I'm still hoping that skincare influencers will make an issue of the size of sunscreen products. We're being gouged. When using the proper amount they can last a little into a month, if not less. At that rate it can become the most expensive skincare product we own. Being that sunscreen is one of products with proven effectiveness to prevent premature aging as well as help to prevent cancer, it's not great that it can cost so much Iit should be 5 oz. (preferably 8 oz.) minimum for face and neck, and at least 16 oz. for the rest of the body. Without raising the prices. I often use a body sunscreen on my face, but as Michelle says, they can lack the elegance of ones made for the face.

@@ririimari @Tarren Mari I just bought the Native Mineral Sunscreen Spf 30, 5 oz. I have medium deep skin (similar to youtuber Ameerah Muhammad) and it doesn't really have a cast on me and dries more matte than greasy. It feels noticeable on the face. They do make one specifically for the face.. The Stlyle and Beauty Doctor has reviews of both. The other one I use is Coppertone Pure & Simple Spf 50, 6 oz. It has a liquid texture rather than cream so feels lighter to me. It has a cast and more of an oily finish. But I like it because the texture makes it easily spreadable. I cover it with powder foundation. I'm glad I found the Native one because the Coppertone was hard to wear on my body without embarrassment because of the cast, and I need makeup to use it on my face.

Not an expert, just try a LOT of sunscreens …. Suggest some trial and error with brands marketed to babies or kids. All the physical sunscreens leave a white cast- obviously- because that’s how they work. Surprisingly, the cheapie Aldi brand ‘Sensitive’ sunscreen is the one I use for longer walks, sport. Their ‘face’ one is in a small tube, cheap enough to buy multiples (waste of packaging)
@ajae...2 жыл бұрын
@@ozwrangler.c I think we were writing our replies at the same time because I suggested a cast free mineral sunscreen. I have tried a lot of sunscreens, and most of them are little. My choices aren't the issue. It's what companies make available to their consumers. The Native Spf I recommended has one version for face and one for body. The face one has an additional plant oil. But it's $16 for less than two ounces. Their body one is $20 for five ounces. Most people are going to see the word face and buy the smaller one, which Native is counting on. I believe this can be done better.

I can confirm the “don’t use expired sunscreen” warning. I did this once as a preteen, not realizing sunscreen expired (it was like a year or more past the expiry date). I am very very pale so burn easily, and I got the WORST sunburn I have ever had in my entire life that weekend. It was basically like I wasn’t wearing any sunscreen. I was in so much pain I had to stay home from school for several days, basically slathered in aloe, trying not to move. Just wearing clothing was painful. Eventually my skin peeled off in giant sheets as the damaged layer died and came off. So yeah, never ever use expired sunscreen! I have always checked expiration dates since that awful weekend.

I’m so happy this video came out at this time in my life. I’m 33 years old and am only now starting to wear sunscreen, buying my first bottle last week. I was one of those kids whose parents didn’t bother with sunscreen. My mother is kind of a miser and didn’t want to spend the money on something, she thought, only kept me from getting a sunburn (and I’m one of those people who burns once in the spring and never burns again all summer). The other parents would be putting sunscreen on their kids and she would just rub my arms and back pretending to put sunscreen on so the others would think she was being a “good parent”. My dad thought it might be a gimmick businesses were pushing, ie. “give us money for this useless product that we will tell you your kid NEEDS”. But that excuse only goes so far, because I’m an oncology nurse. I see how devastating cancer is every day, but it was always something I thought I would look into later or just forget about. BUT I just spent a ridiculous amount of money buying a variety of products to make it easier for myself until I get in the habit. Powder sunscreen in my purse (thank you for mentioning this in the video), a bottle by the door, a bottle in the bathroom, one on my vanity. All different kinds so I can see what works best for me. Thank you again for a great, informative video. Wish me luck!

These videos helped me a lot when I learned that sunscreen is the best anti aging product there is. Literally public service! Thank you for creating these. I'm even *gasp* enjoying wearing sunscreen for the first time in my life! I'm generally following the 1,5 ml [or more] rule for my face, measured in a precision scale (equivalent to a ~thicc~ blob on the tip of my index finger for my face). The only thing I didn't get around yet was reapplying when I wear makeup at the office [aka everyday]. My commute is 10 minutes long, only in the morning, and I don't see the sun the whole day [no light through the windows at the office] so by far I'm skipping reapplication [I think wearing it without reapplying while avoiding the sun like a vampire is better than nothing at least]. When I'm actually exposed to the sun I follow the reaplication rule and don't wear makeup. I also go for at least the 50-70 FPS range just to be safe.

