I definitely agree. The like/dislike ratio for Corrin's trailer is FAR larger than the one for Robin and Lucina's own trailer, which I think tells something about how the former's inclusion was (and still is) MUCH more divisive compared to the latter two. Plus, it was Corrin that truly started the whole "too many Fire Emblem characters" thing (Roy's return as DLC only planted the seeds).

I thought Wii Fit trainer was hype. I loved seeing representation for one of Nintendo's more casual franchises. Wii Fit was a really important game for a lot of people's physical and mental health during the Wii era, and I imagine many who regularly played those games formed a connection to Wii Fit Trainer, they are a very supportive and nice character.

Fun list, though mine would be waaaay different. A few things: 8:19 you claim we saw Byleth before the announcement of FP2, but Byleth was announced on Jan 16th, 2020 druing a "mysterious" Sakurai Presents video, and FP2 was announced during a Nintendo Direct just after Terry's announcement on Sep 4th, 2019. 26:39 as another commenter has noted, Peach was also playable in SMB 2 (USA). It's obvious that you've put a lot of work into this and I can't wait to see part 2! (Hopefully with Snake being up in the top 5 at least!)

The thing is, Fighters Pass 2 WAS announced during Byleth’s reveal. In the direct they said “more DLC fighters are coming.” I completely forgot about this. I looked up when fighters pass 2 was announced, saw that it was the same day as Byleth, and went with that. I was mistaken, of course, but this doesn’t changed where I’d place Byleth. The fact is still that he was originally going to be the last DLC fighter, so our expectations were through the roof. With Peach, yes I’m dumb and forgot about SMB2, and this isn’t the first time I’ve made that mistake. Again, this wouldn’t have changed where I put her, though I would have worded it differently.

Personally, the hypest I've been in a smash Character was Mr. Game and Watch It was on 2009, I was 9 years old playing Melee with my brother, we both only played Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Kirby games before Melee, so we weren't really interested in most of the roster When the final sillouete appeared, we were thrilled to see who possessed such basic shapes It was the sillouete itself, and we were immediately disappointed for a whole two seconds, until he started moving What is this thing? Why is it moving so sparadically? Why is his stage a game console?! Thanks to Mr. Game & Watch, we both started investigating on all types of games, consoles and generes, and the Game & Watch line up will always be my favorite for that reason

I was so hyped when Wii Fit Trainer was announced, I thought it was hilarious. I don't think I was saying to myself that I wanted to play as her, but the sheer absurdity of her inclusion was mind blowingly funny to me. While waiting for Sm4sh I remember her inclusion having the biggest effect on me. edit: tbh, I disagree with a lot of the list. Villager and Ice Climbers were hype for similar reasons, being that they were very unique. Unlocking Ice Climbers in Melee as a kid was one of the more hype reveals because of how strange they were, and honestly a lot of kids were drawn to their gameplay, while Villager honestly was unexpected and his moveset was different than any fighter in any fighting game. On the other side, Incineroar was such a fucking let down, he should be lower. It was so blatantly obvious that the last fighter was going to be a Pokemon, and while people were kind of expecting Incineroar there were clearly other Pokemon that people wanted much more, and we saw from his initial gameplay that he was slow as fuck. Everyone knew he was gonna be bottom tier instantly, and we were right. It was also revealed that he was the last new character to come to the game on release and it was such a let down, especially considering how few truly new characters there were in Ultimate.

Before that, there was Mark, the renamable FE7 tactician who had no lines and couldn't be used in combat.

There are a lot of different perspectives to draw conclusions from for this. What I mean is, take a look at the Simon/Richter reveal for example. Even people who have never played a Castlevania game before know who Simon Belmont is, while Richter...yeah not so much. But because Simon's inclusion as "The Castlevania Rep" seemed so obvious the hype was merely based on "he's the obvious Castlevania rep". While for actual Castlevania fans, they lost their collective s*** when Richter appeared in the trailer. From what I could gather the responses for the 2 Belmonts went kinda like this: For Simon, General Smash fans: "That makes sense, that's pretty cool." Castlevania fans: "Finally, it's about time." For Richter, General Smash fans: "Who?" Castlevania fans: "HOLY S*** NO WAY!!!"

