Well, yeah. His health was deteriorating, and quickly at that, and by the time he was sworn in for his fourth term, I'm not sure he even believed he would live through his full four years at that point. I think, had Franklin Roosevelt lived through to the end of the Second World War, he probably wouldn't have stuck around for much longer after that. I personally think, as bad a shape as he was in at the time of his death, had he lived through to the end, he probably would have resigned from office shortly after the war ended and peace was stable. That's just my thoughts on the matter though, I'm sure other people could look at the same information and come to a different conclusion.

I think FDR's way stems from the first form of administering and taking the oath of office. Originally, it was custom for the Chief Justice to say the full oath first, and then the incoming president affirms it with an "I do/I will. [So help me God.]" From what I read, this form was used from the very first inauguration, that of George Washington, until either Calvin Coolidge or Herbert Hoover, who preceded FDR. I'm not sure if Hoover's inauguration was like that. Maybe FDR was showing off his memory skills? I dunno. Either way, the current form of administering/taking the oath, with the Chief Justice speaks the oath in phrases, and the president repeating after, starts with Truman, as the video shows.

With FDR on the 4th time, keep in mind he had been President almost 12 years at this point. He was President through much of the Great Depression, and had to lead through it, and was now leading through a two front World War which has been going for 3 years. Now he will have to keep doing this another 4 years. Think of that stress, on top of everything else.
@hotwax9376

And his health was already declining at that point. Everybody knew it and some of his critics even used it against him, saying that he would probably die before finishing another term. He didn't even want to run for a fourth term, but he did it because he didn't think the country should switch horses in midstream. It's quite likely that stress contributed to the cerebral hemorrhage that killed him three months into his fourth term.

Sad to see FDR by 1945 looking so drawn and his voice without that booming quality. That was less than three months before he passed away. With Dwight D Eisenhower in both 1953 and 1957 it is interesting that when the chief justice says “... faithfully execute the office of President of the United States,“ Eisenhower’s response is “ faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States.“ I thought maybe he had misspoke in 1953, But he did it again in 1957. For historical purposes, I am glad a recording of Lyndon Johnson taking the oath of office in Dallas aboard Air Force One on November 22, 1963 after the assassination of President Kennedy is in existence and I am glad you posted it. Finally, thank you for updating this so quickly with President Biden’s swearing in.

I first watched Biden's inauguration live and just was surprised by the fact that they did it 16 minutes early (iirc it was 11:44 AM EST) and that's all I really remembered. Then I watched this not long after and noticed he said everything fairly fluently. This time, I noticed that when he turned to his left, there were only three people; his wife, Hunter, and Ashley (I think). Beau died in 2015, and Naomi died with Joe's first wife in 1972. He's outlived two of his own children and a wife, and I can't help but feel sorrow for the fact that two more people should've been there with Joe, but they weren't.

Biden has done so many things than people realize. I think he’s doing great so far as president. Things may be a bit messy around specifically the border crisis and the pandemic but he’s handling being the president well. I do think that he could tackle the border crisis a little bit better but then again we have a bunch of issues right now that he’s trying to handle in the best way possible. He’s definitely not perfect but he’s doing just fine.
