Cincinnati has a forgotten hot dog that used to be served at Reds games. The Big Red Smokie, was a skinless smoked sausage made by local meat processor Khans. They were beautiful, a perfect snap with a hickory smoke flavor which is great with this spicy mustard they have there.

LA street hot dogs have a special place in my heart, every single concert or event I've been to in LA, you bet a street vendor will be waiting outside grilling some tasty dogs, the caramelized onions are the best part!
@Park_Place
@Park_Place 8 ай бұрын
There are two rules of thumb when it comes to street dogs: 1. The less official the stand is, the better the food is. If that sweet old Mexican lady is cooking out of a laundry cart and keeps her ketchup and mustard in rinsed-out Suavitel containers, the dogs are gonna be fire. They'll also be super generous with the portions and give you a sausage wrapped in 4 bacon strips topped with a pound of onion for like $6. 2. The more indistuingishable each ingredient is, the tastier the hot dog will be. You don't want your street dog to look like the photo at Costco food courts. All the ingredients need to mix and make the dog look like garbage in order to maximize the flavor per bite.

As a North Carolinian, our dogs are staples here. But nothing can compete to a coney, (or the skyline dog, but I’ve always still heard them referred to as coneys by my mom who was raised there) all the way with Skyline Chili and Tabasco on top during a cold day. I was 8 when I had my first ever coney in Cincinnati. It was cold as hell outside, and I put Tabasco on top of those chili cheese and onions (I hated onions as a kid but this converted me) and I took a bite of my first ever real deal dog and fell in love. I’m 32 now and have chased that taste ever since. Coneys will always have a place in my heart.

I'm from NC, slaw dogs are good, the sweetness of the slaw balanced out the spiciness of the chili. There's also a place called Paul's Place in Rocky Point that made their own relish and sold it in the grocery store....we used to put that on hot dogs all the time, with tater chips and a Cheerwine. 😋😊

I would like to try ALL of them. But being from the Midwest the Chicago Dog is a favorite of mine as is the Cozy Dog corn dog from Cozy Dog in Springfield IL who also claims to be the original inventor. Also, one of the last places to serve foot long dogs is a little stand known as Carls in Brentwood Mo. I'm 74 and have been stopping by Carls for a footlong or two and a cold, frosty schooner of IBC root beer since I was 13. Closest thing to heaven without having to die first.

This is a great story. We ran a Top Dog cart in DFW for years and brought in different hot dogs and buns from around the country. By far, the Chicago style was the most popular followed by a Texas chili dog. We only did catering jobs and were booked solid from Memorial Day through football season. We traveled to many different spots and a few of our favorites were the Skyline, Maxwell Polish, the Sonoran and the Detroit Coney. If you’re ever in Denver, a trip to Biker Jim’s is a treat as is Pink’s in LA. The ripper in NJ is also a great dog but the Italian served at Jimmy Buff’s was too much for us.

I grew up in South Carolina, and as far back as I can remember my parents would make Carolina Dogs. So these are a must for a real Carolina dog, but I will say that the pink wiener is totally optional. It must have a nice chili with no beans, a coleslaw that can be creamy, but must have some vinegar in it, a nice yellow mustard and some chopped sweet Vidalia onions. I love almost all hotdogs, but the Carolina Dog in my opinion, when made right, is absolutely the best. There is also a Carolina burger that I grew up on as well that has the exact same ingredients, but obviously with a Cheeseburger or regular burger and instead of a hotdog. Wendy's actually sold a Carolina Burger for a limited time, and was pretty good, but the coleslaw needed more vinegar.

As a Seattle native, I love that they actually mentioned the Seattle dog, but sad that they only included the original instead of the most popular version of it. The best modern Seattle dog is a split-grilled sausage (what kind doesn't matter, I prefer Polish, but a kosher dog, brat, even red-hot works just fine), a hoagie roll toasted on the grill (a bagel bun is classic, unfortunately almost no one offers those anymore), caramelized onions, cream cheese, and sriracha sauce. The tangy spicy garlic-y sriracha sauce is the real key to pulling it all together, giving the Seattle dog a distinctive kick you don't find in any other tubemeat variation.