A major part of the Fire Emblem Fatigue is because all of the Fire Emblem characters look so similar to each other for the most part, and fall into the same fighting category: Swordspeople. Ike, Roy, Marth, Lucina, and Chrom are basically all echo fighters of each other, and the most real variety you'll find is the other three having some sort of projectile to use and one of them having a larger arsenal, but all of them still use melee weaponry as their main form of dealing damage. You can't say that about the Mario franchise or Pokemon franchise characters; those series have way more fighter playstyle variety. The closest you really get is Mario, Luigi, and Dr. Mario playing similarly as up-in-your-face brawlers with a few bouncing projectiles, and Pichu and Pikachu being similar in playstyle, having a hit-quick-and-make-them-chase-you method of play, but the others in their franchises genuinely play wildly different. Categorizations in the Mario series: Mario: All-around brawler. Dr. Mario: All-around brawler. Luigi: All-around brawler with a self-launching attack and a tethergrab. Wario: grabs 4 days. Bowser: Slow, but hits hard everywhere in front of, above, and directly below him. Donkey Kong: Slow, but hits hard everywhere below, behind, and directly in front of him. Diddy Kong: Zoner, combos, grabs, and area denial with a jetpack! Peach: Combos and styling on your opponent. Daisy: Combos and styling on your opponent. Yoshi: tethergrab and aerial combos. Bowser Jr: gadgetry that attacks at a distance. Rosalina and Luma: Two-in-one character that's good in the air. Categorizations in the Pokemon series: Jigglypuff: gimmick of a powerful move that needs setup. Pokemon Trainer: technically three different characters in one. Details on the three are as follows: Squirtle: lightweight brawler. Ivysaur: ranged grappler. Charizard: aerial tank. Pikachu: Speedy hit-and-run character with a fair amount of reach. Pichu: Pikachu, but hits harder, and attacks damage you as well. Mewtwo: making your opponent fight themselves and their controller. Incineroar: as you said, wrestler, meaning up close and personal. Greninja: Zoner. Lucario: Mix between brawler and zoner with a gimmick of doing more damage as they take more damage. Fire Emblem, for contrast: Ike: Generic Swordsperson with the critzone on the outer edge. Roy: Generic Swordsperson with splash damage. Marth: Generic Swordsperson. Lucina: Generic Swordsperson. Chrom: Generic Swordsperson. Robyn: Swordsperson with multiple projectiles. Corrin: Swordsperson with a projectile and a disjointed grab. Byleth: melee weapon attacker with a projectile and a varying attack range depending on how you approach them. As you can see, not much variety in the Fire Emblem roster.

Corrin should've placed lower IMO. His inclusion is why the "too many Fire Emblem characters" complaint skyrocketed in the first place, as well as the "anime swordfighter" complaint. Corrin caused a lot of negativity with his inclusion, which was mostly just to promote a new game. A new game that was sorta controversial in Japan already. And similarly, I think Min Min should've placed higher. Due to the way Nintendo announced the next fighter after Byleth, speculation narrowed down significantly, meaning that people didn't go wild with their imagination and get disappointed when it was a first-party rep. This, along with the fact that Min Min was actually one of the most popular fighters in ARMS, got a lot of people excited when she was properly announced... certainly a LOT MORE than Corrin.

Personally I believe Pichu is a great character in Melee, I was super excited to see Pichu in Melee and it was really the only character I ever played as after unlocking it. I don’t think Pichu is a joke character in the slightest, and is in no way true. I think Pichu being worse than Pikachu is subjective, not an unarguable fact. Pichu has many benefits Pikachu doesn’t have, like a wall jump, smaller size and an even more powerful side special move. Pichu is a serious threat in the right hands, and although the self-damage and being the lightest character in the game don’t mix very well (if at all), it’s more than made up for by Pichu’s speed and strength-its up smash attack alone is one of the most powerful in Melee, and Pichu’s other moves are very useful too. I think Pichu is criminally underrated, and I believe it can even be better than Pikachu if mastered.

