You could read Indy not realising who Mutt's mother is as Indy not wanting to think of himself as a bad/absent father so he 'refuses' to make the connection. He likely never wanted to be a bad father and generally sees himself as a good man, so by admitting he likely had a kid that he ignored/avoided (even if un-intentionally) might have been too much of a blow to his ego. However, in the film, it really wasn't handled that way and there is no indication the writers intended to go down that path.

People put to much weight on Indiana Jones being a film series rather than a collection of films that aren’t meant to tell a connecting story. Indiana Jones is not Star Wars. They are stand alone films that happen to feature the same character. Everyone knows they’re inspired by adventure serials but I don’t think many of you actually internalize what that means. Like with the Thrawn Trilogy for Star Wars, it's baffling to me that these people didn't just do the easiest thing. Which was to adapt something that was already good. Yes, often times the easy thing isn't the best thing. But since Lucas didn't really want to do an Indy movie for over a decade and Disney just wanted a cash grab with Star Wars...why not? But in both these cases, you saw the people in charge insisting they be the only ones who could do it, just for the sake of controlling it.

The one thing I really didn't like in Crystal Skull is Indy easily getting out of the refrigerator. Those things had latches that only opened from the outside. I actually enjoy Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’s not the best in the franchise, but it’s ok the same spirit regarding the 1930s B-Movie serials that the other three are inspired by as well as having the religious aspects in the film as well. Regarding the nuclear survival in a lead lined fridge, Indy has survived a lot of things in the first three where he should have died or moments that are a bit out there, such as ghosts that will kill you when opening the Ark all as long as you don’t open your eyes and look at the Ark, falling out of an airplane in a inflatable raft and being fine and centuries old knight guarding the Holy Grail. When Indiana Jones 4 continues with the unrealistic stuff seen in the previous films, people get upset, despite the other films not being very realistic in various parts the first place.

It's fitting that you chatted about Speilberg & Lucas' overreliance on CGI in this video since you covered BASEketball on your podcast. What does that have to do with anything? Well, back in the early 2000's when those directors used digital effects to "remaster" their older films, Spielberg was planning on doing it for the Indiana Jones films. It wasn't until Trey & Matt made that South Park episode critiquing this practice that it convinced him not to go through with the plan. He even sent those two a letter after the episodes aired, even if Trey & Matt interpreted it to be a backhanded compliment. That said, they have gone on record stating that it's one of their proudest achievements, along with going to the Oscars in dresses.

The whole practical vs CGI thing is an interesting conundrum really. Practical effects are more charming and likeable precisely because of their limitations and the inventiveness required to overcome them. Nowadays CGI can do anything, so the limits no longer exist. So if a modern movie committed to using practical effects and no CGI it would be deliberately handicapping itself, which seems fundamentally at odds with the very spirit of practical effects in which new tricks and techniques are constantly being sought after. It would be like travelling across America on horseback when you could just take a plane - impressive, but pointless. When limitations are arbitrarily self-imposed they just feel fake.

Ok so I saw Dial at the cinemas today - not much to say. It was a movie. Thought I’d give Kingdom a first try back at home and WOW. Difference is so apparent - This movie is so much more fun! Really enjoyed despite its flaws.

I'll still take Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (aka Indy 4) over a lot of other 4th films in a franchine (such as Batman & Robin, Halloween Ends, Jaws The Revenge, Home Alone 4, Critters 4, The Next Karate Kid, Trancers 4: Jack Of Swords, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, The Matrix Resurrections, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Dark Phoenix, The Crow: Wicked Prayer, Thor: Love & Thunder, Terminator: Salvation, Men In Black International, Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, Spy Kids: All The Time In The World, Wild Things: Foursome, Alien Resurrection, Deathstalker IV: Match of Titans, Silent Night Deadly Night 4: The Initiation, Return Of The Living Dead IV: Necropolis, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Vegas Vacation, Bourne Legacy, The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice, The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission, Smokey & The Bandit IV: Bandit Goes Country, Midnight Run: For Your Life, The Concorde: Airport '79, The Stepford Husbands, Exorcist IV: The Beginning/Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist, SEAL Team 8: Behind Enemy Lines, Poison Ivy 4: The Secret Society, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy, Omen IV: The Awakening, Meatballs 4, K-9: P.I., Ghoulies IV, Killjoy Goes to Hell, Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Species IV: The Awakening, Honey: Rise Up & Dance, House IV, A Dennis The Menace Christmas, Parent Trap: Hawaiian Honeymoon, Iron Eagle IV: On The Attack, Revenge Of The Nerds IV: Nerds In Love, Killer Tomatoes Eat France, Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled & Zombi 4 - to name a few awful 😝 4th entries in my opinion)....✌️

12:00 I always assumed that, the Skull projected a message to Indy saying that Oxley’s mind will be saved should he deliver the skull back to Akator. Then you might ask “well why DOESNT Indy tell the group that’s what he’s doing then if that’s the case?” I guess it’s more of a FEELING than straight up “oh this’ll solve everything” Could also be that Indy knows if they hold on to the skull to keep it away from the Russians they’ll just hunt him and those closest to him incessantly And no WAY they’re just going to let the KGB get the skull willingly and attempt to get any sort of power that they’ve clearly seen is NOTHING of this earth and clearly can’t be countered.

