As somebody who does stuff with Mesoamerican history and archeology, Tlalocmon's design is impressively well researched. I've posted this in a few other places, but for people curious, here's a (relatively) condensed version of the breakdown, also with some updates and tweaks: Tlalocmon is based on Tlaloc, the Aztec rain and storm god. Tlaloc actually belongs to a broader archetype of Mesoamerican rain gods, all of whom developed over time from "Were-Jaguar" (tho some researchers give alternate identifications) designs seen in artwork from the Olmec, one of Mesoamerica's earliest civilizations. This Jaguar connection is probably why Saberleomon is one of the Jogress pieces, though it could also be that Sabertooth Tigers are native to the Americas, and apparently "Tlalocmon" in Japanese sounds like "Tiger" and "Rock". Over time, the wide slanted eyes and thick eyebrows, snarled lips, and bared teeth seen in Were-Jaguar iconography morphed into circular "goggle" eyes, a upturned/prehensile upper lip or hooked nose; and fangs; all elements variously seen in later Mesoamerican rain gods like Tlaloc (Aztec, though the name is sometimes used for earlier rain gods in Central Mexico like at Teotihuacan), Chaac (Maya), Cocijo (Zapotec), etc. This is represented in Tlalocmon’s design, where beyond its own large eyes, the two large concentric discs and rings besides its head evokes a pair of "goggled eyes". Below that, attached to Tlalocmon’s back, is another ring forming an open "mouth". Spurs on that ring, plus the dangling red earrings and gold necklace pieces emulate "fangs" in front of the mouth, making his whole design look like a giant Tlaloc face (alongside the amacalli crown mentioned below). Beyond those trademark facial features, some iconography commonly (but not universally) associated with Tlaloc is specific head ornaments, such as a heron feather headdress and crown known as aztatzontli and amacalli respectively, with fan or fin shaped ornaments to the sides called amacuexpalli, also worn by other water related deities. Tlalocmon has a aztatzontli-amacalli headpiece above the frame which form its ”goggles”, though the feathers are yellow-red rather than white. The amacalli crown on its design is specifically based on the Museo Templo Mayor Tlaloc ceramic vessel, albeit with the vertical points made to resemble the sunbeam/ray arrows seen on the Aztec Sun Stone (though this is an iffy motif for Tlaloc). Finally, Tlaloc is also often seen wielding axes (as is Chaac) or wavy staffs evoking or outright resembling serpents, which likely represent lightning bolts. This can be seen in Tlalocmon’s twin staffs, which fittingly emit electricity and water bubbles, while their shape likewise evokes serpents, with a front end resembling an open mouth with fangs and a tongue, a wavy middle, and a tail end with a bulbous rattlesnake rattle. As a rain god, Tlaloc was also often tied to agricultural fertility, with him frequently also carrying maize stalks or digging sticks; as well as mountaintops (Tenochtitlan’s Great Temple was also an emulation of the mythical Coatepec mountain where Huitzliopotchli was born), in turn associated with rainclouds. His wife, Chalchiuhtlicue, was the goddess of rivers, lakes, and springs (which were also tied to hilltops and by extension farming/sedentarism: City-state in Nahuatl is Altepetl, or water-hill!). She was associated with jade, a material indicating preciousness, water, agriculture and maize/corn. The blue-green color of Jade and Turquoise (which shared some attributes) was worn by Aztec rulers as well as the two gods, and is likely the explanation for Tlalocmon’s blue skin (though Tlaloc and some Tlaloque, see below, also sometimes have dark gray or black body paint which may also be the reason… as may it simply being picked because blue = water!). Both gods presided over Tlalocan, an afterlife inhabited by those who had died from water, lighting, or specific ailments and disabilities. This was a lush, tropical paradise of flowers, fruit trees, with many rivers, lakes and springs. Many hilltop botanical gardens built as estates for Aztec rulers such as at Chapultepec and Texcotzingo (which sourced water for its fountains, baths, and gardens from "Mount Tlaloc", a real peak with a mythical counterpart a la Mount Olympus) were designed as earthly recreations of Tlalocan. Tlalocmon's foliage is probably meant to represent this connection to agriculture and plant life. Finally, the Tlaloque were either aspects of Tlaloc/related water gods (tied to specific mountains, directions, and forms of weather), or his attendants in Tlalocan. They were small, like children or beings with dwarfs, or beings with other disabilities like Kyphosis (hunchback). All 3 of those groups of people were also sacrificed to Tlaloc and/or went to Tlalocan in the afterlife; though people with dwarfism and kyphosis, due to their connection to Tlaloc and the divine, also acted seers and advisors for rulers (not unlike dwarves and hunchbacks in the courts of European kings as jesters or advisors), which was both a position of both status and objectification. Sort of a dark subject, but it’s likely the basis for Tlalocmon’s diminutive body. So, to summarize: - Tlalocmon's large eyes and even bigger circular rings on his backframe represent Tlaloc's large "goggle" eyes and an open mouth, while the hanging earring and necklace pieces form "fangs" in front of them. - Tlalocmon has aztatzontli-amacalli headgear, and even (somewhat inappropriately) has those spikes shown as sun-ray arrow symbols such as seen on the Aztec Sun Stone - As a result of those things, Tlalocmon's whole design resembles a big Tlaloc face, which is especially seen in his sprite (though that's so low res it sort of looks just like a mask and less like Tlaloc specifically). - His staffs evoke serpents like Tlaloc's snake staffs (being wavy, with the ends even resembling an open snake mouth and rattlesnake rattle) and them emitting electricity and water fits him being a storm god - The plant life on his design is PROBABLY a representation of Tlaloc's connection to agriculture and Tlalocan being a lush tropical paradise - Tlalocmon's diminutive body is PROBABLY a reference to his association with dwarfs and children - His dark blue skin is MAYBE a reference to the turquoise and blue garments Tlaloc has, or the black body paint some Tlaloque have. - Saberleomon as one of his Jogress components is MAYBE a reference to Tlaloc and other Mesoamerican rain gods originating from Olmec Were-Jaguars. I do think some of this, particularly the things I noted as “probably” or “maybe”, could be a coincidence (the foliage could just be due to his ruin-like ornaments; the blue skin could just be because blue = water; the Saberleomon connection could be just due to to it being “ancient” or the pun, etc), but at least some of it is clearly intentional, and the sheer amount of other potential references implies they were intentional. If so, Tlalocmon may be the best researched mythological design in the entire franchise: None of the Royal Knights or Olympos 12 etc have this many references to their cultural basis! That said, I do have some criticisms with it’s cultural influences and design elements: As noted, the use of triangular sunbeam/ray motifs in the amacalli strikes me as a “the Sun Stone is famous so let’s just use visual elements from it”, without understanding the symbolism of those being solar (as well as calendrical, see note #8) motifs. More critically, I dislike how a lot of Tlalocmon’s ornamentation is meant to look dull and worn like stone ruins, and the design of the garments and jewelry just vaguely “tribal” (or Viking-esque, for his helmet? Not sure what’s up with that other than maybe to look like Oni horns above the “Goggle’ eyes and “mouth” since his fangs are curved, evoking demons and destructive spirits from Asian mythologies). This is a common issue with Mesoamerican influenced things in media. In contrast, historically Mesoamerican civilizations had massive cities with richly painted buildings, aqueducts, etc; and wore fine cloaks, blouses, tunics, armored jackets and warsuits etc with ornate garish colors and designs; and with elaborate jewelry made of gold, jade, turquoise, Iridescent glittering feathers and shells, etc. Tlalocmon’s garments reflecting that with being colorful and pristine, as well as more apt garment types, such as a xicolli tunic instead of the loincloth or collar-pectoral garment, and the amacalli or a Tlaloc-face themed headpiece being on Tlalocmon’s head directly rather than the “viking” helmet would make the design go from not just being thematically apt and symbolism laden, but *visually* authentic and evocative as well. Finally, Tlalocmon is simply hard to read at a glance: The amorphous shape of the leaves combined with his tiny body means he has no distinct silhouette. While I understand the leaves provide a “backdrop” for the Tlaloc face theme it’s design has, I actually think it makes the face harder to notice. I think the foliage should be toned down, or perhaps removed entirely aside from just a small plume, plus making Tlalocmon slightly less chibi in proportions (Less Midna, more akin to Ranamon) Despite all that, again, I'm really impressed by the amount of research that went into Tlalocmon, it's much better then I would have expected Bandai to do!

