A writer of magic realism once said "I write high fantasy. That does not refer to sub genre but rather to the state of mind the author was in when he thought of the story."

Great video. The explanations for each genre were clear and straight to the point and were greatly complemented by great art that properly showed the imagery and feel of each of them. Also the icons used to represent each of the genres were one hundred percent on point. A good suggestion for a follow up video is one where you explain each of the subgenres of "punk fantasy: aether punk, quem punk, rust punk etc.

I like to think of low fantasy as how people felt in medieval times to be true. In medieval times the world was much more mysterious and you heard stories of magic, gods, mythical creatures, you didn’t know weather it was true or not. It’s fascinating that in the minds of those real people, they lived in a fantasy world not much more different than the fictional ones we read about today.
@wtfgebeurdmij299117 күн бұрын
@@ethangilbert7305 Wow great desctiption, exactly my taste. No offense to people with different tastes but i personally dont really connect with a lead character that is able to ride dragons, move their hands to create magical beams of light and just so happens to be the strongest, sexiest, smartest male in this world. 😂 But i do like the sense of adventure. For example lord of the rings books are to much for me sometimes, but the movie adaptations are just right. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you

I don't think High Fantasy = Epic Fantasy. These terms refer to different parameters. High and Low indicate the degree of the "strange attractor," meaning the amount of magic and/or the presence of the divine in everyday life. Meanwhile, Epic refers to the perspective or scope of the story, whether it involves entire kingdoms and nations or a smaller-scale context. For instance, The Stormlight Archives is Epic High Fantasy, The Shannara Chronicles is simply High Fantasy, and A Song of Ice and Fire is Epic Low Fantasy. By the way, I wouldn't classify Joe Abercrombie's First Law World as Dark Fantasy. It’s Low Fantasy through and through, focusing on characters' inner lives and political intrigue, where magic is extremely rare (even more so than in ASOIAF). At most, it might be labeled as Grimdark, though this widely used term isn't very descriptive. A good example of Dark Fantasy, on the other hand, is Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné series.
@instant.intellect20 күн бұрын
Thank you for your review. I think I phrased it poorly at the start. I might need to look it up again, as my sources mentioned that most epic fantasy falls under the umbrella of high fantasy since it typically occurs in a secondary world and involves grand, sweeping narratives. I wanted to highlight that relationship
@Degrad2115 күн бұрын
high fantasy describes the story beeing set in a fictional world. for example middle earth or westeros. Low fantasy means set in our world, for example in an underground society oder hidden from non magic beeings. You are right about epic tho.
@Riccardo-ej8cd2 күн бұрын
@@Degrad21 That's not the definition of low and high fantasy (even though it's so common used that it is wrongly reported pretty much everywhere). What you wrote is pretty much a consequence of the definition itself. In an high fantasy the presence of magic and magic creatures is so common that the world can't be really similiar to the real world, because those fantasy elements imply that the world followed a different path. That's why the high fantasy is usually set on different world (and when it isn't the geography of the world is meant to be the same, but pretty much anything else is meant to be different). In the low fantasy, on the other hand, the fantasy elements are so rare (and usually way less powerful) that they are basically irrelevant. They don't really have an impact on the history of the world. That's why it is usually set in the real world. For the exact same reason I wrote above, the high fantasy is usually associated with the epic fantasy (they're pretty much considered the same thing, even though they aren't really) and stuff like huge armies filled with magic stuff fighting for the future of the world (usually against some dark lord), while the low fantasy isn't associated with the epic fantasy and usually is about more personally stories, where the main character just defeat some kind of local minor villain
@Degrad212 күн бұрын
@Riccardo-ej8cd no. Game of Thrones is a high fantasy even tho magic is fairly rare.
@Riccardo-ej8cd2 күн бұрын
@@Degrad21 You're talking like it is like that because you said that so it is like that... GoT in some ways can be considered something in the middle, or even both, depending on which part you're talking about. The early parts feel like it's a low fantasy (even though it's epic and set in an alternative world, I said that generally speaking low fantasy isn't like that, not 100% of the times), but then you literally have zombies armies that's pretty much an hing fantasy thing. Anyway, as I said, you said it's an high fantasy like if it's a thing set in stone, why do you say it's an high fantasy in the first place

