There’s something really pure and uninhibited in it that few (if any) records before or since have touched. They abandoned all pretense of “music” and focused on direction. Glad that you credited Pete with being one of the things that really make them stand out from other bands. I recall listening to a cheap tape dub of "Feeding..." in the '90s and thinking it was a different band after "Fight War Not Wars". There's the quick noise piece ("Women") followed immediately by "Securicor", which really has a different feel from the rest of the album. His tracks would have made a great EP but they also fit in perfectly with the 18(!) songs on that record. Also, it's crazy that they considered "Feeding" to NOT be a full length album! The funniest comment on Crass at the time was a cartoon showing a punk coming out of a record shop with the latest Crass album, throwing the record in the nearest bin and happily walking off reading the sleeve! A little harsh, but considering "Yes Sir, I Will", fairly understandable. For my taste, Penis Envy was musically the strongest, What the Fuck being truly haunting and claustrophobic, and Feeding of the Five Thousand was them at their most straightforward. I agree with Pete Wright being underrated, and he still complains that he never really achieved the chunky bass sound that he wanted. Crass were one of the few bands that deserve to be called "seminal", the only other band doing anything like them at the time in terms of pure independence were Prog band the Enid, whose albums were only available by mail order from the band itself. Great video!

Thanks for a great vid. You kinda explained why I've been feeling the way I do about Crass, as I've never claimed to like them much, but some songs just hit that nerve, and others I can sing along word for word. I bought all the albums in the 80s as a kid. And I think I was just turned off by the cacophony of Yes Sir, and the hippie tripe of Ten Notes, and just kinda set them aside and concentrated on Conflict...like Crass, but musically consistent. (I had the same feeling about the Bullshit Detector comps...they were legendary our part of Canada as they were basically impossible to get, and my heart beat a little harder every time I found one...and it was hard to listen to, especially the later ones, with the recording quality and musicianship just all over the place, and being the LP era, not really easy to skip songs...I love and hate those compilations)..who to do next? Why not Conflict? You can go into how Colin was roommates with the guy from AYS who went on to be prominent in the white power scene. (tho I think one of The Specials guys also roomed with someone on that side...it was a wild and turbulent time back then

Very cool video. Crass needs to be talked about. 1. The Feeding Of The 5,000 2. Stations Of The Crass 3. Christ The Album 4. The Best Before 1984 5. Penis Envy Crass-The Feeding Of The 5,000 Originally released in 1978 on the great UK label, Small Wonder. It was reissued in 1979 on Crass Records in a fold out poster sleeve and re titled, The Feeding Of The 5,000 The Second Sitting. This packaging would be used for the next two albums, the classic Stations Of The Crass and Penis Envy. The Feeding Of The 5,000 is an absolute and enduring classic punk album. Their far left stance finds Crass spewing out anthems against the system, war, abuse of women and religion. Check out "Banned From The Roxy". Steve Ignorant is in total command of his indictment of government and their protection of the rich and oppression against the poor. "Punk Is Dead", another indictment, this one against the punk movement in general, singling out The Clash and Sex Pistols as sell outs. Crass is ferocious music and they stake their claim as absolute leaders in the 1977 era punk explosion. This album basically started a movement and Crass took many like-minded bands under it's wings and helped them move forward. You can find many of these bands on the Bullshit Detector albums (3 separate volumes). They also are packaged in the fold out poster sleeves and released on Crass Records. The Feeding Of The 5,000 is a brilliant album by a unique and powerful band.

You are right about how crass played places where no band had gone before.I saw them many times in Bradford,Hebden Bridge,Todmorden,Cleator moor,Bristol,Birmingham and London.Pete Wright was probably the only one you would call a musician.N,A.Palmer the rhythm guitarist only played barre chords[i.e. one finger across the strings] Feeding the 5.000 is not technically an album but a 12inch E.P. playing at 45rpm.

@@BurntDisc little known fact, Reality Asylum was the B-side of the Crass single Shaved Women. The record pressing plant refused to press the song it was so anti religious. Crass compromised by having them press 2 minutes of silence. Crass were almost prosecuted under an old blasphemy law for the lyrical content of Reality Aslylum. Another fact, Dial House in Epping, Essex is where Penny Rimbaud lives and has done since the 1970s. It was something of a commune back then. Interesting video. However I don't understand the repeated censoring of the word 'penis'. This word is not offensive. It's certainly not a swear word, so why treat it as such? The word 'penis' has no overt negative connotations. It's not a slur. It's not an insult. It's not racist nor sexist (or is it?) Is it because penises belong to male creatures exclusively? Is your deletion of this word interlinked to the current 'trans ideology' craz? Is it regarded as too 'binary'? I'm genuinely baffled. Would you also delete/censor the following words - 'vagina', 'anus' 'breast', 'nipple', 'mouth' ,'lips', 'hips', or 'tongue' etc ? Do you consider words such as 'cervix' or even 'bottom' to be allowable? . I dislike foul language too, but 'penis' is not a foul word. It's not even course slang.
@BurntDisc7 ай бұрын
It's racist. Of course I jest 🤣 great question, I knew this would be a thing... It's purely because youtube is not my day job.. without going into too much detail (im saying too much than I'd like to already)...i have to make videos as if a customer is gonna stumble across my channel. That probably still doesn't make sense but I'd rather be too safe and over censor than under censor....I don't want a customer hear me say that word, even though it is pretty innocuous. I hope you can still enjoy my content regardless 😃

If you were listening to the Subs, the Ruts etc at the time hearing Crass was pretty scary in comparison.
