I still remember coming home and seeing my parents watching a DVD on the new big screen tv. The music was instantly recognisable and I smiled and said I’d be there as soon as I’d dropped my gear off in my room. My mum’s voice followed me down the hall, “I thought you said this movie was good?” I popped back into the living room and said “Yeah, Pirates of the Caribbean is great.” Dad then added, “it’s a cartoon and it’s boring.” Mum chimes in, “We’ve been watching it for half an hour.” I had to dash out and try to muffle my laughter. I came back in, red faced and with tears streaming down my face because I couldn’t stop laughing. - they’d been watching the dvd intro for half an hour! I fixed it for them and they did, quite enjoy the film. Happy memories….they still don’t know how to use the DVD player.

I think it is somehow possible that Irish Mums double as Yorkshire Aunties. My Mum was very laid back, she was born in Yorkshire, but she lived her early life and teens in Birmingham. However, both my Aunts (one who had no children and the other who had no daughters) were very like this. Taking a keen interest in their niece, who was sort of the daughter they never had, they kept a close eye on me. I recall telling them that I had got B+ in my English lit mocks and a B in History and one of them smiled and looked at her fellow Aunty and said "But we all know you could have got As." Long live Yorkshire Aunties and Irish Mums, in fact all good Mums, bless 'em. Although they should perhaps all carry a warning label. "We're annoying because we care."
