You mention that all this is the result of research, and you don't actually have your own experience with Pimax, and it really shows in this video. Much of what you're quoting is Pimax marketing and not reality. Pimax has always had a niche customer base because their headsets have always had significant issues... especially stability issues... that average consumers would not tolerate. They have very high specifications, yes. And you did touch on a handful of these issues, but there are a lot more. Wielding a Pimax headset generally requires a dedicated and technologically capable enthusiast and a lot of patience for frustration. They're amazing headsets _when they work._ But getting them working and keeping them working is problematic. There are also some Pimax products you mention in the video that aren't actually real. Like the Pimax Portal was sort of released unfinished and was immediately abandoned by Pimax. Or the eye tracking module was released in a literally broken nonfunctional state and.. that was it. Pimax released a product that literally did not work and then abandoned it. Woe to anyone that bought these products. And yet the company has also released headsets with amazing capabilities beyond anything else on the market at the time like the 8KX (which was the one to get out of that whole older line). You speak about standalone on the Crystal, but be aware that its standalone capability is useless trash. You'll probably think I'm being hyperbolic with these kinds of statements in this comment, but I'm not. There are only like 6 games in the Crystal's standalone library, and they're all weird stuff you've never heard of. Nobody uses the standalone capability on the Crystal. Nobody. It's a dead feature. Crystals are actually exclusively used for PCVR only. The standalone capabilities were removed from all future Pimax headsets which was the genesis of the Crystal Light. The Crystal Light is a Crystal with the useless XR2, battery, etc stripped out which reduced its weight and cost _a lot._ This is why the future Crystal Super is definitely not a downgrade. And the standalone capability was canceled from the 12K as well. Still an interesting video though. I actually learned some things from it that I didn't know myself despite having used Pimax headsets for years (5K Super, 8KX, and Crystal). These days I've moved to Bigscreen Beyond and hope to never go back to Pimax. The Beyond is a solid and stable headset, unlike anything Pimax makes. It doesn't have quite the specs of the Crystal's absolutely gorgeous display, but it gets close, and I don't find the difference to be worth the headaches.

Oh, and the Crystal Light does not actually have 15 degrees less FOV than the original Crystal. Their optical stacks are actually identical. The difference is Pimax marketing claimed much higher FOV for the original Crystal when its actual FOV is 103. They're just being more honest with their marketing for the Crystal Light now and claiming closer to the actual. For that matter, Pimax claims 200 degrees for the 8KX and several other headsets, but the actual FOV is 160. (which is still way larger than other headsets)

I really appreciated your video! I was recently given someone's old beat up 8KX after they upgraded to the Meta Quest 3 and I was blown away by the 200FOV. I play mostly DCS guns BFM dogfights and really needed that extra FOV to see behind me. I had no idea that the 5K Super was newer than the 8K but after seeing this video I think it's something I will look into. I'm super bummed that 200FOV seems like a thing of the past now.

Great video! One thing you didn't talk about is the software. I think pimax softwares are pretty jank so standalone might be bad because of it where in PC people just launch steam VR and don't have to interface with a bad software much. Idk that's what i've heard.

I love your videos. They’re so underrated. Thank you for making a video on pi max they’re not a very well-known
@DesuVR5 ай бұрын
They're not well-known because people aren't recommending them. Each headset has some kind of huge dealbreaker flaw whether it has to do with software, ergonomics, price, etc. Not to mention because of their overly-ambitious goals, they end up delaying and/or cutting back products which more often than not, underperform. I give them props for trying and innovating, but they've caught more L's than W's.

why is the pimax crystal super a downgrade? Isnt it just the pcvr version of the crystal?
@acacia275 ай бұрын
if only the pimax software wasn't god awful to use, releasing so many headsets and not fixing glaring bugs and rushing pimax crystal's release. they would be more mainstream if their software wasnt complete jank to use, my pimax 8kx is unusable because their software wont communicate with my lighthouses at all, stereo overlap is pretty terrible too with the high fov headsets, it feels like you have to be cross eyed to use it. good video, would be nice if you talked about software since its one of the reasons people stay away from these headsets. even if you do get it working, the bulkiness of the headset is horrible to use for long sessions, definitely save your money and get a beyond instead. its nice to use once or twice but the novelty wears off when you actually want to play vr.
