You breezed over Oklahoma, but the scissor-tailed flycatcher is an S tier bird. When in flight they have the beautiful feathers that trail behind them that do look like scissors. Also, the bird is on our official state license plate.

I just got the Wingspan board game, so now I see a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher much more often. It is a very nice bird. I like the way they did it on the license plate too. Good job Oklahoma! Also good that they chose a unique bird. Thanks for watching, Jawn!

This was really interesting Steve, I had no idea there was quite so much overlap between the state birds of many states! I think we should mandate states to each choose a unique species, but somehow I don’t think that will happen! - Harrison and Evan
@BioBush4 жыл бұрын
Hi Harrison and Evan! I agree that it should be mutually exclusive. There are SO many good birds to choose from, even from popular, colorful, culturally symbolic birds. There are a lot of birds out there. Making that rule now would reignite many state rivalries. In that band of cardinals there is already a debate about which one was first, because it was unofficial in some states while other states. We would have to create a new category of "State Birds for the 21st Century" and make it mutually exclusive to have any chance at a peaceful bird selection. Might be fun! Thanks for watching again this week!

Great video Steve. My grandson, Oliver , saw a red Cardinal, which led to a discussion of the States birds. We live in Miami and I recently hear a Public Radio report that Florida is considering changing it’s state bird from the Mockingbird. Have any states changed its state bird? Thanks for your efforts. Alan Weisberg and Oliver Mark.
@BioBush3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan and Oliver! No state has ever changed its state bird. Florida would be the first. I like the idea of each state having a unique bird that represents their values and the species native to their range. Birds are such excellent symbols, and there are plenty to choose from. Happy New Year Steve! We still have a lot of gulls in Utah, I think the great salt lake has one of the larger populations of the california gull, though we also get a lot of ring-bills, which I was trying to figure out if the picture was truly the california gull because they are basically identical except in what shade of grey the wings are and a red bit on the California's beak
@BioBush4 жыл бұрын
Happy New Year to you as well. That gull story was pretty interesting to read about, especially the monument of gulls eating crickets. I should have commented on the distribution of bird orders, because basically everything is Passeriformes, with a smattering of other orders: Galliformes, a Piciformes, a Cuculiformes, and a couple others. We have upgraded our brains to do this. Here's the original gull photo (flickr.com/photos/62798180@N03/8475304996) and by zooming in it has a slight red patch. This is why we need people out there doing digital birding!

I studied Marine Biology at the university level and work with animals professionally as a zookeeper. I have never heard of a bird with five toes or a chameleon-like tail. I don't doubt what you saw, but I have no insight into what it might be. Is there a chance you could get a picture? Maybe you discovered a new type of bird and can get it named after yourself. :) Thanks for watching again this week, Immanuel!

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY OF THE SAME BIRDS FOR SO MANY STATES?
@BioBush2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rav! That's a good question. There are 18 states that chose the same three birds, and there are lots of other duplicates as well. I think it would be nice for each state to choose a state bird which is unique to their culture. Florida is working on that - considering the Scrub Jay instead of being on Team Mockingbird.