You know how we had criticized companies for releasing sunscreens with alcohol in it? After trying Biore Watery Essence, Nivea Sun Kid, Avene Lait Enfant, I'd rather sunscreens have alcohol for either the sake of texture or mixing the filters together.

It is the first product ever to burn my face off, even after I’d washed it off and tried to cleanse and sooth the skin on my face. But might just be me. Also, I like to use a little bit of MAC Studio Fix over my sunscreen if I don’t want shine or do want sheer coverage. Laying down a base of Milano Make it Last and finishing with a good quality fixing spray seems to meld everything together beautifully. So I don’t quite get the powder’s no good over sunscreen thing. If you can find a way that works I reckon go for it. Just, as Michelle points out, try not to disturb your SPF layer. That’s my contrarian post ☺️ Love your videos Michelle ❤️❤️

when i apply sunscreen, i go with this rule: slather on as much as you reasonably can. take a minute to work it into the skin and the spread it thoroughly. apply some more if you can. it shouldn’t leave a white cast after that and it shouldn’t be so much that it‘s dripping down your skin but max out the capacity of your skin. on very dangerous spots (for me it’s cheeks and shoulder and upper back mostly) apply some more and work it in or (if you can) even leave it a bit thicker on there without much spreading. not like you painted with white paint, but too thick to apply make up on top for example. this is what i do at the beach.

Hi, I have a few other questions about sunscreens. The ㏗ of most sunscreens seems unknown even though we are supposed to apply and reapply sunscreen everyday and that a ㏗ matching the skin is better to maintain a "healthy" and good looking skin. I guess formulating a sunscreen is already difficult enough so brands don't necedsarly focus on the ㏗ to match the skin, especially if some of the active ingredients actually require a ㏗ that does not match the skin to be effective which might be possible right? Have you tried to determine the ㏗ of a sunscreen? If so what did you find? Do you know the ㏗ that some of the most common UV filters require to be effective? Do you know some brands that communicate about the ㏗ of their sunscreens? Obviously it isnt the most important thing but I am curious. Some sunscreens are marketed for wet skin ("can be applied on wet skin"). Is it only a marketing argument (and any sunscreen can be applied to wet skin and be effective) or do you really need a specific formulation for sunscreen to work when applied on wet skin or with wet hands? Thanks in advance.

4:12 I would like a more detailed explanation on this, and i have watched your posts on IG on it, and from other content creators as well. Is that plot of %of UV filtered vs SPF not accurate? I understood the explanation of how SPF50 only let's into the skin half of the UV photons compared to SPF30, and therefore, it is twice more effective. That's an interesting point of view, but 🤔 if the amount that is getting to the skin is already so low... does half of it matter? What matters is the amount of UV the skin is exposed to... that's why sunscreen is only advised for UV Index 3 and beyond. I would really like to see an explanation on this, not based on percentages filtered or allowed in, but on the amount of UV (absolute value) that gets to the skin. Looking forward to future videos! 😊

Say that I like a particular mineral tinted sunscreen I want to keep using because it works as my foundation, but if I put the correct amount is way too cakey. Can I put half of the amount in an chemical sunscreen and then layer the mineral on top? Or do both of them need to be the correct 1tsp? 2. Now say that the tinted sunscreen is not my perfect color match: can I mix two tints (or a tint and a white version) of the same sunscreen? So same ingredients, just different tint. Is that safe?

About the 2 hour sunscreen rule: do most sunscreens wear off in 2 hours in sunlight? Or do they wear off in 2 hours regardless of how much sun you’re getting? If I’m sitting at home all day and never going outside, do I still need to re-apply or is 1 layer enough?

That was so good 👍 !! Most informative video on sunscreen i have seen. Recently i am trying out a new sunscreen from Photozyme (recommended by Penny Smith) with DNA repair. I would be curious what you think of that technology and if you think its worth the extra cost to hv that in a sunscreen.

This was a great video! I consider myself to be a pretty savvy sunscreen wearer, and I use a lot of protective measures like hats, sunglasses, UPF clothing, but I definitely learned a few things! I was especially surprised by the 2-hour application information. I was one of those people that believed that the two-hour reapplication had to do with 2 hours in the sun. I thought that the sunscreen probably broke down or lost effectiveness after 2 hours and that's why reapplication was necessary. It kind of freaks me out that I've been thinking of this all wrong... I have a question about kids and sunscreen: not realizing that the reapplication was supposed to happen every 2 hours regardless, I've been sending my son to school with sunscreen on and assuming it would protect him hours later at recess. He's not a very sweaty kid and doesn't have oily skin so like you said maybe he's getting a little more than 2 hours out of his sunscreen, but now I'm thinking about how best to protect him this summer. Kids have such delicate skin and I know that sunburns in kids can be more harmful later in life than if you get burned as an adult. At least that's what I've heard. My son has never had a sunburn, thankfully, so maybe I'm doing all right with sunscreen in the summer time but I'd love advice on how best to protect kids. They aren't super good at reapplying sunscreen! 😅 I do put him in a lot of hats and sun shirts so at least that's a start.

