Super Show had the Starman as well. Infact, each power up had different abilities: Fire Flower = Fire power; Starman = Super strength; *insert magical item* = Mostly super strength, but it varies.

​@NGO9000 you are correct. Due to the animators not wanting to work on Mario constantly flashing, they just said screw it and let it turn him into Fire Mario. Watch 20,000 Koopas Under the Sea for proof.
