Actually the story about the gaslighting is wrong. The term 'gaslighting' comes from a story about how a wife let the gas stove open for too long and the house went on fire and after getting evacuated from the house the wife convinced the husband it was his fault because he was the one who left the gas stove open for too long and not her. Hence the word 'gaslighting'. We learn new things everyday. The source is that I made it up.

I think these are manipulations that are used in everyday activities and some of them are used even without noticing ,even the one who manipulate here doesn't know what they are doing, its happens like a defense mechanism. But the problem began to unfold as one began to do this regularly or in great scheme level, other than that more than half of these are just human nature.

Stonewalling and giving the silent treatment is often a good way to defuse a volatile situation, such as when a person with a choleric temperament is getting riled up and aggressive. Since there's no back-and-forth, there's nothing to "light the fuse" even further, and the conflict eventually dies down.

This is making me realize that the reason why I had no friends till I was grade 9 was because I was a horrible person. Thank fuck my friend of 22 years managed to stick with me long enough that they opened my eyes and truly changed how I treat others. I will admit that I'm still not the greatest person ever, but I like to believe that I've been doing better. I now have a lot of very kind friends who will stay with me and tell me off when I make a mistake, and will be proud of me when I take their lessons and put them to good use. I'm not the best, but I'm thankful that I've at least gotten better.

Let's not forget about the power of a little self-reflection in situations where one might be tempted to accuse others of these tactics: A person who is "Stonewalling" you _could_ be selfishly avoiding a meaningful conversation... or, they _could_ be trying to escape an uncomfortable interaction with you. In such cases, we should try to see whether our past communications would give them a _reason_ to be uncomfortable: are we often combative, emotional, or dismissive? Hopefully not, but possibly so.

something to realize is that some people who just unconsciously do behaviors similar to love-bombing and mirroring can also just be neurodivergent! im bad at gauging things you need to tell someone and things you should do for someone, for example, and oftentimes over or undershoot it unintentionally. i dont understand sociality _at all,_ and that's my personal experience with autism. i subconsciously might mirror some of another person just because deep down i need closer connections, too. if i hurt anyone, i will make it right. some things are just in peoples' nature

It’s very hard to be manipulated when you don’t care about others perception of your life. Okay you think I’m crazy? I know I’m not. Manipulation failed. You play games to get me to obsess over you or give you more attention? You’ll get the attention I feel like giving you regardless of what you’ve done for me. Manipulation failed. You are much more desirable that way as well, since people who aren’t manipulating you will see that you’re honest, stable, and consistent. Live your life your way, don’t let others influence your emotional/mental state so much that you act out of character or break your own morals or do things you wouldn’t do without their influence.

Everything that was shown in this video is part of why I don’t want to see my parents anymore. When I got big enough to defend myself from their spankings as a child, they resorted to fear and manipulation to get what they wanted out of me. The only reason why I haven’t left them yet as an adult is because of a financial predicament I’m in and I need to find a better job to completely support myself

0:55 if anyone is thinking about watching Gaslight, do it, it’s a great classic movie and the plot is so much more than the husband dimming the gaslights. The wife hears strange noises coming from the attic of their home repeatedly and the gaslights dim and flicker each time this happens. There’s a huge mystery involved and the acting is really good.

Gaslighting? Guilt tripping? Projection? Blame shifting? Playing the victim? Stonewalling? Mirroring? Are you sure this isn't a video about your average politician?

Unfortunately, I've been a victim of every one of these manipulation tactics. Also, I won't lie, I've used some of these tactics for revenge as well.

