Bro! Your list is the exact same as mine wth! Of course the opinions of each one are slightly different but is the same overall. I thought I was crazy for not liking Howl's or Castle in the sky that much, but here you are, now I feel a little more confident about my takes on this films. I salute you man.

I also happen to have a plushie of Jiji, so my personal favorite Ghibli movie is Kiki's Delivery Service. I'd like to maybe see you rank Isao Takahata's movies in the future since his movies feel more grounded.

I do plan on covering Takahata’s work in 2024! Him and Satoshi Kon.

Good youtube algorithm suggested your channel, you deserve more views I liked your review of The Boy and Heron & The Wind Rises. I appreciate those movies after rewatching more. And you should do Takahata next! I feel like the last two Miyazaki movies are on the same level as Takahata, they leave the same bittersweet taste as after watching Takahata's movie.

It felt so damn good to see someone else like The Wind Rises as much (Though probably a bit more) than me.

It’s amazing how good all these films are that it’s difficult to actually rank them, kind of from the least great to the greatest. I think this is the first time I see someone rank the Wind Rises as the best film. For me, nothing tops Totoro for its beauty, simplicity and what I think it’s the best written children in the history of cinema, but of course I’m biased towards some of those elements. It would be great to hear your take in Hirokazu Kore-eda, probably my favorite (live action) director currently working.

I love Kore-eda! Hopefully when I get around to finishing his filmography, I’ll be able to make some videos on his works :)

I would like to hear some more about why The Wind Rises is so high because I think that was the most interesting placement on the list. I do think all of the things you said are strong suits of the movie but, to me, they are bogged down by how messy it all comes across. I feel like a lot of the “subtly” of the movie is lost on me because I couldn’t get into the characters quickly enough. It’s been a while since I saw the movie so my memory is not the best, but I remember seeing many of the quieter moments of the movie and not really feeling any emotion in them, seeing the aspects related to his craft and being disinterested, and even getting to the ending and understanding the moral issues that being an engineer during that time posed to him, but not really feeling the emotional weight behind it. I do really like the relationship and dream sequences in the movie, but those other aspects make this one of my least favorite Ghibli movies. Maybe a rewatch is warranted but I don’t think I can beat my first time seeing it in a movie theater by watching it at home in a laptop.

I honestly agree with ur opinion on howls moving castle BUT I think the part that we’re both missing is this sort of climaticness of the movie, like we don’t even rly get a chance to connect with howl or others since every time we see them i feel it’s so climatic and not personal enough but the little bits we see allow us to imagine what it’s like to be living such an adventurous life, like it’s all in the imagination when understanding howl and honestly same w the other characters :)

1:13 Actually, Howl’s Moving Castle getting last made me smile and hit the like button because 1) it’s a pretty ballsy move and 2) I absolutely agree. The film didn’t really connect with me, and I think other movies convey Miyazaki’s themes (conservationism and pacifism) better. Overall, I agreed with everything you said and had pretty much the same list, even though I haven’t watched all of Miyazaki’s films. Alhough, Ashitaka is probably my favorite character from Princess Mononoke rather than San, and actually I think it should’ve been called the Legend of Ashitaka instead; after all, it is mostly from his point of view and we don’t even see San until about halfway into the movie. I admire how he doesn’t really take sides and sees the good in both Lady Eboshi and the wolves. I also like how the romantic relationship of the protagonist is handled in both this and The Wind Rises.

That is a unique Ghibli ranking, but profound and enjoyable. The Wind Rises is creeping up my list as I get older and understand that life doesn't give you everything you wish. Sometimes in a good way, but also in a harsh way.

I feel like Kiki's Delivery Service hasn't had much success with younger generations due to shorter attention spans. I love the film too... it was my first Miyazaki film! Your list is nice... I've watched all those movies except for Lupin the third and your top film The Wind Rises

Nice ranking, but from stand point of approachability o the movies (I like to watch movies with my 10 year old daughter). Wind rises will be one of least approachable Miyazaki movie. Howl's Castle is definitely one of our top favorite on the other hand.

When did you start watching Miyazaki’s films? I saw my first Hayao Miyazaki film when I was around five or six years old in Spirited Away and shortly followed by Princess Mononoke.

My first Miyazaki film was Ponyo. We watched it when I was in school a long time ago.
