I enjoy the Altus Plateau the most. I'd have to place it at number 1. When I play through Elden Ring, I like to thoroughly explore each area and find high spots to look back over places I've been. Some of the cliffs give a massive impression of height and the view is amazing. When I climbed the Ruin Strewn Precipice and reached Altus Plateau, I looked over the edge and could barely make out any of the structures beneath me due to my altitude putting me over the clouds. The first time I got here, I just stood and reflected on everything I'd seen up to that point and asked myself just how big is this game?

I might sound like a loony, but my main complaint with Caelid is that there are too many checkpoints. I can’t go 6 feet without hitting a site of grace, and I think the safety of that takes away from the atmosphere. I think it would be more striking if the long hike through hell went for a little longer.

Farum Azula is my favorite region Coolest boss in the game (Malekith), the actual verticality of the level design both in how it plays and looks, but also its sense of awe While not as beautiful as other areas, there is this atmosphere about it where it feels primordial, prehistoric - it feels like you’re at the edge of the world where nobody has been before, and the sense of it gives you the feeling that you’ve reached the end. I remember opening up the portal to in it Liurnia before I ever knew about it, and I just sat on that little floating rock looking at it and listening to the grand-somber music that plays in the background
@RogueRanks5 ай бұрын
I'll be featuring it in my next video ranking the Legacy Dungeons, but an absolutely insane area that deserves a shoutout
@squidwardstesticles59145 ай бұрын
I honestly wish that portal in Liurnia wasn’t there. It would’ve been such a cool experience to wake up in the crumbling city after Melina burnt the erd tree without having any idea where I was, but instead I was just like “oh I’m finally here now, cool”. I mostly avoided teleporters in my first run because of shit like that. I feel it’s far more impactful to make the journey to a place and discover it organically than to just be magically teleported right in front of it, or in this case to be able to see it before you’re supposed to in the story. It feels like fromsoft spoils their own game for me when they do that.

I will agree that the Lake of Rot could have been more... but it will always hold a special place in my heart. Elden Ring is my first soulslike, so I was already fighting passed an intimidating and wholly difficult experience, and when I entered the lake of rot for the first time, and took in the lake, the thick red fog, and the tiny glimpse of a building peeking through the fog... words can't describe what I felt. I was trembling. I was in awe. It was both beautiful and terrifying for me. So much so that... I left. I was not mentally ready to explore that damn lake. Granted, I didn't know it was so small, and hindsight makes me feel rather silly in that moment. But I will never forget what that first impression did to me.

I would include a few more places that I consider regions in my ranking of Elden Ring open world areas. What I look for in areas is: memorable locations, interesting lore, and stunning visuals. 1. Liurnia of the Lakes 2. Altus Plateau 3. Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula 4. Siofra River and Mohgwyn Palace 5. Caelid and Dragonbarrow 6. Ainsel River 7. Mountaintops of the Giants 8. Mt.Gelmir 9. Deeproot Depths 10. Consecrated Snowfields 11. Lake of Rot
@GreatJoey915 ай бұрын
I'd personally move Liurnia of the Lakes down the list a couple of spots - mainly because I find the water covered areas a bit repetitive - but I can completely appreciate your argument for it. If I had to pick a top 3 it would be: 1. Limgrave 2. Altus Plateau 3. Liurnia of the Lakes

Liurnia at the top and Mountaintops close to the bottom is very surprising to me. I wouldn't have even put lake of Rot in this list but the bottom spot does make sense for it. Consecreted snowfield also deserves a bottom spot. The snowy theme didn't feel new and exciting like the other areas themes after Mountaintops had a similar one plus its pretty empty and I hate mechanics that obscure visibility. Those are the only areas I would say I dislike, but also for me Altus, Mt Gelmir and Mountaintops were better than the rest. Limgrave is fantastic, but its not meant to be the best it's meant to set a good foundation and introduce people into the game, which it does brilliantly. Siofra I would also probably put above Limgrave. That initial feeling of finding the elevator is amazing, but the area was quite small and underwhelming compared what I was expecting. Still great but probably above limgrave and below Liurnia is where it sits for me. Liurnia also is fantastic, I really like the landscape of a ring of cliffs surrounding a shallow lake, with a towering academy in the center. I honestly dont really have any complaints about it but I definitely prefer the more oppressive atmosphere of Caelid, and the approaches to Leyndell, and Volcano manor felt so much more epic to me than the almost puzzle of searching for the academy key to access Raya Lucaria and that's what sticks in my mind the most when I think back to those areas. Mountaintops, aswell, is more linear yes but that leads into this amazing crescendo after beating morgott of making your way to Fire Giant, burning the erdtree and claiming Destined Death from Maliketh and defeating Godfrey, and Elden Beast. The linear area proceeds what is fantastic dungeon followed by a boss rush and snaking your way through and up the Mountaintops of the Giants allowed this fantastic climatic feeling to build. As for the crows, I didnt see them as Mutated, and as far as I know nowhere calls them mutated. I always liked the idea that they were kinda like pigeons to the fire Giants. Just normal small birds and then they spread to Caelid after the rot because there was more carrion that they would be able to feed on. This is all head cannon but I'm just making the point that they didn't feel at all out of place for me and didnt take away from the stunning visuals of the area.

Not the biggest fan of how... little actually goes on in the swamp area compared to all the cool stuff you can find on the clearings to the side of Liurnia. I personally place Altus on Number 1 as it not only looks absolutely gorgeous, but it also has quite a bit going on within its levels. Also it has Leyndell, which, I mean... It's leyndell lmao.
