To me Michaels is unquestionably the best pro wrestler of all time, unrivaled. I'd agree with your statement 100% if it wasn't for Austin. His best Mania match was the famous one Vs Bret Hart. While I'm probably among the very few to prefer their S.Series 96 match, this one even if much more about the (awesome) storytelling than the actual wrestling, is Austin's best at WM. Also for its impact and importance.

The WM12 Iron Man Match is his best match IMO. It was Hbk’s 2nd WM chance to prove he could win the big one. He and Bret performed about every move and hold there was on each other, and still it wasn’t enough for either man to be pinned. Neither man wanted to give up a pinfall to the other. And when Bret has Shawn in the sharpshooter at the end, every HBK fan prayed he wouldn’t tap and when he didn’t and time expired, we didn’t know what was going to happen. Bret started to walk out, and it seemed it would be a draw until Monsoon ordered sudden death. Shawn finally caught Bret with HIS finish 2x and won the day. Great storytelling.

Looking back on the wrestlemania 12 iron man match. I understand why some people don't like it as it was slow building. Bret and Shawn were excellent in the ring. But even they would have been sucking wind by 30 minutes if they tried tackling that match with their usual fast paced style

The match makes perfect sense as far as two competitors trying to pace themselves for an hour. That is extremely difficult to pull off and they nailed it. Almost every other 60 minute iron man match has had to have a bunch of bells and whistles to make it work or needed to be televised featuring commercial breaks.

Unfortunately, the imho most underrated mania Match maybe in history is underrated here too: Ironman Bret vs. Shawn. I mean they Backstage didn't like each other. They had nothing to really work with (as they were kind of friends on-stage). It happened during a time, when Shenanigans were reserved for comedy matches and heels. And still they pulled of an Ironman Match that not only was watchable, but even great with all the stories told the technical aspect, the surprising tactics and so on. I mean, if Taker 1 was Shawn Michaels' Baba o' Riley, Bret was his Bohemian Rhapsody.

I met Shawn Michaels at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. Apparently he was fond of the restaurant and had a specific table he liked, and the management had messed up and gotten their days wrong, (it was Tuesday and they thought he was coming on Thursday or something like that). Anyway, the manager, completely embarrassed (this is a pretty nice restaurant) comes by and says “I’m so sorry, but we’d like to move you to another table if you could be troubled, and we’ll gladly compensate you for the cost of the meal and any other meal you’d like while you’re in town.” My sister and cousin were both like “Yeah that’s cool.” and I kind of played the asshole a bit. “I’m sorry, I just don’t understand. We’ve been here for 15 minutes - we’ve just ordered. Can’t we finish our meal here?” Then out of nowhere Shawn Michaels shows up next to the manager and says “Paul, these guys can finish. We’ll be at the bar. I got some time.” And I (being a big HBK fan) said “Oh wow, uh… I had no idea. Please feel free to give them the table.” Shawn was grateful, shook my hand and said thanks, then gave me a card with his number on it and told me to give him a call later. After working up the nerve, I gave him a call that night, and to make a long story short, we had a glorious 11 month love affair, man on man, that I shall never forget. Our bodies intertwined as one, and from the beauty of Morocco, to the French Riviera, to the snorkeling in the Galopagos, Shawn Michaels and I made glorious gay love to each other on six of the seven continents.

I will always imagine how many dream matches HBK could had if his carreer wasn't abreviated for so serious injuries. I've always wondered, with a 'if...", he had a 'mania match against The Rock, Randy Orton, or even some old school classics, like Owen Hart or Macho Man Randy Savage. But, he had so many unparalel 'Manias matches that this sounds irrelevant. Wrestlemania 25, Michaels vs Taker, it's not just the greatest 'Mania match of all time, it's a pro-wrestling masterpiece, a foundly memory of an long time lost good WWE.