Cincinnati fellow here. The original "Cincinnati Chili" was a small restaurant called Empress Chili where the future owners of Skyline Chili and Camp Washington Chili both worked out of this restaurant at one time or another. Both restaurants do a variation of Empress Chili recipe. One more thing, I used to work at Skyline Chili as a teenager, and chocolate is used in the recipe, it's literally printed on the ingredients recipe sticker thats slapped onto the pre-made chili mix ingredient bag.

This is false. Chocolate has never been used in Skyline chili. I'm allergic to it and enjoy eating there. That myth came about when someone posted a copycat recipe in the Cincinnati Enquirer in the 70s-80s claiming to have cracked the code. They thought they discovered chocolate was giving it it's color, but were mistaken. That didn't stop every mother and grandmother from copying it down and putting it in their recipe box. So, now if you eat homemade Cincinnati chili from grandma's "secret recipe" you're really eating a failed copycat recipe from 40-50 years ago. It's why homemade tastes nothing like Skyline.

Son of the sunny South here! Growing up in the 1970s, my mammy and pappy taught me that a hotdog ought to have mustard, chili and onions! NO ketchup! Today's Southerons - yes, that is a word - tend to embrace ketchup on their hotdog. Of all the things in our complicated and divisive history, I wish the South had remained firmly in the no ketchup column. Best wishes and a big thank you to our Northern neighbors in New York and Chicago who embrace other, more exotic ingredients, but still remain firmly committed to no ketchup!

As somebody who lives in Michigan, coney island hot dogs are one of the best Michigan-based foods. There is nothing quite as tasty as a steamed hot dog covered in beanless chilli, sprinkled with diced onions and drizzled with, mustard (even though I prefer to NOT have mustard on my hot dogs). Try explaining all of this to an outsider who is visiting Michigan and have them try it., they have not lived until they have tried a coney dog. I would know, I tried that with my old girlfriend and her family who moved to Michigan from Japan, and they loved it. She now lives in Illinois, but we still stay in touch every so often.

You should make a video about the weird cult-like following for White Castle, there's nothing that affects me the way those little steamed burgers with delicious patties, pickle, and onion juice drippings do. I'll never forget the first time I ever ate it I was 16 years old, and I ate a whole 10 sack of original sliders. I didn't even know that I liked onions until that day, it was in a parking lot in northeastern Ohio with my father. I've driven over 75 miles sometimes just to visit one of these restaurants, from Phoenix Arizona all the way to New York City I've had White Castle sliders. For a 100-year-old Burger place, they're really effective at marketing and they introduced the world to the greatest Trifecta of burger flavors which is onion, pickle, cheese. A lot of higher-end smashburgers and burgers of that nature only use onion pickle and cheese, so it's weird that they introduced that holy Trinity but with their own twist on it: the burgers are steamed in the onions, the onions are scooped off of the grill after caramelizing, and haphazardly tossed onto the burger, and the buns are stacked heel to top in order to absorb moisture and soften. The pickles are unceremoniously tucked in between the burger halves as it's assembled. It is the greatest of all American cheeseburgers.

Back in the day, there were so many places here in NJ that served "Texas Weiners". Most all of them were owned and operated by Greek immigrants. The thing that made them special was the sauce put on the hot dog and you could even get chili burgers and chili fries as well. The sauce was made up mostly of spices from the Mediterranean region. I have made it at home many times....it is Cincinnati chili made with simmering ground beef with many spices and yes, unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon and all spice are indeed in there. So even though you were in NJ eating a Texas weiner, you were eating Cincinnati chili . Incidentally in Cincinnati, they serve it over spaghetti but you can have it all the way with shredded cheddar, sliced onions and all.