I would argue that Romantasy tends to have more of a fairytale element, often with a dollop of Fantasy of Manners (for example A Court of Thorns and Roses), whereas Paranormal Romance is more like Urban Fantasy but with the romance factor dialed up to 11. Hence the emergence of a new term for a distinct subgenre.
@ΕλληΦεαρινου16 күн бұрын
@@annelyle5474 Is the setting more of a Cross-world, Urban or High fantasy then? I think 🤔 Romantasy may contain them all. A Paranormal Romance that happens in any of those spaces. Urban, is like happening in our 🌎 hidden, in our neighborhood so to speak. So Twilight Low, would be in a 🌍 that is allegedly not ours but reminiscent of . So something Dystopian, Historical or Sci-fi. Cross-worlds, is self explanatory. Coming and going to and from another realm. And finally High. Where it's a completely different planet, geographically, historically and perhaps, physics's wise. Thanks for your comment btw. 🙂 Sorry for any mistakes. It can be quite confusing. ☺️
@ΕλληΦεαρινου15 күн бұрын
@@annelyle5474 Thank you for the clarification. Subcategorization (is that even a word?) is rather confusing if I'm being honest, cause I haven't read that much for awhile now. From what I could gather, Romantasy may be contained in different settings, depending where the Paranormal Romance takes place. For instance: Urban is when it happens in our 🌎 hidden, in secret, right in our neighborhood, so to speak. That's Twilight. Low, would be in a 🌍 that is allegedly not ours but reminiscent of it. Something like Dystopian, Historical or Sci-fi. Fantasy of manner, was it? Cross-world is self explanatory. Going to and from another realm (possibly fairyland?) through some magic threshold. Then there's High. Happening in a whole different planet/world altogether. Geographically, historically and perhaps even physics's wise. Sorry if I got anything wrong, this is just my understanding. Fair chances and good odds! 😉
@annelyle547415 күн бұрын
@@ΕλληΦεαρινου No, not exactly. Any fantasy subgenre can contain a romance subplot (just as scifi, mysteries, etc can include romance), but I would argue that Paranormal Romance and Romantasy are both subgenres of romance, not fantasy, because the love story is the main plot that drives the action. Most books categorised as Romantasy have a fairytale vibe to them, and are often retellings of classic stories like Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella.

I just want everyone to remember these are only categories. My book, along with most others, are never just one of these things. The story is the story. The world is the world. The characters are the characters. These are more about marketing than they are the writing itself. That doesn't mean you should ignore them, in-fact, lean into it to get the readers you want. If your book doesn't do any of these things, and you're writing fantasy, then you don't have readers. At the same time, don't get too bogged down with definitions. Are ASoIaF and First Law Dark or Grimdark? It depends on who you talk to. The same goes for most of these subgenres.

I disagee with A Song of Ice and Fire being low fantasy. As long as I have been aware low fantasy's defining characteristic is that it takes place in our world. So Harry Potter is a great example of that sub-genre. Also High Fantasy and Epic Fantasy are not necessarily the same thing. Epic Fantasy is a sub-genre of High Fantasy but a High Fantasy novel isn't necessarily Epic in nature. High Fantasy is simply a story that takes place in a different reality with no relation or acknowledgement of our world, it's completely separate
@instant.intellect22 күн бұрын
Low fantasy can take place in our world or in a fictional world that somewhat resembles our own. Game of Thrones could still be seen as low fantasy because, while it’s set in a fully fictional world, the magical elements-such as dragons and the White Walkers-are rare and often met with skepticism by the characters. In contrast, in high fantasy, such magical elements are a normal and accepted part of the world. You're totally right about epic fantasy; I just mentioned it at the start since it’s really close to high fantasy, and I couldn’t explain all of them in detail :]
@michaelbodell774022 күн бұрын
I agree with i.i that ASOIAF is low fantasy. Large parts of the plots and events are taken from actual history, and the magic is added to that historical context. And most of the interactions of the characters is non-magical political and family interactions.
@ΕλληΦεαρινου21 күн бұрын
I'd call it Mid-Fantasy. ASOIAF takes place in a totally different planet/star system but has plenty of historical and geographical inspired features from our own. Happy New Year, btw 😊
@RaoulKunz120 күн бұрын
@@ΕλληΦεαρινου I'd say ASOIAF is essentially a High Fantasy world that isn't aware of it's nature, or to put it differently: it's High Fantasy seen through the eyes of Low Fantasy characters. But I'd say it's HF by virtue of it's "Planetary Romance" traits of the completely fantastical world. Bu then of course things like LotR or The Wheel of Time would change genres because they are not taking place in a different world but rather a imagined past-history or a very distant future. Great job trying to untangle all the genres btw. I'd still say that the old 1920s-1950s all encompassing genre of "weird fiction" is still a good way to summarize the genres of imaginative fiction because it makes the inter-connectedness evident. Writing is a blend of everything. Categorizing books into genres just tries to accurately classify books into something we can more readily comprehend. Same applies for music. However, distinctive styles and genres do stand out in most books, even if others are more difficult to classify. For example, Game of Thrones has a lot of High Fantasy elements (Dragons, White Walkers) even though it does lean more towards Low Fantasy. Heck, you could have both High and Low Fantasy wrapped together equally, though I can't think of an example off the top of my head. There is no hard 'rule' that says an author has to stick to a specific genre.

