So, just to know what I'm aspiring to... So you do all these crazy (good) extensions, keep internal motion going, AND are completely aware of voice leading at the same time on the fly? Or would this be more like a Bill Evans approach where he would choose his voicings before attacking the lead sheet?

Awesome content as usual Noah! In your book Modern Voicing Dictionary, are there just the various voicings or does it also include exercises on how to practice them and include them in musical contexts? Sometimes the difficulty is not knowing the voicings but how to work with them between different chord progressions. Thanks!

Awesome video. A lot to unpack even with a moderate understanding of theory. What program are you using that annotates the notes on the screen as they are played?

Lol I feel like such a rookie, my brain farted when I saw that Cm7b5 since the transcribing software counted the b5 as a #4 it's like my ears even HEARD something that wasn't a Cm7b5 just because it saw that F#

Nosh, great information, inspiring! What software will dusplay the chords like on your video. I’ve always wanted a keyboard that would show this, NI, Yamaha, Korgand none seem to?

If the min7b5 is functioning as a iimin7b5 chord and you add a 9 to it then you are playing the major 3rd of the key despite being in a minor key. Do you think this is a problem because you’re not really providing the sound of being in a minor key?
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman Жыл бұрын
Hey, so in jazz, we really tend to think chord by chord as opposed to by the full key center of the song. It’s not an issue because sonically we are heading those notes against the ii root in the bass. So the 9 sounds diatonic to the ii chord! Make sense?

I’ve always thought that the 11th is the fattest (warmth?) or first extension to be used with dim 7..and that applies to half dim as well 7 ..The 9th, unless buried, sounds slightly strained. All these voicings you’ve got here are great !! Thanks, I watch all your videos ..
@NoahKellman

Thanks, Charles! Really appreciate that. I hear you on the 9- trust your ears! If it sounds that way to you, that's part of what makes you YOU and gives you your own original sound. Thanks for the comment.

@@NoahKellman Yeah I may have played Stella one too many times .. 9 is important in those chords and of course they are used together. Noticeable is the fact that the 11th nestles a -2 ‘below’ the b5 and the 9th nestles a -2 below the (-)3 .. These days for some reason, I’m finding the major 3rd (of any chord that has one) a little sharp .. and note that -3 makes a warm substitution. Like melodies that stay on a ma 3rd like “You Stepped out If a dream” etc. are hard to take ..You are great player and thank you for sharing your knowledge.. I’m a fan !!

Notice I gave you the info without providing a direct answer. Because direct answers produce a lazy mind. If you can’t see it after trying the example I gave I will explain it in detail. However if you have any prior experience the answer should jump out at you! Btw not try to be smart but I never had a teacher. I learned all on my own. I even formed conclusion that I later found to be right. But everyone is different.. Let me know!

Another great video! I was wondering, how many voicings are in the dictionary?
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman Жыл бұрын
Hey Gibson, in all honesty I haven't counted exactly how many. I can tell you it's 192 pages when transposed, so 16 pages of voicings in just one key. So, a lot :p If I had to estimate, I would say between 400-500.