Agreed, Luxmon is adorable and a modern classic. The giant evil tentacles are why I LOVE BigUkkomon. I love some cute bur horrifying creatures so Ukkomon and its lazily ned digivolution are great in my book. Plus it helps that they have a story attached whereas a lot of new Digimon just premiered in the VB. I really loved Quantumon as a powerful Data Mega and interesting design. I feel like Vaccine and Virus have a lot of the strongest Megas so I reallt loved having Quantumon be a Data type and Fairy. Dijangmon is just freaky and creepy and great. I love almost all the New Century mons and learning about their inspirations. Same goes for the adorable and incredible Tlalocmon!

Cthyllamon is one of the small handful of recolour Digimon that I really love. However, I do wonder if Bamco and Toei can get away with using the name Cthyllamon. While Cthylla is part of the Cthulhu mythos, not everything in it is in the public domain. Infact, her creator is currently still with us!

(Someone else who isn't fond of the angel Digimon! Never thought I'd see the day!) The thing I like about Loogamon is that it makes use of the forehead 'interface' thing that I thought they'd dropped but I always kinda liked. Prototype Digimon tend to be very cool and have good lines.

I pretty much agree with your rankings from C to S. However, a small part of me wants to put Loogamon's evos in F. Not because of their designs, but because their names are bad and they get my tongue twisted. Ukkomon and Big Ukkomon get an S for me. The former is a suspicious looking clione that straddles the line between cute and ugly, while the latter is basically a eldritch being that may have retconned elements from the 02 epilogue. What's not to like?

Ukko appearing as a the first promotional picture for the 02 movie in 2021 or I atleast believe he was a part of merchandise in late 2022. Kinda weird to make him being apart of the digimon from 2023. Then Soloogar in 2023 will appear twice in the TCG and once in a dim makes worth to include in the list, but he is my least favourite of the designs. I appreciate more angel designs especially for Dominmon. Then included more digimon for the D-Brigad but I dislike Brigadramon, it should have been canondramon. Quanto and Tlacmon are very unique design especially for digimon. And weird in 2023 we got an evil Marinangemon and a digimon that looks like a beta-design and a lovecraftian verson of marineangemon. Will say the say the new rookie lv digimon from the TCG project looks like a solid A, just have to wait to see it with colours to put it to S or lower it down to a B.