I can't stand the Yoshi and Luigi slander, Yoshi deserves at least more hype than Jigglypuff for Smash 64.... When I found out Luigi was unlockable in Smash 64 I was SUPER hyped. I never got bored of the guy, he's still one of my mains. I think you probably ranked Dark Samus a bit low as well even if they're just an echo.

You Seem to Forget the Heroes from DQ 3,4,8 and 11. The Amount of Hype it created in Japan was the same(If not superior) as the hype over Banjo-Kazoie in America. Also, in term of popularity, DQ is equal to FF, if not superior. (In Japan, At least). Plus, it help that the artist for the artstyle of the DQ Games is the same that does the artstyle for Dragonball, the most popular and hyped anime of all time.

As a huge Fire Emblem fan, I gave lots of hype on the two characters that were DLC Corrin and Byleth. I always go with the male versions of Robin, Corrin, and Byleth like I do in their games. Fire Emblem is one of the best Nintendo franchises I played.

Technically Dark Samus and Dark Pit are separate characters in both of their respective games, not really alternate forms. I definitely agree that neither of them were interesting additions, but at least they didn't have many new animations to take up resources.

Granted 2013 was the year before I got into Smash, but didn't Wii Fit Trainer get a lot of fan art? I like Miis not just because they're customizable, but because I liked using them in games like Wii Sports as a kid. I know announcing an ARMS fighter joining made the hype simmer down and it's not that popular of a game, but I personally got very excited for Min Min as I mained her in ARMS since Day 1. No newcomer on my fighter wishlist joined Smash yet, so it felt even more special for me.

My profile picture probably says it all, but I was really hyped about Byleth being in smash because I loved Three Houses. If you were to ask me I'd say Byleth should be higher than Corrin. I believe Corrin was the first Fire Emblem character where people found the amount of characters from that franchise to be tedious, with Chrom and Bylerh shortly following. Also corrin was revealed before they were even in a game.

I’d argue Mac need not be any near this portion of the list, mostly due to his legacy of being the first ever character to make the jump from assist trophy to fighter, which is incredibly hype. He even still had some fresher fans at the time coming from his outing on the Wii, on top of his massive following spawned from his largely successful arcade and NES games.

I kind of expected Pyra/Mythra to be in the middle because of the wide range of reactions they got. There was me (and many Xenotubers) screaming my head off in my living room, and then there was Dunkey, who hated Xenoblade 2 and called it the worst direct ever.

I was way more hype for Dark Samus than a lot of the characters after her on the list, but it quickly dissipated when I realized she's just an echo fighter. I hope she gets de-cloned in the future, because Dark Samus could be so much more. I mean, come on, I'm supposed to believe Dark Pit, Miis, ROB, Duck Hunt, etc. are more hype than the main antagonist of the Prime trilogy?

Okay, I can get Corrin being above Byleth, but how is he above Robin?You even said initially and Robin when he was revealed was just as hyped as Lucina (people complained when the first roster leak turned out fake and Robin broke) because he changed the standard on who can join Smash. Smashboards wanted Robin way more than Chrom and everyone lambasted Corrin when (s)he was first revealed to the point people in the West nearly boycotted Fates. Opinion or not, I have to disagree and say Corrin is by far the least hype Fire Emblem character, even lower than Robin even by FE fans today.

@@mythos6308 I'm going by his rules of "initial hype" alone based on the community and not just the OP. Byleth was more disliked initially than Corrin because of his placement in the Fighter Pass and being a Fire Emblem character in a game that includes all of them, but overall, I know Corrin is the worst FE character by a mile. I agree Byleth is a far better character both with Smash after their release and to the FE community as a whole, but how he could put Corrin above both Robin, who has had exceptionally garnered more hype for being the first non-protagonist to get into the default main roster of a Smash game and breaking the tradition of who can get into Smash, as evidenced by Min-Min and Pyra/Mythra as well as there are far more negative Corrin responses and that the negative Robin responses also had the same opinion on Lucina's inclusion, but many were glad he that it wasn't Chrom. There is even factual evidence that Robin was initially more well-received and Robin is the middle most like Smash FE character.