Ty for the reminders and info! Your videos have made the whole sunscreen ordeal much easier to get through! I've given up on getting sunscreen overseas due to shipping costs and the need to frequently ship from overseas due to low amounts per bottles. I agree that the best sunscreen to use is the one you reach for and not sit on the shelf. Im exploring more sunscreens available locally and am grateful I can find great filters simply through loriel's brands though I do wish Canada had access to other modern filters. Currently using Vichy ideal soleil spf 60. Its mexoryl is low in percentage but applies without whitecast and doesnt clump. I am currently on tretinoin so I know when Im not applying enough (skin starts to peel). I mostly apply the sunscreen once a day and it seems to be good enough. It does sting my eyes if the cream melts down my face but otherwise it works well. I also got Garnier ombrelle complete sunscreen spf 60. This one seems to stay on the surface of my face but it doesnt melt. Both will clump if I dont apply immediately and if I rub too much so I cant dot the product all around my face for even application. Otherwise Im pretty satisfied for now! Both come in 200mL bottles and so are more cost effective as I also dont have to make frequent trips to buy a bottle. I at least can stop thinking and looking for sunscreen products and just use it!!

I'd like to add to the question about products balling up. In most cases, you should look at the first ingredient (water or oil) I've learned that oil based products work well with oil based sunscreen. Then water based sunscreens work best in conjunction with water based makeup/ skincare.

La Roche Posay BB cream is 50+, tinted and excellent. It does have fragrance in it, however, so as cannot use it around my eyes. I switch to the LRP for sensitive eyes for my eye area and my lips and ears. Let it dry down then apply makeup. I usually find the BB cream enough coverage for no makeup makeup look! Mascara on and go.

What I keep running into (and my sister says she does too) is sunscreen getting into my eyes and making my contact lenses hazy I got a new sunscreen recently and I have to keep going to the bathroom to take out my lenses and wash them, then put them back in. It's super inconvenient! The other night I was chopping veggies and almost sliced my finger (got a bit of my fingernail) bc my vision was impaired I guess it's possible that I'm applying more than I need (I have a tendency to do that with other lotions) but when it comes to sunscreen I like to play it safe. Especially since the skin around your eyes is more delicate, I don't want to skimp there Does anyone have advice on this?

Maybe try wearing sunglasses instead when you're going outside? Then just a bit of sunscreen on the sides of the eyes where the sunglasses might not protect, that way it shouldn't run into your eyes

it’s the filters in chemical sunscreens causing this. try a UK / Australian made brand they have newer filters that don’t do that. Or try a physical sunscreen!

Great video (as always). I feel like there are so many face sunscreens to choose from (yay), but affordable, good body sunscreens are more difficult. We are a family of 5, active outside in the summer, so we go through A LOT of sunscreen. However… I am always on the hunt for new options. Would love to know more of your faves ✨

Thanks Michelle! I've watched all your sunscreen videos, and even bought your ebook a while back. Pretty great getting all that summed up in one! My one worry about applying sunscreen atm is that I have to use mineral sunscreen around my eyes, then I usually use chemical for the rest of my face, but since the two inevitably overlap a little I'm concerned they'll deactivate each other in those parts. Looking forward to the sunscreen e-summit! 🧴👑

This is so useful! The thing about reapplying every 2 hours is impossible to me, since I work indoors in cloudy cold UK where the UV index is a 0 most days or 1-2, so I just tend to reapply in the morning and then before driving home and going out for a walk. If it's a sunny day, I may apply during lunch time, so max three times a day for is what I manage on a daily basis. Every 2 hours would be like 5 or 6 times a day, which seems like tons! I can see why that would be need in sunny countries (unlike where I like where the sun rarely comes out from behind clouds)
@Jelena152 жыл бұрын
There is no need to reapplay in that time. Only when you are on the beach or pools or something. Reapplying when you are not that much outside or in case that I mention is really unnecessary. If you want to have long lasting protection use 50+ and that is enough.
@Fernandanatac2 жыл бұрын
Bruh, I live in Brazil I don’t feel like it’s necessary to reapply every 2 hours, that would be hell lol I work in an office too, that just wouldn’t work. I always apply in the morning and I’m trying to train myself to reapply before going out to lunch, but that’s it. 🤷🏼♀️

I hardly wear makeup anymore, and it makes reapplying sunscreen so wonderfully convenient. But on days when I do need some makeup, and I need to reapply, I take everything off, complete double cleanse, then redo my skincare, and sunscreen on top, and makeup. It’s the best result I can think of because I use makeup so rarely.