The environmental impact of AI has the potential to improve over time, though it depends on technological advancements, just like any other industry. And AI doesn't just copy and paste other people's work ,clearly you haven’t researched anything about it, It’s a training-based system that learns patterns, styles, and compositions, and performs tasks based on what you teach it, This is essentially the same system we use in schools to teach kids how to draw, but the AI is 1,000 times smarter."

The hypocrisy of people talking about how bad AI is for the environment seem to not care about the damage they do by eating animals, driving cars and using climate control like aircon. Funny how the environment argument can be trotted out when it’s convenient and ignored when you see fit.

AI is so off-putting. I would have enjoyed watching this if it wasn't using a mixing machine of stolen artists' work. Any creator should really think carefully about where they stand on this issue because I know plenty of artists and authors who see this as a threat to our lives.
@instant.intellect20 күн бұрын
AI doesn’t steal,it learns patterns from the web and, with proper guidance, can create original work. With six years of experience in architectural visualization, I’ve seen how AI is starting to change the field and understand the fear and frustration many artists feel as their craft faces rapid change. At first I shared those concerns, but instead of resisting, I decided to adapt. I started researching AI, understanding its capabilities and looking for ways to monetize it ,This channel became one of my experiments, and to my surprise it has far exceeded my expectations. If you can’t fight it, the smartest move is to join it, adapt to it, and find new ways to thrive.

@@instant.intellect Adapting shouldn't involve having to use a literall machine to make art, something that is inherintly human by it's nature. Artist will lose theyre jobs because of techonolagy like this. It's soulless and cheap. Do better.
@instant.intellect19 күн бұрын
@CursedFoo I'm a full-time architectural visualizer, and I do KZbin on the side,so I completely understand how artists feel-we lost three background artists at the last company I worked for online because AI could do the same work with a monthly subscription. So go ahead and tell the CEO of that company the same thing. This kind of thinking has never worked in history, because big companies will roll over you and won’t care whether what you do is inherently human or not. Then, you’ll have to choose whether to fight them or adapt. All the Amazon workers were crying about how cheap and soulless the robots are, but guess who's replacing them now?
@CursedFoo19 күн бұрын
@instant.intellect that doesn't make this any less morally bankrupt. You're promoting something because you have to "adapt" that isn't a good enough reason to promote AI slop it's gross and distasteful to all the real artist out there. Not to mention very disrespectful to artist who lost their jobs (like the ones you know) you're not adapting you're promoting a system of souless slop cause you're too lazy draw something yourself or hire someone else to do it. AI will never be art, and the use of it no matter the reason is just ignorant and/or cruel to real artist who put their life to their work. Please do better, either here someone or do it yourself. You're a good writer and have good video ideas, please don't support this kind of thing.

generative ai uses massive amounts of data, including artwork from real human artists who did not consent to ai using their pieces, this also includes copyrighted artwork. please dont support generative ai programs like midjourney! if you are an artist, use glaze & nightshade to "poison" your artwork and help contribute to the fight against this form of plagarism :)

guess your right but they are really close since somehow grimdark is a subgenre of dark fantasy but witcher is a great example.

The AI is pretty evident. The script reads like AI. The images look like AI. The voice sounds like AI. I couldn't finish it. I'm disappointed. It's a cool idea for a video, but I'm giving my watch time to someone else.
