This is one of my favorite movies. Especially as a black man. The brotherhood and willingness to hold one's self accountable, dealing with relationship trauma as a man, and the trauma of your upbringing and going to therapy for it all resonates with me. This movie also lowkey has a spinoff series on bounce called the Johnsons produced by D.L. Hughley

I watched this movie on Tubi a while ago and I loved it. You can tell that the writer of this film wanted to make a film about Black men that didn’t lean into a misogynistic perspective. What I liked about the film: I love how we got different representations of Black masculinity via Jackson, Derrick, Brian, and Terry. They were all flawed but they weren’t pieces of sh*t in my opinion. The fact we actually got a darkskin couple in a film. Usually in Black films it’s a darkskin man with a lightskin woman. Also I like the fact that the darkskin men in this movie were not the villains written to be hated. This movie showed two sides of the coin. In Jackson’s situation it was his father that traumatized him and warped his view of relationship while with Brian it was his mother. A lot of films these days try and play gender wars and put all the blame on a sole group. While I really enjoyed this movie I feel it would have been even better if it was a drama and not a romantic comedy. I wish they would have dwelled more into how Brian’s relationship with his mother tainted his view of women and I wish they catalyst for Derrick and his wife’s relationship problems would have been his mom being moved in with them and the whole h*ed thing just been a comedic subplot. But other than that I love this movie. I remember watching this for the first time and saying these are the Black men that I know.

My 2 cents - I actually prefer the previous format. I honestly love how you add commentary while also playing clips from the movies, watching the clips as you speak directly jogs my memory of each scene and makes me feel I'm watching the movie with you and we are talking about it as we watch. I loved that honestly. That said, whatever you gotta do to make it easier for you to keep the vids coming feel free to do. I can guess how time consuming it is to compile all those clips and add the counters and soundtrack etc to the videos so if doing a talking head mixed with the clips is the most practical for you - feel free to. I'll be watching every vid regardless.

Happy New Year. I have not seen this movie in a lone time & it’s the male equivalent of Waiting To Exhale. Here comes the fun facts: Morris Chestnut & Gabrielle Union were also in Two Can Play That Game, Breakin All The Rules & Think Like A Man. Morris Chestnut & Jenifer Lewis were also in Not Easily Broken. They were also in Think Like A Man with Gabrielle Union. Jenifer Lewis & Clifton Powell were also in Dead Presidents. Jenifer Lewis & Tamala Jones were also in Nora’s Nair Salon. Tamala Jones & Gabrielle Union were also in Two Can Play That Game. Jenifer Lewis & Marla Gibbs were also in Meteor Man. Jenifer Lewis & Vanessa Bell Calloway were also in What’s Love Got To Do With It. Morris Chestnut & Vanessa Bell Calloway were also in The Inkwell. Kim Porter is from my hometown. Next week’s review is Losing Isiah.

Confession: I remember when this movie first came out. I was 19...and I hated it. I hated how DL left his wife because she wouldn't go down on him, I hated how Shemar dumped his girl via a voicemail message, I hated how Morris left Gabby because she dated his dad once upon a time, and Bill...don't get me started. Fast forward to when I'm about 40 or 41, this film came on TV and I decided to watch it, just to see if my perspective changed over the last twenty plus years. To my surprise, it has. It wasn't fair for DL's wife to receive, if she wasn't willing to give (y'all know what I mean); Morris could've heard Gabby out, but at the same time, knowing that she once dated his dad is a bit...weird. I remember some subtle clues being dropped that Shemar wasn't quite ready to take that next step, and it was a bit clearer that Bill was jacked up thanks to family issues. Now I can say that I enjoy this movie. Great review!

Happy 2025!! I like this new format 😊 I haven’t seen The Brothers in so long and I was still a kid when I saw it. This movie is the male equivalent of Waiting To Exhale! I believe with Bill Bellamy’s characters, it’s in the contract (due to his off the wall comments and silliness). Brian definitely had mother issues due to the lack of affection from his mother (which I did think of earlier this morning). Common theme of parental issues, commitment and honesty. Jessie chop sueying that judge was hilarious 😂. Derrick and Shelia were just funny. Tatyana Ali’s character dropped some gems but were looked over due to her age. Now marrying someone 2 months after meeting them is insane. Very well spoken final thoughts and review! As for next week’s review, all I’m going to guess is LI?? This one is definitely tricky for sure..
