Hits different when you know that the author he’s named after tried to commit suicide four times before he successfully killed himself in a double suicide by drowning, 6 days before his 39th birthday. Two of his previous suicide were double as well, although he was the only one to survive the first(also drowning), and neither he or his wife died in the second (sleeping pills). The wiki article is so interesting but it broke me a little. The first line of No Longer Human really spoke to him, I guess. “Mine has been a life of much shame.”

I always thought that Dazai felt that way. Dying would prove that he is human, but he wouldn't be alive to see it. By living, he ruins his chance to confirm his humanity but it will dash any chance at a will to live. For this reason, Odasaku gave him one. I also think that Dazai isn't after death more than he is after a reason to live. I think Odasaku recognized this

A lot of people have suggested that he doesn’t really want to die he just wants to feel human, or at least like something other than an empty shell, and that attempting to die is the only way he can think of achieving that goal.
