That's a thing that he does. Jun'ichi Kanemaru knows how to speak in english, so, while he is voice acting as Sonic, he implements english words, like, "Hey", "Okay", "Let's Go", "What". This adds a bit of depth to the character. But... At the time of Sonic X, he didn't know that "Shit" was a swearword, and he only realised that after the Anime ended.

If you get the Japanese version of Sonic X with subtitles, the characters say "Damn" like, way more than in Shadow The Hedgehog. Like, every single episode has at least 1 "Damn". But it doesn't matter for Japanese, because it's not cursing.

The same with words like "pissed" for example also fell into this as well. I remember back when Regular Show aired, they had to censor that word a couple of times. They even had to censor Rigby from saying "How in the H" into "How in the Heck" in the final version of the first episode because parents thought he meant to say "Hell" (along with "Shit" too).

You missed a few, Sonic says damn in Shadow the Hedgehog’s last story when paralyzed, Knuckles says damn in either Sonic Runners or one of the rivals games, Boom Knuckles says pissed in an unused line in Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, and Zavok says damn in Team Sonic Racing. Because it was censored in-game. The lyrics in the game is "fight the pain away my head is in ruins." Funny enough, though, the Japanese version of Frontiers keeps the uncensored version, probably because chances are kids in Japan don't know English swear words.
