A New Zealand Army soldier reveals every piece of gear he would take on a 72-hour mission. Sam, a bombardier serving in the New Zealand Army's 16th Field Regiment, asked us not to use his full name for operational-security reasons.
While much of Sam's field gear resembles that carried by US service members, he shared some terms that many Americans may not be familiar with, such as "hoochie" and "scroggin."
In November 2023, the New Zealand Army participated in the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center training exercise hosted by the US Army's 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii.

So yes and no I’m in the U.S. Army and I did a operation with a New Zealand JTAC same as this guy and he said they get all this equipment when they go overseas for training but when he gets back he has to turn it all in and get his shitty old gear. He told me most the time he doesn’t even have NODs or a helmet.

I was LRS back in the day. And I carried so much more gear. and it was heavy and not so much snivel gear. We carried the MULE for Laser targeting, and used our Map skill before the Plugger came out. Comms were big and heavy with the SINGARS. That wrist info panel we developed in the 80's. using cardboard and 100mph tape.

Just to add some context, the soldier in question is a JTAC as part of a Joint Fires Team, which explains the radios and surveillance equipment. A standard infantry soldier would have more ammo and less radios and equipment.

And our webbing magazine pouches were those lovely canvas SLR pouches that were too big for three plastic noisey mags and tight for 4……and when wet the canvas webbing closure tab wouldn’t fit properly so you couldn’t close the pouch.

This guy isn't an infantryman - he's a bombadier. Specifically he is with 16 Field Regiment, which is the NZ Army's only artillery regiment, which in turn is divided up into two batteries, a HQ group and a recon element. This guy is a member of the recon element, he gets all the extra spotting/ optical gear because most artillery work is indirect fire aided by spotters and air recon. He can also laze targets for air and ground assets. A regular NZ infantryman doesn't have this level of kit.

You joke, But the French town of Le Quesnoy owes its continued existence to a few Kiwi soldiers and a ladder in World War I. It's a surrounded by a medieval wall and a moat and was occupied by the Germans. after being repealed by the Germans more than once in direct assaults, rather than taking the easy way out and shelling the town out of existence, the Kiwi's used a ladder to scale the wall and recapture the town.

Different ways of fighting wars means different weapon systems and types of munitions. As well as different environments and whether your forces will be deployed overseas or not. If it works for them great but at the end of the day new Zealand fights completely different wars to Australia and has very different needs for their armed forces.

I am a big fan of the Steyr Aug, but I'll be first to admit that the modern M4 carbine suits the needs of modern militaries for a lightweight modular weapon system. The Steyr certainly had merit decades ago when compared to the M16 A2 without optics, but I think a modern Steyr/EF-88 would only be viable if squads had a need for changing barrel lengths in the field (instead we see things like special weapons and upgrade packages for specific roles), or like Austrian and Australian efforts, were made to be modular to support dedicated optics and enablers.

The problem is the equipment by Western Armies had nearly doubled in weight in the last thirty years. So you had the situation in Afghanistan with troops carrying over 40 Kg of weight in temperatures in the 90s, getting ambushed by guys in sandals, equipment of just a water bottle, ammunition, and weapon. We need to talk about ,kit, tactics, because we cannot carry more, more kit as time goes on. Or am I missing the point ?

I mean the dudes in sandals practically live there. If you're out on patrol for hours, days, or weeks, you can't just abandon your post and go to the kitchen and make food. You have to carry food and all that equipment. The insurgents practically live there, they don't need to bring food or clothes when their home is a block away or in the same area. There's also equipment that developed nations have that aren't technically "necessary" but improve survivability and morale. Like plate carriers, the helmet alone probably weighs around 20 pounds. These things technically don't need to be carried, but we're not monsters and we prefer to give our troops the best chance of survival, these are things insurgents cannot afford and trade away for their weight issue. Developed militaries such as the US have been looking for ways to lessen the load. A few years ago, the US Army tried to develop a third arm concept which would be an attachment to help soldiers hold their heavy M249 for them. Another example would be the US developing robots that could carry loads for soldiers and travel with soldiers on patrols.

You’re correct, but the kit featured in this video is specifically for JTACs, who often serve as frontline surveillance and fire coordination. Since they need to stay on the front lines for long periods directing fire, they need to have more gear on them to account for that. The New Zealand army is also mostly specialized for Peacekeeping and some peer-peer conflict. It appears in this instance that they’re focusing more on the latter for their infantry doctrine (Probably due to the threat china poses to NZ’s pacific allies), which means they’re probably focusing more on combat capabilities as opposed to terrain mobility.
