I really enjoyed this episode! Kero Kero King looked absolutely fantastic - that aesthetic and the concept really got me going! I wish there were more clever little games like that around now that got the console treatment. Feels like that weird energy that the PS1 used to embody is now basically only sort of still alive on the Switch/Steam (and even then not really) In short - Frog Golf, yes very good

Yaaay! So I picked Love & Destroy because it doesn't have a lot of coverage for its notable if retroactive pedigree(same of Gunbike) and the demo size length. I thought the dual analogue support was a genuine innovation that ironically the PS1's seminal mech shooter, Armoured Core, wouldn't implement until it's 8th entry AC:Nexus(2004). Cheers, this was a good one Sean.

KeroKeroKing is freaking adorable and it gives me life. I like golf, I like frogs, I like cute things; this feels like it was made for me. Gotta admit, when I saw a kid with a hammer and a frog, for a moment I thought things were going in a much darker direction.

Did you know that the lead artist on the Mega Man Zero & ZX games Toru Nakayama has an alternate identity as Tetsuno Kyojin for the sole purpose of making NSFW comics in between games? He even snuck in a character from his pornos in the form of the villain of ZX Advent with Albert. Just don't look up his Ojamajo Doremi fan comic though unless you wanna puke.

Kero Kero King is great. I was into it so much I bought the official guide book. I consider it a zen experience, it's slow, but it's more like real golf in that regard. I find it quite chill. Almost like the walk between holes. Anyway, it's a great game. Before this game Yosuke Kihara had created this universe and released many interactive animations on Macintosh, and is still creating this universe 25 years later!

Neat, a Sean Seanson JOPS1G! Fittingly after I recently just checked out some PS1 game openings and found some really nice and bizarre/unique ones. Also congratulations to the 10th volume! Anyways, let's start... Game #1: So this was actually one of the games that actually had a bizarre opening and seeing the game in its entirety the opening was the least weirdest thing about it. The FMVs remind me of a mix of Super Sentai (go figure) and the FMV sequences from the PS1 game "Twin Goddesses". The game reminds me of Killer Instinct, Clayfighter and the obscure Japanese arcade game Reikai Doushi. Definitely interesting to say the least. Game #2: Ah, Harmful Park. Often makes list of rare/expensive PS1 games or shoot'em up games. I really should play this game one day because I love shoot'em ups and especially those. Game #3: So they put in so much effort for a game that utterly failed. Sad but I can also see why. Like you said, the camera isn't good whatsoever. Well, I guess when someone wants dating and mechs then they should play the Sakura Taisen/Sakura Wars games. Well, nowadays I mean where they are also on non-SEGA consoles. Game #4: When I read "Kero Kero King" I was like "Frog Frog King? Huh?" but then I saw the game and it immediately clicked. So yeah, I saw the game before but didn't remember the name. I definitely remembered Ribbit King when you mentioned it. Anyways, the game always reminded me of the jumping frogs game where you have to get colourful frogs into a bucket, a game that is quite popular here in Germany and it is in many homes that have at least one child living there and also in (nearly?) every kindergarten.

Congrats on 10 episodes of Japan-only PS1 Games! - Gokuu Densetsu aesthetically reminds me so much of Shinobi Legions/Shinobi X for the Sega Saturn... Like, it took me a moment each time you showed a cut-scene. - Harmful Park was nowhere on my radar until now. I definitely need to give this one a try! - I wonder if IntiCreates would be willing to give Love and Destroy another go, along the lines of Castlevania Rebirth. Or if they already have, and we just don't know about it yet... - KeroKeroKing looks like so much fun! I might have to try Ribbit King, instead, though, in the hopes that it respects the player's time more. Thank you for 10 fantastic episodes! They, and you, are amazing!

Oh my god, I had no idea there was a PS1 Ribbit King game! I loved the PS2 version when I was younger but got rid of it for some reason (or maybe it was a rental) so I will absolutely have to check this one out. Also, even with the gameplay and the length being as you described, everything else in Love and Destroy, especially the visuals, are wildly appealing to me so I will absolutely pick that up as well sometime. Also, Harmful Park seems a little too rich for my blood physically so the JP PSN store seems the way to go for sure. I've been wanting to get into Shmups more and this seems like a great one to start with! Love the cutscene style!

