Toei has a habit of doing this Vegeta's main three signature attacks (galick gun, big bang attack, final flash) were all used once each in the Z manga, but he spams them in super also dont like how in the filler bits, SBC is more often than not just a generic beam, why was gohan tryna block that, its supposed to pierce through flesh like butter. This was the first significant special move in Dragon Ball Z after everyone having kept a consistent loadout from the Demon King Piccolo arc, last really memorable one being the Mafuba. Both are about spiraling Ki to some extent. You gotta wonder if Piccolo.jr learning the Mafuba and it's counter technique inspired this move.

I think it's a bit more of a counter to the kamehameha. Both are charge moves with huge destructive potential however where as the Kamehameha is like a giant bomb shot at you, the SBC is a precise drill attack that can't rlly be blocked. All of the energy concentrated into a single point vs a lot of energy shot at you that's been taken well plenty if times b4 but the canon, while used less and is hard to use, had actually broken the barrier that Vados or whis (can't remember which angel) said was indestructible.

Back before every ki attack was just a knockoff of the Kamehameha. The Special Beam Cannon was intended to be a piercing attack with an explosive payload after the focus on condensing the energy was finally released, making it way more impressive of a technique than just a super-duper energy wave. It, the Destructo Disk, and the Spirit Ball are totally slept on as useful ki techniques after the first part of Z, and I find the lethality of the Special Beam Cannon and the Destructo Disc to both be deserving of more credit. The Tri Beam gets its moments at several other points, but apart from the explosive power and the shape it carves out when used, there's not much about it that sets it apart from other big ki blast attacks. Wish that ki control and delivery was more creative in the series post-Saiyan Saga.

It's cuz piccolo can decide whether he wants to take long for more power or fire quick just because. But when he fired it quickly it's not as effective or powerful, but more likely to hit. Which is why he sometimes fires it off so quickly. When he takes long to charge it becomes more powerful but also way more telepathed and obvious to the opponent who won't just sit there and let you hit them. But Piccolo has done clever things through the series to mitigate the downside. First here by having Goku hold down Raditz, against frost he used his free arm to stretch and tie up Frost, and also in that same battle piccolo demonstrated he could stop charging but Hold onto it rather than lose it. He used that to fake out frost. Typically he would lose his charge If disrupted and have to start from scratch, but he figured out a way through his Ki control to store the power incase he ever got hit while charging. Really a damn shame they didn't let him Hit frost In that match
