Stars are sources of light and cast shadows, even if the star is gone the light that shines still remains. The Sonic movie has the greatest redemption arc probably in movie history. The movie overwhelmingly met with "This looks terrible!" and the producers actually went back and said "We got the message. We are gonna fix it. Give us another shot." and wtf they actually did. It went from hated, to loved, and Sonic 3 is actually a good movie with actual character development. It's what kid's movies used to be. Good enough to keep your kid glued to the screen, but also good enough to keep an adult entertained (for the most part). What I'm so surprised at is how Disney still hasn't figured this out yet.

Seriously, I stopped getting excited for movies and I thought the problem was that I had grown up. Turns out studios just stopped making movies that were fun to watch. I can appreciate spectacle and good art and warm fuzzy feelings, but Disney literally forgot how to do that and that was their whole brand. I’m literally so glad that Spiderverse and Puss in Boots happened because for a while, they were the only things making movies worth watching again (Pixar is doing okay but their movies aren’t exciting, they’re good the way a meal is good, you’re not really supposed to want more and that’s okay). But sometimes I just want to grab my friends by the shoulders and shake them because the movie is such a good time. Blockbusters that aren’t trying to break your brain or traumatize you. Sonic 2 was fun, Mario was fun, Barbie was fun, Sonic 3 was SO fun. You can fit art and philosophy and a satisfying ending in there and still have fun.

You explained the themes of Sonic Movie 3 so incredibly well. I don't know why people assume that a "kids' movie" should not have proper storylines, and characters that the audience can love or hate as the case may be. All of the fairytales that are popular were intended for kids. The great Pixar movies were intended for kids. Even watching one episode of SpongeBob, or the fairly odd parents demonstrates that they have a plot, humor, and characters we care about. Without that, kids don't enjoy it either. What really sold me on Sonic 3 as well was the fact that Sonic made jokes to and about shadow and each time he hardly reacted to it at all. Nobody mentions that Disney’s always had their films based off of older stories because 90% of the time it’s been common knowledge. Some cases are less obvious than others (like Lion King and Frozen) but then you have Pinocchio which basically tells you front and center that this isn’t an entirely different story. Even then saying Disney has never had original ideas isn’t really true at all because while all or most movies are based off of pre-existing stories not made up by the company, Disney had their own original ideas on how to tell the story, usually by making it more accessible and more stylized than the commonly darker counterpart. What I’m getting at is that there’s not anything inherently uncreative with using premade stories as the foundation for a film (and if so then I guess supposedly beautiful films like Coraline, The Wild Robot, and Corpse Bride are complete frauds of cinema), as the quality and creativity all comes down to execution. The Lion King basically being a retelling of Hamlet in the form of a vibrant, dramatic animated musical with a bunch of African animals as its cast is a symbol of flourishing ideas, where Mufasa (2024) being a retelling of The Lion King, which was a retelling of Hamlet, but in the form of dull, stiff, realistic looking African animals dickin around is a sign of ideas running out. Tolkien also never hated Walt or his movies for not being original stories, he just never liked the sugarcoating in the films, such as how the seven dwarves were portrayed as being jolly and goofy in Disney’s Snow White as opposed to being more stoic and serious like in real German folktales.

Not just is the brother betrayal storyline a lot weaker now but a lot of key things in the Lion King mirrored real life animal kingdom and many fans appreciated it. For instance, in the original film, it made perfect sense for two brothers in the wild to stick together and form a coalition before one betrays the other because that’s what happens in real life a lot of times. Whereas male lions who aren’t brothers are known to kill each other. It was neat to see the film reflect brothers in the wild. The deep and powerful messages about brotherhood and family have also been pissed on. And now Scar isn’t even Simba’s true uncle either now that I think about it! Man, Disney sucks!

The amount of references it had really had me going nuts. I'm not as much of a Sonic fan anymore, but as a kid I was obsessed with him. So seeing those references made me really happy and I was kicking my feet with excitement, despite being an adult. 🤣 And also, when it comes to kids movies- for me, I don't think the plot has to be perfect. It just needs to be good and unique, without relying heavily on cliché. Finding a balance to where a movie is for kids, but still enioyable for adults, proves valuable.

One of the minor things that absolutely sets me off about recent “big cooperation” films, is how lifeless the bad guys look. For example, let’s compare the opponent lions vs Mufasa and Scar, there so obviously hollow and are designed to look like bad guys that have truly nothing to them. Compare that to Shadow and even the OG Scar design from the original Lion King and whilst yeah, it is obvious that there evil, there is so much life and backstory to those design. We can even see that same issue arise with Godzilla X Kong, where the apes under Scar Kings rule look more like cloned 56 y/o alcoholics than apes, and it’s really obvious that the orange little guy is going to be good.

A curious fact: Here in Brazil, Shadow has always been dubbed by a voice actor named Reginaldo Primo. He had a strong and imposing voice that always suited Shadow for us!! And when first trailer of Sonic 3 arrived, the voice actor was the same voice actor as Keannu Reeves. Keannu's voice actor was good, but the voice wasn't what we expected. So we asked Paramount, again we went to Twitter asking for our voice actor! And well, Paramount responded and Reginaldo took on the role of voicing Shadow. I would compare Deadpool and Wolverine to Sonic Movie 3. Deadpool and Sonic both fight alone to protect the family they build, while Wolverine and Shadow gave up on life because of the family they lost. That's really the only comparison i have.

Sonic 3 was fantastic. So respectful to Sonic Adventure 2 story and Jim carrey was fantastic as Robotnik, as usual. I'm glad its beating Mufasa at box office. Knowing Disney though, they won't learn the right lessons. They will just take this as a sign to make videogame movies themselves. So expect an AWFUL Kingdom Hearts live action film in a couple years. Starring black Kairi and trans Rikku.

Well to be fair to them when they do make a mistake they are not above admitting it, at least when the right leadership is in charge. It's just sadly audiences constantly told them yes they want these disney live action remakes hence the doubling down on them. So as someone who hated the idea of them from the start it is so refreshing to see people wising up to what they actually are. I also would'nt mind Disney doing video game movies especially when their so close with Square Enix. Unlike these remakes I think they actually would put effort into that especially now that they just got their ass kicked by one.
