Fascism is actually more left wing in many aspects. There is a reason Mussolini was a huge socialist before he got into fascism. Fascism derives from the Italians word “fascio” which literally means “bundle” but is used synonymously with the word “syndicate” in Italian (look at the fascist icon - literally a bundle of sticks). Fascism in Italian therefore literally means “syndicalism” and is really just an Italian take on syndicalism, which generally goes under the socialist umbrella together with classical marxism for instance. The key difference between fascism and marxism really just comes down to nationalism vs internationalism. Fascism strives to implement socialism just within the nation state - the shared identity and culture or homogeneity of the people and the “cultural homelands” of said people bound together by a large authoritarian state whose job is to act within the collective “best interests” of said people in the name of national socialism. On the contrary, marxism generally wants to create some sort of workers’ socialist international union state in order to overthrow capitalism and achieve socialism on a global scale. Just simply calling fascism “far-right” doesn’t really make sense, since compared to traditional far-right political ideologies such as libertarianism, they couldn’t be any more different. In fact, fascism has much more in common with traditional far-left ideologies like communism and the aforementioned syndicalism. So what do we take away from all of this? That the traditional left-right political spectrum isn’t really all that useful in mapping or actually making us understand the different political ideologies (at least the more unorthodox ones).
