I like the way that as soon as Green sees the end zone with no one in front of him, he begins to celebrate with his arm up, even though he still has 30 or 40 yards to go. He knows already that no one will catch him. When you’re the fastest man in the NFL there is no threat of anyone running you down from behind. Darrell Green is an NFL legend. A total freak of nature. I can’t imagine how many TDs he would have scored as the regular punt returner? Gibbs never wanted to place him in a high risk injury position, like punt returner. He was too valuable to the defense.

Darrell only guy I've seen put his hand up from a good 55 yards out and jog faster than the guys sprinting to catch him

What strikes me about some of these clips is how rarely he’s actually running flat out. So totally confident in his own speed. Great video. Thanks for uploading

To say that Darrell Green was fast is an understatement! He was the fastest man in the NFL and one of the greatest Redskins to ever don the burgundy and gold! Hail to Darrell Green! Hail to the Redskins!

A,en Brother…. Usually, teams that win super bowl always have one player that steps up in those big games and Farrell was that guy. Most people know about his blazing speed since he was the fastest man in the NFL for nearly 20 years. In 1987 post season, Darrell was the guy that stepped up on those shit games to propel the Redskins into the Super Bowl. Who will forget the impossible punt return he stunned the Bears with? Or the last second save of a definite TD against the Vikings? Every announcer says that Darrell tore that rib cartilage vaulting that man, but it was the immediate stop and turn to the left that is when he grabs his side. I even heard him in an interview say that it was the fast cut he had to make right after landing from the vault, not the vault that caused the cartilage to get injured. Darrell would almost always point his finger up in the air after he makes an interception and sees no one between him and the goalposts. He already knew he had a TD because no one on the field that could possibly run him down. I remember watching games and seeing him pick off a pass and me and my brother would always scream “Touchdown!” while Darrell was still 40 yards from the end zone. What a player. He gave every Redskin fan some serious entertainment over the years. The first time they had the Fastest Man a in The NFL races, I was shocked at the announcers all predicting that Willie Gault or Hershel Walker would win and if not, a DB like Charles Woodson would certainly take the top spot. Not one of them mentioned Darrell as a threat. My brother and me never doubted he would win, because we watched him carve up offenses every week and knew how incredibly fast he was. Darrell Green was most likely the fastest man to ever play in the NFL. If not, it could only be Bob Hayes, but I still think Green could have beaten Hayes on field. Darrell was a true shut down corner, if there ever was one. If not, he was the closest thing to one because Green played at a time when some of the greatest receivers ever were playing. He faced hall of fame receivers like Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Chris Carter and Willie Gault and mostly shut them down all day, allowing the safeties to come up on the line and blitz or shut down the run. Barry Sanders always had his worst days when playing Washington and so did every receiver that ever stood across the line from Darell Green.

Willie Gault was an Olympian and on the 83 world champion 4*100 team with Carl Lewis and Darrell smoked him in the NFL fastest man comp. If he took track all the way, he would have won a medal in he 84 Olympics easily!

By the time I started watching football in 96 when I was 8 he wasn’t returning kicks or punts anymore. I always wondered why it was so hard to find more highlights of returns other than the one in Chicago from 1987. I guess cause they were called back. Lame. Best athlete to ever play IMO
@Wendy17719

The real reason is that Joe Gibbs hardly ever allowed him to do returns because they feared he would get injured. And Richie Petibon, the Assistant Head coach for Defense was very against it.

When you spike a ball and fall because you spiked it so hard.. that meant something! I’ve seen Brady do it more recently and you ask.. was that personal?! For skins.. it was personal vs Cowboys

Out of curiosity, would they have had Mike Nelms back on these punts too or was Green swapped out for him?

This debate is over. I don’t give a damn what none of you simple minded people think. Darrell could run a 10 second 100 meters. Boe Jackson has never seen the day he could do that. Bo was very fast over a 50 yard sprint Darrell could hold that speed for 200 meters. I’ve never seen any so called fastest RB ever that Darrell couldn’t run down. JesseOwens would get smoked by Darrell Green. Darrell was even faster than Bob Hayes.