I find that the perfect combo is chemical sunscreen + tinted sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens have elegant formulation most of the time, so it does not pill under makeup. Tinted sunscreen is a combination of color correcting base makeup and sunscreen. You will get double layers of SPF and you will have an even skin tone.

More sunscreen questions ☀️☀️☀️ can you touch on what the uv-index is and how reliable it is? I heard it's unreliable because of clouds? What is the highest UVAPF? also how can you tell if a company is being honest about the UVAPF? How much does sunscreen protect the eyes from the sun? FYI it's nice to have this video as an overview of more suncreen content :)
@emmao65782 жыл бұрын
My understanding of the UV-index is that it shows the max value for the day, so unless you stand in direct sunlight with the sun at it's peak, you'll probably be experiencing much less UV. Kind of like the max temperature for the day, it's a useful value to have and mostly accurate for what it's measuring but if you're looking to go outside between 7-10am it probably isn't very helpful
@amyamy81772 жыл бұрын
@@emmao6578 thank you :) does that mean that it is still acurate if there are clouds when the sun is at it's strongest?

I’ve heard in a couple places that a few Japanese sunscreens - specifically the Shiseido Anessa and the Biore UV - would not qualify for the broad spectrum designation in the USA, EU or Australia. I was interested in the Biore but now I’m not so sure. Is that true? If it is, would that info deter you from purchasing or am I missing some context?

What?! I thought Japanese sunscreens were superior. I hope we get an answer from Labmuffin.
@tinyartgallery8362 жыл бұрын
@@C03al I hope we get an answer too! regarding what you said - they’re often superior because of the availability of new-generation filters and the resulting cosmetic elegance those filters allow. that doesn’t mean individual manufacturers won’t fall short, but you shouldn’t write off Japanese sunscreens. I’m curious to see what she thinks because critical wavelength/broad spectrum is a valuable tool but it can be a little misleading. it’s meant to indicate to consumers that a product offers good UVA protection, but because of the way it’s measured, you can have two sunscreens with the exact same UVA protection, but different UVB protection, and one will qualify for broad spectrum but the other one won’t.

I have a some sensory issues with sunscreens. As a redhead, sunscreen is a non-negotiable but often I’m tempted to skip it due to the terrible feeling of a film on your skin or the thick feel where it doesn’t really evaporate/sink in. What sensory-friendly lightweight sunscreens do you love?

For the UV index over and under 3 rule, does that still apply outside of Australia? Y’all get a lot more sun than we do here. Is UV index the same everywhere in the world, or do different places calculate it differently? Thank you in advance!

thank you for this video! you mentioned that it should be best to use same actives when applying or re-applying sunscreens. that's also my question since i have heard that avobenzone should not be used with zinc and titanium oxide because they cancel each other out, so there's no protection. Is that true? I am asking because my sunscreen contains avobenzone and i would like to put my tinted mineral sunscreen and/or make up/powder that's titanium/zinc oxide based over it (after it dried of course). would you say that should definitely be avoided? i just want to make sure i keep my full sunscreen protection and it would be important to know since many make zp products contain these actives? thank you!

The downside of higher SPFs is also that many people misunderstand how the SPF should be interpreted and think that they can stay out in the sun for hours at a time, and/or they'll apply multiple products with SPFs mistakenly thinking that the SPFs can be added together, thus giving them a higher SPF. I was actually told that by someone once, ie, if I applied this item which was SPF 20 over another item which was SPF 20, I'd have SPF 40. I was working as a beauty therapist at the time. This information is wrong, of course, but what annoyed me was the company in question to having someone spreading misinformation - he was a makeup artist promoting a new product, therefore not working on counter where main staff could hear what he was saying. There's enough confusion surrounding sun blocks as it is- companies should make sure those that work for them actually know the facts, rather than spreading their own theories. (Sorry, just venting.) Love your posts 👍

At 18:00 you mention that most sunscreens are pretty photostable nowadays --- can you talk more about this, please? I've been avoiding sunscreens with older filters because of photoinstability concerns unless they had been stabilized with helioplex or other technologies. Have formulations changed recently to make these older filters stable without things like helioplex? (Which would be a huge relief to me and my wallet and streaky face 😂)
