To argue that Hogan wasn't the best and most important member is ludicrous. Not taking anything away from Hall & Nash as they were obviously very important pieces of the puzzle as well, but it's really no contest. Pro Wrestling as a whole exploded after Hogan joined.

Nah, anything but Hogan as number one is just wrong. There is a TON of revisionist history about Hogan. He was the absolute biggest name in wrestling at the time. Hall & Nash may have been cool, but they would have just been another tag team. The massive success of the nWo was because of Hogan. People tend to forget how big of a deal Hogan turning heel was at the time. There is a reason why people were throwing garbage in the ring. What happened after his career is completely irrelevant.

Hall & Nash, either as Razor and Diesel or their final forms in WCW, were two of the first guys who got me interested in wrestling. Not-so-fun-fact about Kyle Petty: Kyle never exactly lived up to the lofty expectations of his father, Richard Petty, one of NASCAR's enduring icons. He won 8 races in his entire career (his last being in 1995), and that 1997 nWo Chevrolet Silverado, while featured in multiple races during '97 and 1998, was either crashed or forced out of the race 4 out of the 7 Grand National Races (yes, this was his car for the minor league race as he drove a Pontiac Grand Am in the Winston Cup Series).
@mcj88
@mcj88 2 жыл бұрын
It really kinda feels like Kyle's cars were more memorable than he was, which I hate to say because he _was_ a pretty good, B+ driver at his prime:; the Mello Yello car he drove during the aforementioned peak years, essentially the famous _Days of Thunder_ car brought to life; the nWo car he drove that got him on this list; the Hot Wheels car he drove in the late-90s that most boys of that time (myself included) thought was the coolest thing ever; and then the assorted #45 cars he drove in his last 8 years, all in tribute to his late son Adam who died in a crash in 2000.

The problem with the concept was the impossible balance between being all the coolest guys in the business, who everyone would want to join, but then needing to grow to a size that would necessitate adding less-stellar talent. If the faction never grows, they can’t be seen as the threat that they are supposed to be, but having a company’s worth of less-cool members hang on their coattails just makes the faction seem less elite. And the longer it lasts, the worse that imbalance is exposed. It could only have worked as a shorter term storyline, but turned out to be just about the only time later era WCW decided not to tunnel vision their way into short-term booking.

I feel like Nash should be #1. He was the main “invading” member of NWO along with Hall. Hogan had success on his own in WCW before the faction started. He beat Goldberg’s streak as an NWO member, head of the Wolfpac, and even found himself on the booking team which was known by some of the viewers. I was an independent pro wrestler for 10 years, and at the tail end of my career, my tag partner and I took an existing stable, and turned it into an nWo tribute stable, complete with nWo inspired merch, and we were basically The Outsiders; there'll never be anything like the nWo again.

When Buff Bagwell was in a tag team with 2 Cold Scorpio he was very much seen as the future of WCW, by the time he was in the American Males tag with Scottie Riggs, he was seen as that guy who use to be tag partners with The Patriot. NWO Bagwell was a shell of his former self.

I remember being super excited when Luger and then Sting joined the nWo Wolfpack but looking back it was a bad idea. Those 2 should have stayed with WCW like DDP and Goldberg did. And hes right calling the WWE Gang Wars storyline lame. It started off cool as hell but got boring really quick. Could have been so much better. Sticking Savio Vega and Crush with a bunch of nobodies was the wrong move. The Nation Of Domination had all legit stars. Nobody knew who the other members of DOA and Los Boriquas were

For me it started going downhill with Bischoff, Vincent and then Mike Wallstreet (Id say Big Bubba but he joined after Wallstreet) Bischoff completely usurped Ted DiBiases role as the money man. I found Bischoff annoying and the promos where he just bragged about how great he and Hogan were got old very quickly. Vincent because they actually wanted to hire Kama/Godfather from the WWF for the NWO "head of security" role. An actual former bouncer who looked the part. Apparently they were going to give him a 6 figure contract, and when Vergil found out, he offered to do it for less (Pretty sure he only earned 50k in his first year and how many main event promos was he part of where he is holding the belt for Hogan?) and Mike Wallstreet was i think a week after Bischoff had demanded every WCW wrestler sign a NWO contract. So all of a sudden the NWO got a bunch of low mid carders who didn't look the part. It should have always just stayed a small elite group with less then 10 members and they all should have been ex WWF guys. Adding Giant to the NWO at such an early stage didn't make sense either as they were all WWF guys.

I gotta hand it to *Bischoff* those first 6 months of the *NWO* were brilliant. The time leading up to *Bash at the Beach* 96' a stroke genius. I think *Eric Bischoff* and a handful of others knew *Hall and Nash* were coming. *Sting, Macho Man, Luger and Henan* to name a few really didn't know because their reactions were genuine. Once they were later on let in on it that's when the ball got to rolling. *WCW* fans had no clue what was going on they thought that s*** was real especially seeing *Rey Mysterio* getting long darted into the side of a trailer. The emotions running at the time saw heels and babyfaces of *WCW* putting their differences to the side and band together. *WCW* could've dealt the killing blow to *WWE* because *McMahon* was and still is sooo out of touch with reality and petty. *Bischoff* and the rest just overdid the *NWO* angle among other things but, I'm happy to have experienced the *Monday Night War.* I can't watch wrestling now I don't feel the same about it when I was younger it's like a soap opera with more talking and less wrestling and over-saturated.

Yeah. The nWo plateaued in 1997, and grew progressively bloated and stale through 1998 to early 1999, as it grew into a generic stable of heels. I understand that ending the nWo with Sting's win over Hogan at Starrcade '97 would have been premature, even after 18 months. The angle was still the hottest thing in wrestling, and finding new ways to keep it going was the right call. But the Hollywood/WolfPac split just didn't work. Instead of getting an ongoing feud between the White and the Red, nWo Hollywood was mostly off and doing their own thing by summer 1998, leaving the injury-plagued Wolfpac to flounder around for a few months. There were a few midcard feuds between members of the nWo factions, but it was no longer the main event. Hogan dropped the belt to Goldberg, and then started feuding with DDP, various celebrities and finally the Ultimate Warrior before announcing his retirement on the Tonight Show.

I disagree with #1 on this list. Yes, Hogan was the game changer and shocked the world when he turned heel, but his matches were average at best and I really suspect that he bribed the ref in Starrcade 97 to do a normal counr so that Sting's victory over the dastardly villain lost its impact. Honestly I'd put Scott Hall in at #1, since he was the one who got the ball rolling in the first place. Give Hogan the #3 spot. I have no problem with Nash being #2.
