Justin Leonard became the fifth consecutive American to win the Open at Royal Troon in 1997 at The 126th Open Championship.
Leonard made a strong start in the opening rounds, scoring 69 and 66 respectively to make the cut sitting in second place, two shots behind Darren Clarke. While Leonard made it to the weekend, five past Open champions missed the cut; Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Nick Price, Sandy Lyle and Ian Baker-Finch.
Day three saw Leonard lose ground in his pursuit of the Claret Jug, having been overtaken in the leaderboard by Jesper Parnevik after shooting a round of 72.
At the start of the championship round Leonard was tied third with Fred Couples and trailed Parnevik and Clarke.
The American played his best round of the tournament, only dropping two shots in a round where made eight Birdie’s to score 65. This dominant display was more than enough to overcome the challenges of Clarke and Parnevik, who tied for second.
Justin Leonard’s -12 for the championship secured him his first and only major victory and every shot of his winning final round is here for you to enjoy.
