That is true, psychologically the more overused the less desirable something becomes. Lightsabers are essentially like mood rings to reflect the inner being of the wielder. As much as I like something cool and original, I think I would end up creating a green one haha.

Originally it was just meant to be blue for Jedi and red for Sith. Green only happened because they found that blue didn’t contrast well against the desert background in the early scenes of Return of the Jedi, so they changed it to green at the last minute. That’s why in most posters and trailers for RotJ Luke’s lightsaber is still blue. Purple only happened as a personal favour to Samuel L Jackson who wanted that colour. For a very long time those were the only colours that existed in proper canon, with others only being in books, comics, and games, but the they’ve been gradually introduced into canon materials.

The first time I learned that lightsaber colors have different meanings was when I first played KOTOR. The KOTOR games, especially KOTOR 2, go so much more in-depth with Star Wars lore than the movies or any show. That's where I learned the most things about the Star Wars universe, but they're probably not even considered canon anymore.

Luke’s lightsaber crystal is actually synthetic. It’s only because of how rare kyber crystals were during the Galactic Civil War, Luke used a red Synthetic crystal and turned it green using a forbidden sith technique.

Like many other aspects of Star Wars, lightsaber colors got their lore due to practical limitations for the movies. Luke was going to have a regular blue lightsaber in Return of the Jedi, but they decided that a green blade would stand out better in the blue sky during the Scarlac pit monster scene.
