Came for the Capcom games, but it's always fun learning about some old licensed jank. But I do want to add on some things to your coverage of the Capcom games (even if this video is like 2 years old) MvC1 had a mode that let you get a good approximation of the arcade game and it's tag mechanics, as long as both players used the same two characters (less to load into RAM). I believe you could still choose different assists though Marvel VS Street Fighter & Marvel VS Capcom (not sure about XMvSF) had some exclusive mechanics, such as being able to cancel special moves into supers, or even a super into another super! MvC1 also has some changes to the assists, such as letting you use yout "tag" partner like an assist, or picking an assist character as your partner and having no limits to how many times you could call them out (which is apparently pretty OP). You could also do a meterless Alpha Counter, which just seems ridiculous. While technically inferior to their arcade counterparts, I think it's fair to call these two a bit of a remix of the original, with their own brand of busted gameplay I also kinda wish you had mentioned the secret characters in MvSF and MvC1. Sure most of them were just pallet swaps with some different characteristics and moves, but it's still six more characters in each game This last one I'm not sure if it was exclusive to PS1 or just the console releases in general, but you could actually unlock one of Onslaught's attacks as a super for Mega Man, which I just think is neat The Japanese version of Marvel VS Street Fighter has an exclusive character named Norimaro, who was created and by the japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi. No idea why was made, but if you wanted to play as a scrawny japanese nerd in a Marvel game, he exists Sorry for making such a wall of text, I ain't good at compressing information

X-Men: Children of the Atom on the PS1 is an Acclaim effort, which is why it was ported by Probe. Capcom seriously did not want to do ports of their CPS2 games to PS1, so they either contracted it out or licensed the PS1 publishing rights away.

In Mutant Academy 2, if you try to grab Professor X it does a unique animation. Since his rigging is unique, he doesn't get grabbed like normal, and instead plays an animation where he counters your grab with his own. However, the character that initiated the grapple breaks free of the influence and Superman punches X in the face instead. Such a great round ender.

Great video. Just a slight correction on playable characters in X-Men Children Of The Atom as the PS1 version allowed you to play with Juggernaut & Magneto exclusively in the VS mode, you just have to input a code to unlock them. With that being said the Saturn version is still the way to go if anyone wants their Children Of The Atom fix as the Saturn version plays better and has the exclusive modes of Survival & Team Battle.

There were indeed some decent Spider-Man games before the PS1 outing. Unfortunately, they were few and far between. If you want to see how many of them were worse than average, I recommend checking out Farlands Design Den. It's a KZbin channel ran by a former Ubisoft game designer, and his ranking video series of Spider-Man games is a great time-sink. The Eastern European accent is the cherry on top. He also reviewed the PS1 game and gave it a good 78/110. And rightfully so, it's a fun game.

It was excellent at the time and probably one of the best games I owned for the console, but now it’s very frustrating to play. Spider-Man - I played the Windows version, which was a bug-ridden mess. Even looking beyond the bugs, I HATED the way you could only turn in 45 degree increments. Trying to run along the beams of a building under construction was pure frustration. Even trying to aim for the right building or something like a crane while swinging was annoying as hell. I found the controls so awkward that I quickly came to the conclusion that trying to complete the various challenge levels would end with me putting my fist through my monitor screen out of pure rage. Then there's the web usage, which required you to press a button and a direction at the EXACT SAME TIME. I can't count the number of times I fell off of something because I was trying to fire a web ball and ended up running forward instead. Would it have killed them to implement a slight grace period where you could press the button first and THEN a direction? I was fine with the simplistic visuals and more primitive gameplay, but I absolutely HATED the game engine. Spider-Man: Enter Electro - A while back someone found and dumped a pre-9/11 copy of this game, with the twin towers intact. I believe the only real difference is in the cutscene leading up to the final level. Anyway, it's not too hard to find a copy and it can be played in emulators or modded PS1s.
@lurkerrekrul2 жыл бұрын
After viewing a video comparison, the changes between the pre and post-9/11 versions of Enter Electro are; Four stage names were changed to eliminate references to aerial situations. Part of the cutscene before the final level, showing the twin towers, was blanked out. A bridge was added between the two rooftops to make it seem like one building. The window textures were changed to be more generic.
@SoliderBoy Жыл бұрын
pc port had many bugs if played with uncaped framerate but the rest sounds like skill issue
@lurkerrekrul Жыл бұрын
@@SoliderBoy The turning in 45 degree increments made the game much harder than it otherwise would have been. For example: You're on a girder on a building under construction, but none of the available angles directly match the angle of the beam. So you take a few steps in one direction, then have to change direction, take a few steps in that direction, change direction, etc. You end up zig-zagging all over the place like you're drunk.Or you end up constantly falling off the edge. If you're trying to swing to a smallish target like a crane, you can't line up the swing before you jump. You have to do the same sort of zig-zagging, but in the air. Then there were the times where you'd crawl up the wall, transition onto the ceiling, then back onto the wall, back to the ceiling, back to the wall, etc. All because of the perspective change causing your controls to change. And did the mid-level cutscene in the Catch Venom mission ever work right on any system? It screwed up when I played the Windows version such that I had to install the game on a slower system, load a save, play that level, save the game and then go back to my other system. I've also played that level in the PS1 version and gotten stuck inside the building at the end of the cutscene. Plus, I'm pretty sure I've seen videos of it screwing up on the Dreamcast and N64 versions as well.
@SoliderBoy Жыл бұрын
@@lurkerrekrul well that skill issue was a joke but i really dont remember having any problem with controls when i played it About bugs that bug during venom chase when spidey is running into wall after that inside building cutscene is related to the frames per second i remember two more bugs one when spidey was supposed to jump of the box hanging from a Crane but he didnt (when helikopter chased you) and second one which maybe was more rare cause i dont remember it that good but it happened during Daily Bugle scorpion cutscene before fight maybe spidey missed the window i dont remember basicaly if ur pc is too good u have to limit framerate If u have problems with pc games check pcgamingwiki there are always fixes for most known bugs
@lurkerrekrul Жыл бұрын
@@SoliderBoy I don't remember those other two bugs, but I had plenty of others. I wasn't running it on a super-gaming system either. It was a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 with Windows 98SE and a Geforce 4 (really, I think people said it was a Geforce 3 or even 2 in disguise) video card. I experienced; Random crashes. Sometimes the game would just stop responding to the controller and Spider-Man would keep moving in the last direction I pressed. This seemed to happen most often when I was on walls or the ceiling. If the game found a config file, it would load in EXTREME slow motion. By that I mean that it was like I was running it on a 30Mhz system. Just the opening logo would take a couple minutes to display, It would take several more minutes to get to the main menu and then when you pressed anything, it would take 30-45 seconds before anything happened. I had to delete the config file and then remap the controls every single time I ran the game.

Pretty unfortunate that even though PS1 got the nearly full Capcom crossover fighting game lineup except mvc2, the versions for this console are objectively inferior - input lag, lack of features, gameplay changes to accommodate weaker hardware, unstable framerate, some characters straight up not playable If you want to experience these titles proper, Dreamcast was the way to go as those ports are considered arcade or near arcade perfect, at least if you don't want to go to the real arcade bar or mess with platforms like FIghtcade
