. It was way too different. It was good that that we got the N. Sane Trilogy.

I completed Crash 4 with 106% too. Which is amazing given the fact that at first I didn't even wanna challenge that because my best time relics were gold. But then I tried and tried, implied some tricks, and it turned out I'm capable of this crazy achievement of getting 106% on the game hah

Twinsanity is not only the most broken & unfinished crash game, but it's also terribly designed and has the most frustrating game design in the entire series. Find it really hard to believe this mess is good in any way when it has unskippable cutscenes that can be retriggered and a terrible checkpoint system plus you can accidently replay sets of levels again. The fact the this rushed mess gets praised for basically ruining the integrity of the series is pretty sad. Twinsanity = overrated trash that shouldn't have been released for being unfinished.

Twinsanity belongs at the bottom of every list. Woeful game. Twinsanity made me get up as a kid, beg to go to the game shop, trade it in and get TMNT (not the movie one) and Wrath of Cortex (again after selling it). It was genuinely that horrific. So I’ve decided that any future child of mine will be punished by being made to play Twinsanity on my jailbroken PS3.

I still think max completion in Crash 2 + 3 of the NSane Trilogy is stupidly hard, even though everybody just seems to say 1.
