The 90's and when NWA ended their agreement with TNA. That was truly a dark age for the NWA championship, nothing but nonstop jobbers holding that belt and devalued the hell out of it.(despite the fact I love Adam Pearce in the WWE as GM) Nick Aldis literally brought that belt back to life for awhile, with an assist from Tim Storm

For most of the title's history it wasn't tied to a specific territory. That really started with JCP and WCW. And of course they didn't learn from that decision or ECW.

Think Orville Brown was Mid-America (Gulas-Memphis territory) Thesz was Central States-Bob Geigel Whipper Billy Watson -Maple Leaf Wrestling-The Tunneys Dick Hutton and Pat O'Connor, not sure, maybe Hutton was Hollywood (Aileen Eaton & later her sons the LeBelles) and O'Connor was Jim Crockett Buddy Rogers was Capital Sports, later WWWF Gene Kiniski was Northland aka NWA All Star in Vancouver with Sandor Kovacs Dory Funk Jr was Western States owned by his father Dory Sr Harley Race was St Louis Wrestling Club with NWA head Sam Munchuck Jack Brisco was Florida - Cowboy Luttrell later Eddie Graham Terry Funk WSS like Dory Dusty Rhodes was Florida Tommy Rich was Georgia run by Jim Barnett at the time Ric Flair was JCP later Mid Atlantic, later WCW Kerry von Erich was Big Time Wrestling later WCCW later WCWA Japanese wrestlers were from AJPW before 2000 and none of the others matter :) Three big promotions that never got a champion were Pacific Coast run by ROy Shire in OAK home of the Cow Palace 20 man battle royal, Pacific Northwest in OR run by Don Owen and Big Time Wrestling-Detroit run by the Original Sheik

If you ask Flair, he's something like a 23 time world champion. It's complicated with all the phantom title changes. For example, Flair had to make an audible and drop the belt to Carlos Colon so that he could get out Puerto Rico alive. The title change (much like Backlund's WWWF title loss in Japan) was never recognized or acknowledged on television.

MONEY! Baba paid the NWA big money to hold it while Harley was on tour over there and then drop it back when Harley went back to the States. This is how NWA built up AJPW against NJPW back in the 70s as NJPW had a working relationship with WWWF that bolstered their standing. The one where Flair dropped it to Harley and Harley won in back in less than a month was a South Pacific tour and that was all Harley's idea which led to sellouts. But who in the NWA was going to 'scold' Harley Race? LOL