Here's a list of manipulation tactics that I know of and been collecting from different sources over time. Keep in mind that a few of these are only considered manipulation in certain scenarios and situations. Shaming The manipulator would shame the victim for something and destroy their confidence. Playing on Insecurities The manipulator could learn of an insecurity of the victim's and bring that up to destroy their confidence and make them more insecure. Aggressive Jokes The manipulator would make a joke that would hurt the victim and continue play it off as a joke. Over time, this can destroy their confidence and make them more insecure. Infantilization The manipulator would treat the victim as if they were a child, as if they were less than them. This can destroy their confidence as they start to believe that they really are less than them. Triangulation The manipulator brings a third party into their relationship, and uses the lack of communication between the victim and third party to remain in control. Projection The manipulator would claim that the victim is manipulating them, thus confusing the victim and making them start to believe that they were in the wrong. Threats or Coercion The manipulator threatens or coerces the victim into getting what they want. Guilt Tripping The manipulator would guilt the victim by expressing their negative emotions at a decision the victim is making. The goal is to get the victim to feel bad enough for the manipulator and have them make the choice the manipulator wants them to make. Invalidation of Feelings When the victim brings up their feelings or experiences, the manipulator would invalidate their feelings, perhaps by claiming that it's "not that bad" or "irrational", or brushing them off and dismissing them. This can cause the victim to feel unimportant and irrational. Passive-Aggressive Behavior Passive-aggressive behavior can come in the form of subtle digs or insults. The manipulator may bring up something that they know will hurt the victim, but do it in such an indirect way that it's hidden under a mask of politeness. Comparison The manipulator would compare the victim to another person, making the victim feel bad about what they lack in comparison. This can chip away at their self-confidence. Insinuation The manipulator may insinuate something bad about their victim, but wont elaborate. This makes the victim question what the manipulator may mean, and in turn, feel bad about themselves. Backhanded Compliments The manipulator would insult the victim, but hide it under the disguise of a compliment, thus getting away with insulting the victim. Love Bombing / Hoovering Love bombing, or hoovering, is when a manipulator gives the victim plenty of love out of seemingly nowhere. They might give them plenty of gifts, spend plenty of time with them, love them, understand them - it'd seem like their dream. This is the manipulator trying to pull the victim in, or trying to get the victim back into their life. Gift-giving Gift-giving is usually a good thing, but it can be a manipulation tactic. The manipulator may give their victim plenty of gifts, and then expect the victim to return that affection back. Or, it could be a sign of love bombing. Mirroring The manipulator would copy, or mirror, the victims thoughts, feelings and behaviors as a way to make the victim feel more understood and comfortable. Isolation The manipulator would, over time, isolate the victim from the rest of their family and friends. The manipulator could try to convince the victim that their family and friends are bad people, or even threaten the victim to stop spending time with anyone else. Silent Treatment / Love Withdrawal The manipulator would suddenly stop talking to the victim. Or, in the case of love withdrawal, might stop giving them affection. Ghosting The manipulator would ghost the victim. Discard / Reverse Discard The Discard and the Reverse Discard are two different things. In a Discard, the manipulator would adruptly end their relationship with their victim and "discard" them. But,sometimes the manipulator will do what's called a Reverse Discard and love bomb their victim in an attempt to get them back. Stonewalling The manipulator will give their victim no substance to work with when talking with them. They may give short, to-the-point answers and never truly converse with their victim. Shifting/Moving the Goalpost After achieving the goal the manipulator set out for their victim, the manipulator would never give them their reward, instead they'll set an even higher goal for them. Changing the Subject When the victim directly confronts their manipulator, the manipulator would simply change the subject and avoid having to give any answers to them. Blame Shifting The manipulator would blame someone else for their actions. Playing the Victim The manipulator, when confronted with something, would claim they are the victim in an attempt to get sympathy from others. Fake Moralization The manipulator would claim/believe that they are morally superior as a way to justify their actions.

You know what's even worse? Often, toxic and manipulative people also know all these terms, so they can use the little "system" of identifying the problem to their advantage and tag their victims with these terms.

Just realized my ex probably kept trying to gaslight me by trying to make me believe he never said a bunch of stuff (usually to justify his actions or to justify unfairly limiting my actions). Unfortunately for him I have great memory and could always find a written record or evidence of him saying/ doing the things he says he doesn’t “recall”.

Ok so I have a lot of issues with a lot of these. Stonewalling, silent treatment and love bombing should hardly be considered manipulation. Stonewalling and silent treatment are completely a personal and boundaries thing. Like if a person doesnt want to talk to they dont want to talk to you. They have no obligation to talk to you. Love bombing, the times this happens generally the gifts arent really appreciated then when the person giving them doesnt feel like theyre appreciated they back off but still kinda have those feelings. I dont really like these specifically because calling these manipulation gives ammunition to actual manipulators, the kind of people who care so much about other peoples supposed manipulation but not their own.

remember that things like lovebombing and mirroring are red flags, not red lights! some of these are manipulative no matter what but others can have valid reasons, so remember that you can have things that set off alarms without being a deal breaker on their own (red flags), things that set off alarms AND are deal breakers whether or not there are other issues (red lights), and things that dont set off alarms at all (green/beige flags)

maybe i just dont get it, but from what you said, projection doesn't really seem different from blame shifting. i actually thought projecting was more like assigning something that you don't like about yourself to others and pointing it out even if it isn't true

i have this thing where unless i know that Its my fault for sure I accidentally play the victim because in the moment I genuinely feel like the victim, and there have been moments where I do a 180 and go from feeling like the victim, getting more info and then realizing it was my fault and I take the blame

I feel like my brother has always guilt tripped, given me the silent treatment, used triangulation, used projection, used blame shifting, played the victim in fights he caused, and has used stonewalling to make me feel like I'm the wrong and has used all of these to make my sanity feel like its not real. Thanks brother, I love having to question myself with everything I do and having to feel like I'm the idiot! 🙃

I find it strange that triangulation can be used as a reference in terms of some school cliches or genuine clicks where they are in group's and the only reason why they let in another person problems with another with the entire group or some in the group is because "Well we are a group we should know each other problem's and work together" with it being usually the one that is kinda the unnamed chief of the herd pinning others against each other i find that it usually happens when the chief got a lot to hide Like genuinely a lot. (PS i'm not saying that's about all group's, your relationships issues aren't really my business if you want to complain to me that i got it wrong or even insult me, it's just an observation i've had from certain experiences and memories)

Although grey rocking (stonewalling) is the best defence against people that are narcissists. They finally pick someone else to get their narcissistic supply from and will leave you alone. I've gotten several narcissists to leave me alone doing this.

I didn't know silent treatment was a form of manipulation, cause usually after I find out someone is talking behind my back or they don't like me anymore or they never did, I try to go radio silent assuming that they don't want anything to do with me anymore so I won't be a bother And now this just sounds like guilt tripping