I love movies past, present and future. The only question for me is did I have fun and enjoy the movie? I have seen every Indiana Jones movie at least 10 times except Dial ... and I'm likely to see it many more. I liked seeing Harrison in his 70's. Even at the end when he was ineffective after being shot he manages a parachute and saves his Goddaughter and hat. Then of course there was the sweet reunion (I do confess that I would have liked to have seen an expanded end with the two of them back in their house enjoying retirement.

Reading the script it has a lot of enthusiasm and respect for the character of Indy. He’s not some tired old has-been, he enjoys life, there’s little details of his current life where he’s checking out archeology and enjoys it, and playing instruments to himself, small stuff like that.
@dawsynasay4841 Жыл бұрын
It was promising, but it was still very poor for a first draft. It would’ve needed a ton of work to get it into a state where it could be filmed.

Ask 'hardcore' Indy fans and they still hate ToD. I don't know why, since I think it's easily the second best after Raiders. Crusade is a good send off, but the toned down violence and rehashed themes of Raiders bogged it down. Then Skulls was a steaming pile of crap. Haven't seen Dial yet, probably never will. I mean, why would I need to see it considering I'd rather spend my time rewatching the OT for like the 500th time.

So two things about the nuketown scene. The first is that the Mythbusters actually proved that you could survive the blast in a leadlined fridge without substantial injury. The second is that even if it is crazy for an old indy to walk away from, remember that he drank the grail which healed his head injuries and healed his father's gunshot wound so you could say that its possible the grail made him somehow stronger.

This it's a really good dissection of Indy 4's writing problem. It's a common case of too many cooks in the kitchen. Tossing the screenplay around like a hot potato until someone finally drops it. I guess David Koepp got the short straw in this pulling.
@horizonmage_o1839 Жыл бұрын
Love this movie, but I agree with you completely. First half is fantastic, and the mystery about the Crystal Skulls is one of the greatest in all of Indiana Jones I think, but in the second half, there are like six different characters and none of them do much. The ant scene was still amazing though. I also think the finale showed too much of the magic/interdimensional powers. In Raiders, god himself did not appear Monty Phyton style to strike down the villains, in Temple of Doom, Shiva did not appear behind Indiana Jones to help him fight Mola Ram and Jesus did not appear in Last Crusade to shake his head at Donovan. Why? Because it would not just be too silly, but it would also ruin the magic. While in Crystal Skull, they showed EVERYTHING. They showed that the temple is a giant spaceship, they showed the alien in the brightest lighting they could find and they showed how everything just dissappears for some reason into another dimension. It would have been much better if the alien skeletons stayed like that, killed Irina (who could have used a gorier death imo) and only dissappeared themselves or something. And the overuse of CGI is a shame, because the practical setpieces like the cemetery and the tunnel leading up to the temple where the tribe people come out of the walls look absolutely amazing

I loved the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. I liked George Hall as old Indy. I did like how they brought back Ford when they spliced two eps together to make the telly film, but it's a shame they ditched Hall's bookends. Makes for a nice pub quiz question though, name all five actors who have played...Indiana Jones!

Harrison Ford didn't "injure his back during Raiders". Allegedly he & part of the crew got food-poisoned & thus had a hard-time finishing the scene where Indiana ends uo shooting the swordsman. Having said that, is it any surprise Spielberg seems not to know how to handle CGi? This is the same man who realized he could turn ET into a cg cartoon character & change guns into walkie-talkies - just BECAUSE he had a tool that could do that. Turns out Spielberg is great at happy accidents. Not so much w/over-planning things.

One issue I have with saying that the fridge scene is okay because the series has other unrealistic moments is that the face melting and heart ripping are possible due to god magic. Unless the fridge Indy hopped in was also imbued with power from the divine, it's fair to call it stupid and out of place.
@ryantrudell4686 Жыл бұрын
The wild thing about KOTCS is that you cut maybe 10 minutes out [gophers, nuclear fridge, a few cheesy lines], and add in the fact that Mutt is Indy's estranged son right when he first comes into the picture... this movie would've been a solid B to B+ for me, instead of the C- that it is.

I remember wearing my Indy hat to a midnight screening, and IMMEDIATELY being disappointed at the CGI groundhog. Also, the reason the fridge bit bothers me is how over the top the landing was. On paper, I honestly think I like the idea. But seeing it travel through the air and topple over and over, was too over the top. I was not able to suspend my belief to that caliber.
@handznet Жыл бұрын
It is real groundhog composited into scene and looks totally ok. Fridge is over the top? How about the falling from a plane on a raft? And then again from mountain to a river. Without any damage…

I chuckle to myself when people freak out over him escaping the A bomb in a lead fridge but suspend their disbelief at knight sir bus pass chilling out in a grotto for 100s of years protecting the holy grail. Don't get me wrong I love love love The Last Crusade. The thing that really bugged me about the Crystal Skull was apart from being a Frankenstein story was that part about the snake saving them from the quicksand, it was silly they literally run behind the tent and it was so forced and unnecessary. The bit of the characterization at the end of crystal skull was brilliant when they tease mutt in the hat only for Dr Jones to snatch it off him and the music to kick in was an excellent moment for the franchise.
