I've heard it said that while Grant was suffering from the cancer, he described the sensation he felt while drinking a cup of water as "pouring a vial of molten lava down my throat" or something along those lines. One of the reasons I adore Grant so much is that this is the time when he was writing his memoirs because he wanted to do anything he could to help provide for his wife after he was gone. The guy was suffering unbelievable agony, knew he was going to die soon, yet he spent 12+ hours a day writing, with no guarantee that it would actually amount to anything, just because he wanted to do anything he could to see to it that his wife had some support after he died. He would sadly die only 3 days after he finished writing and to say that his efforts paid off would be a huge understatement. Grant's memoirs is one the most successful books in American history. Grant is my personal favorite president in American history. He was a hell of a man and his is a legacy that all men should strive to live up to.
@almac6644 ай бұрын
Do you know that Grant as commander of the Union force instructed them to burn every farm they came across. Kill, maim (some would r a p e the women) as they marched south after the surrender of General Lee. Regardless of who's side you are on, or what values you believe to be righteous; those acts were heinous and down right demonic. Yes our country survived after the Civil War; but Grant was no saint. Neither side acted noble to be fair, both sides treated POWs with disdain; but Grant did much worse in my opinion, because surrender had done been established; and innocents were brutally attacked.

He was also doing his writing with no painkillers, as the only available one was opium that made him too sleepy and clouded his mind. Polk's last words brought tears to my eyes. He passed peacefully, while being able to spend his final moments alone with his wife of 25 years, whom he professed his eternal love to before going. Nothing else was more important to him in his final moments besides his wife. No doubt the love they had was real, as she stayed a widow for 42 years after until her death. Makes sense why it was the last thing he wanted to say and for her to know before she could never hear him say it again. An incredibly sweet and lovely way to pass.

@@Maya-bu2rf I totally, totally agree with you, and did not know of the mistress and telephone calls. Oswald had to go, and it was obvious that the shooting of him was staged at the police station. Ruby just happens to have a gun on him, just happens to meet face-to-face with Oswald, on the right day, the right hour of the day, the right area. Old Slinky in his limo said it all when he slumped down in the back seat when turning into the plazza, leaving his wife open to a stray bullet. The U.S administration and U.K have a great deal of blood upon their hands, and are not above having people murdered, as with Kennedy, and I strongly suspect Lincoln, that Lincoln had to go, and a way was made for him in the Ford theatre
@Maya-bu2rf3 жыл бұрын
@@gailbirchall2163 I watched a history detectives show where they went into the National Archives and found letters written by Lincoln to get an Army Quartermaster off court martial charges twice. He did it as a political favor and even says he hopes to get votes from Mississippi because of this. He was afraid he would not be re-elected. The Quartermaster was getting Union soldiers onto paddle boats to ship them up the Mississippi River to get them home after the war. This was ten days after the death of Lincoln. The boat was built for about 300 passengers. In his greed he put 2000+ soldiers and some civilians onto a boat called the Sultana. It sank due to overcrowding and about 1800 people died. No one was blamed and charged. The detectives said there was more than enough evidence to impeach Lincoln so they thought he would prefer to be dead! I saw it on Amazon prime tv. I have a friend who was related to Dr. Mudd who helped John Wilkes Booth by setting his leg. What I do not understand is if he had a broken leg how did he get away from the theater? I was always a history fan, but I never heard of the sinking of the Sultana until the show.

That is so chilling from Grant saying "water" just before his death. That would be such a painful way to die basically slowly being suffocated by a cancerous growth in the throat.
@Zitsanrael11177 ай бұрын
Absolutely true, and I've heard it said that while Grant was suffering from the cancer, he described the sensation he felt while drinking a cup of water as "pouring a vial of molten lava down my throat" or something along those lines.

@Zitsanrael1117 Glad to see another person who feels the same way about Grant, he's the greatest American hero in my books. If you haven't yet, definitely visit the Grant mausoleum in NYC. It is a beautiful building and really moving to be there by him and Julia, but is unfortunately in a state of disrepair and needs the visitors to get the funding to stay in good shape!

I would believe so. By the end of their life, those with Alzheimer's tend to lose the ability to speak. I know since a relative of mine who died of Alzheimers, she was majority of the time asleep during her final days with her not speaking and being bed ridden. They lose the ability to speak since they lose the ability to understand how speech is formed and understanding speech.