I feel like a sequel, even a spiritual one of Love & Destroy can really find a place in this age's gaming sphere. We have a plethora of dating sims on all platfoms, Steam is full of all kinds of them; Queer ones, horror ones, pigeon ones. A mecha one can really work these days imo.

I think Love and Destroy's biggest problem is that it doesn't lean enough into one side. As a dating sim feels very barebones, not even comparable to a visual novel. As a mecha action game, it's also pretty barren as it didn't really offer much in customization and variety. I agree though as a PS1 game it looks stunning.

The viewer wheel provided some games I've actually played this time. Well only Love & Destroy (not a lotta game time) and Harmful Park (beat it once or twice). I've heard of Gokuu Densetsu, but never played it or Kero Kero King and in the case of Kero Kero King, it's good when a game series later gets released outside of Japan. Shame about Ribbit King's price though.

As always with Japan Only videos, a very enjoyable one. - Gokuu Densetsu Magic Beast Warriors : Not interesting at all, I'd put it in the thrash list. Basic fighting game with nothing worse the time, the cutscenes are fun 1 or 2 minutes and the content of the game seems absolutly and completly boring as hell - Harmful Park: this is the FIRST Japanese game you pick that I already know about it xD Even if I heard a lot about it, seeing your point of view was very refreshing ! Also, I didn't know it costed that much, what the hell is happening in the retrogaming industry WTF people are going f-cking crazy !!! - Love & Destroy: Interesting point of view about a very strange game. Looks decent, but the flaws you described are kind of demotivating, but I'm still interesting on buying and trying it. - Kero Kero King: it looks beautiful and kind of fun, definitively interested on buying it. And it says a lot because I absolutly hate golf games ! I own Everybody's Golf on PS1 and I hated it ! As always, looking for the next episode. The game I choose for this list I think wasn't as fun as the games you played due to my lack of knowledge of Japan only games, if the wheel provide it one day I'll choose another one more interesting.

Kero Kero King is indeed really fun. Since it's better to experience classic games on emulators, I also set a hotkey to fast-forward slow parts where otherwise I'd have to watch them over and over, so your gripes with its slow pace makes me wonder if you sit through them, even having the option not to? I'm pretty sure Love & Destroy actually aims to run at 20FPS but even so it won't maintain that all the time, with such 3D visuals the console just isn't capable of reaching nearly 30FPS. There are a few other games which aim 20FPS as well, and quite a few PSP games, too. The good news is that emulators allow overclocking and setting the CPU to 200% or even higher can make these games run really smoothly, it transforms these games. Driver 1 and specially 2 benefits a lot from this overclocking, for instance. I find it interesting that many youtube videos like these assume those watching are hardware/collector enthusiasts, specially today. It's arguable that classic games from the 80 and 90's are more consumed today than in their heyday due to how accessible they've become. Also, having real hardware by my side, Saturn, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast or whatever doesn't render the best experiences anymore, emulation easily surpassed that, maybe not only for Saturn, so far.
@SeanSeanson
@SeanSeanson 9 ай бұрын
It's all down to personal preference really, and I'm never one to tell somebody what the ideal way to enjoy their games is. If you wanna overclock a PS1 game, crank it up to 4K, and stretch it widescreen, be my guest I'm not a hardware purist by any means. That being said, if I'm reviewing a game, I'll only ever critique it as if it's played on the console it was designed for. If the game has problems that can be solved by an emulator, great. But I find part of the charm is in the flaws and limitations of the console, how developers overcame those limitations or in some cases, didn't. There are important lessons to be learned from that, and that's why I choose to present games the same way that you'd experience them if you popped the disc into your console right now. Even if arguably, I could have a better experience by taking advantage of emulation.
@roberto1519
@roberto1519 9 ай бұрын
Yes, totally agree there, the review should first and foremost reflect the real experience as it's meant to be on real hardware. With that, I still think it is worth mentioning how such limitations can be mitigated or eliminated. For instance, Gran Turismo 2 received fan attention in the last years and we can combine both discs into a single CD, this can be used on real hardware. Using Duckstation, we can further improve it by enhanced LOD for cars, further draw distance, metric system for the US release, 60FPS and set analog triggers to act as real analog throttling/breaking. Personally I tend to prefer not to increase internal resolution for this era, using a good CRT effect is preferable in most instances.
