Love your videos as always! Small correction at 1:19, birds don’t have XX/XY sex chromosomes. They use ZZ/ZW, and females are actually the ones with the heteromorphic pair (ZW) instead of males.
@bird2034 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact, this trait is what allows individual cuckoos of the same species to have very different-looking eggs. While cuckoos parasitize many other species of bird, female cuckoos will *always* lay their eggs in the same type of nest they were raised in. Because the trait for egg coloration is on the W chromosome, which is always given to them from their mom, it allows each “line” of mother-daughter cuckoos to have different colored eggs without mixing with the other cuckoos in their species. This is what has led to their egg mimicry being so effective on such a variety of other species. (If you’re interested in reading more about this topic, search “common cuckoo egg morphs”)

Wait... don't birds have WZ sex chromosomes, not XY? As in, a male bird has ZZ and a female bird has WZ? They're thought to develop when a female ovum (egg cell) doesn't split properly, so instead of just containing a W chromosome, it also contains a Z, each one in a separate nucleus. So it's like having two ova cells in one. When it's fertilised, by the male Z-containing gametes, it results in one-half of the bird having the male pairings (ZZ) and the other containing the female pairing (WZ).

And it's the same vibe. It's calm, doesn't make you seem like an idiot and tells you the correct terms for what happens or how the tools work and stuff. And now I have found the english equivalent for that, but with animals. I love it. The whole arrangement is calm and nice and you just enjoy learning.

That singular paragraph in that book must be the Holy Grail of bird tidbits haha. Edit: I actually tagged that generic "Eagle" sound as a Red-Tailed Hawk when I was young. I'd always wondered why they'd use the same sound for eagles and whatnot in movies and cartoons. I lived in the PNW most of my life, so I knew what a Bald Eagle sounds like. I searched out different bird noises at the library (I spent most of my after-school days at the library, as I enjoyed reading). I love that the "truth" is coming out haha. It's interesting what mainstream media can change or twist factually.

I got obsessed with red tailed hawks because of Animorphs, so I've known a lot about them since I was a kid (I'm 40 now, so yeah). So when I heard that telltale screech outside my window last year, I was super hyped. I looked out the window and there was a red trailer Hawk on the balcony across the driveway from my building. I was so sad that I didn't think to get photos that I made sure to be ready... This year when I heard it again, I was able to get a bunch of photos including one where the hawk was looking right toward my camera. It's still one of my favorite photos ❤🤎

Absolutely mesmerizing! The way swifts perform their aerial ballet, merging and moving like a fluid mass, is nothing short of nature's magic. 🦅 The intricate choreography of these murmurations, coupled with their precise destination planning, is a testament to the wonder of the natural world. And those quirky collective nouns for birds-what a delightful reminder of language's charm! Who wouldn't be enchanted by a "charm" of finches or a "flamboyance" of flamingos? It's amazing how these names encapsulate the character and vibrancy of each species. Such a captivating video that beautifully highlights both the extraordinary behavior of birds and the playful creativity of the language we use to describe them. Can't wait to discover what's causing those bumpy leaves next! 🌳✨

Genuinely, even after understanding how unidirectional breathing works, I don’t get how birds breathe the their bones… where does the air go? Is it just extra space? Do the holes lead somewhere? I need a visual explanation of the flow of air through a bird to get it. I know that they breathe in, filling air sacs, then then air sacs fill their lungs making it so that they have a constant supply of fresh air, unlike humans who breathe in and out and only get fresh air 50% of the time. But where do the hollow bones enter this equation? Do the bones lead to the air sacs? I can’t find a single decent diagram, or video online that shows how it works… I’d be very grateful if someone could help me understand it or direct me to a video that shows how it works.

The murder of crows and unkindness of Ravens just make me think Humans have completely misunderstood these brilliant birds. While we do admit their intelligence, they are often seen as somr bad animals...I think the reason is them being suspicious of us and often trying to get us out if they suspect we are onto them. But i have seen they are one of the kindest to their own kind and even to humans if they gain trust. I have seen crows feeding another adult crow just because it had one defective leg..despite it being completely ablebodied to fly and do other things... But they think of it being a slight disability and hence the extra help...a sign of empathy even humans dont often show.
