Having multiple characters that occupy the same niche/role is really important. Imagine if you had to draft pick your characters in a 3v3 fighting game and someone could block you from picking your main.

If you want to do an extended cut, I'd recommend checking at the list of characters they ported over to the card game. League design gameplay wise puts characters in boxes A LOT since they have clear roles to fill. But the card game fleshes them out a lot more on thematic level. There was an article back then about "Runeterran truths" from the Project L devs, saying how you don't want to translate the gameplay, you instead want to pin down the gameplay fantasy of a character and start from there. Jax, the guy that fights with a lamp post, in the card game is depicted has having encountered and inspired people around the world to fight with whatever goofy ass weapon they have available. So there's a whole cycle of cards you pair in his deck where they randomly acquire equipments with different effects. The list of those weapons include : - An electric powered wrench - A cooking pot filled with spicy soup - An amulet that summons a spectral wolf - A fishing rod (with and without a fish attached to the tip) - A back scratcher - A shepherd's staff - A cast iron pan It's a great example of the design work the project L team also has to take when trying to translate these characters.

Listening to an outsider's perspective about the characters and how its "Same person with different flavor" is totally valid and I can see where Majin Obama is coming from. League only gets new players through old heads, and I think if it weren't for that people would never pick it up. One thing I think was not mentioned was the reason there is like multiple of "the same character" is the like equivalent of like, "I don't play Ryu, I play Ken." I understand a fighting game has to be more versatile, and unique with its cast, but aside from the fact that one wants to play Rek'Sai over Cho'Gath, it's because one has the Jungler role, the other has a top laner role. One is a tank, one is a bruiser. But I understand the need for roster balance.

I'd say it's even worse. Camille is like a 7ft tall cyborg/robocop aristocrat with sword legs and Attack on Titan grappling hooks who puts you in magic-science prison - a pretty arguably unique and detailed character design regardless of what genre of games you're looking at - whereas Irelia nad her whole psychic Byakuya blades feels somewhat more like a generic anime fighter type character. Diana is pretty bland though I give him that.

That being said, your analogy of starting with a template and then specializing in different talent tree set ups is basically how league archetypes work - assassins, juggernauts, ADCs, enchanters, mages, junglers- champs fit one of those archetypes but are differentiated in what aspect of that archetype they excel at.

Kayle would be Phoenix. The longer the game takes the more she comes online. She reaches her final form at level 16 (max meter) And she has an ultimate that prevents death so it’s kind of similar in that regard. Also, Solar Eclipse Kayle is the best looking Kayle which would also fit. Lol

@@doogies For the splash arts, you're 100% right. In game, they play and look pretty differently (Diana and Irelia have a similar mechanic for the dashes, but they use it for different purposes). I fully agree that Riot struggles with "Same Face Syndrome" in splash arts a lot

Some things I think you are missing is looking into the actual lore of the character not just their LOL kit of abilities. Like a character heimer is known for a turret gun in LOL but the card game is actually building up robots to help him fight. So for me I think heimer not even having a turret gun but instead other inventions that act like traps a character like Old Testament from guilty gear or cagliostro from Granblue would use to control spots on the map.
