I started watching NBA with my old man when I was 7 in 1959, the year Wilt Chamberlain entered the league as a rookie. During the 60s and 70s the referees often called a carry but back then it was an inadvertent mistake on the player’s part, not a deliberate act to bend the rules. This trend to deliberately carry the ball seems to have started on the basketball courtyards when kids wanted to emulate the dribbling wizardry of Pete Maravich whose moving skills while dribbling was legitimate without having to carry the ball. To me, carrying the ball to bend rules in order to gain the advantage is not skillful, it’s sloppy and reflects a personality trait of someone who’s willing to cheat. Bring back rule enforcement.

I just want to point out that NBA refs judge a carry by the middle of the palm. If the middle of the palm goes below the middle equator, it's considered a carry, not necessarily if their fingers go below the ball. So, you technically are allowed to have your fingers go beyond the lower equator of the ball, so long as the middle of the palm doesn't go below the ball. You are also allowed to put your hand on the side and behind the ball. That is not a carry, so long as the middle of the palm goes beyond the mid point.

It's so pervasive, that it has dribbled (LOL) down to even my peewee bball. Every time they dribble, it's like they're turning the ball over in their hand. Do people think the overwhelmingly majority of players just instantly, and collectively, became Kyrie-level ballhandlers and crossing people up like they do nowadays! The game doesn't move that fast today , it's definitely a carry and it takes away from the honest flow of the game

It's all streetball now. Like to see someone show either how these same violations were being made, with no whistle through the decades. Stats and records, now, only have meaning amongst the time period when the rules were mutual

This one and players moving their pivot foot is annoying in today's league

I’m glad they are calling this now it’s way outta hand

They need to call it so that players stop doing that crap. Players will adjust.

Any time that the ball hand supports the ball, it's a carry, the same rule is in volleyball. Catching the dribbling ball is illegal af. This new wave, eoro style basketball is unrecognizable, to 80's kids

Morant 5:28,I don't believe the ref Didn't see it?You just hold the ball to the basket,no dribbling at all?

"weather or not you think it should be called". If they carry it should be called. Doesn't matter who does it.

Just FYI players have been pumping and jumping into a defender decades before Wade. Earl the Pearl was famous for it, for one

One thing that every person here must remember is that the problem is the officiating and not the players. If officials call them consistently, players could adapt and adjust to that. Players play by the rules they are at.
