I'm an Atari 2600 kid, it was legendary in my eyes. I remember begging my dad for one but we didn't have a lot of money and, to be quite honest, he didn't really understand the whole game console idea. One day he came home with a giant box and inside it were two Atari 2600s and 53 games. To this day, 53 is still my lucky number. Apparently, my dad was at a garage sale in an affluent neighborhood looking for golf clubs and he found this box of goodies, which he bought for $10. The owner's son had gotten into big trouble and the dad was selling all his stuff to make a point...ouch. Needless to say, I became a very popular kid in the neighborhood. I remember seeing Super Mario on the NES for the first time and absolutely loosing my mind, it was a game changer. I was lucky that there were several other kids in my hood that were gamers as well so I got exposed to many of these systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, TurboGrafix 16, Neo Geo and many others. The one system that really stood out to me during this time was the Sega Genesis, I remember cutting yards so I could buy it, I was mesmerized by the Altered Beast commercial. I had countless hours of fun playing NBA Jam, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat (with blood!). When I went to college in the late 90s I lived in a 250 sq ft efficiency apartment and I ended up with a Sega Saturn, which I bought at a pawn shop. I ordered a modem that plugged into the top port (Toys R Us had to order it from Japan) and I got an adapter for the second controller port, which allowed me to use a keyboard. The web browser was a CD and I remember there was only one internet service provider in Houston at that time that would support the setup. I remember surfing the web in 97' on my Sega Saturn and playing chess on sites like Caissa. In my opinion, the Sega Saturn was the most revolutionary system of all time. Later on, I used to buy used Dreamcasts from flea markets, fix them, and repackage them with games and controllers (anyone that knows the boot loader trick knows what I am talking about right now), which helped subsidize the income of a poor college student. Then of course, the original XBOX and Halo, a truly great time in my life. I remember countless LAN parties at my house, my friends bringing their own TV with them in the backs of the hoopties. Good times. I took a long break from gaming but I got back in a few years ago with the XBOX One S and I only play Call of Duty these days. Truly great times in my life were spent with good friends around a console. I appreciate the ability to network with anyone in the world in an instant but it's just not the same as crushing your friend in Tecmo Super Bowl and watching his face in real-time. Long live the game console!

I actually really liked the sega Saturn 🪐 The system didn’t have a lot of depth to it in terms of games but it felt like a pioneer of next generation gaming at the time. Playing virtual fighter on that 3D resolution was a new experience for me as a kid and it set the stage for much more polished systems to come. To this day I still whip out the Saturn sometimes

Saturn is one of the few consoles I never had. I had genesis and then ps1. I never even seen a Saturn in person until a couple years after I got my playstation. The Saturn actually had far more depth than people realised or gave it credit for, because unfortunately most kids and people dismissed it in favour of the PS1, often without ever playing on one. I've always much preferred it to the PS1 (in fact, it's still my favourite machine ever). The console had better all round 3D and 2D, and when the machine was pushed to its capability, it was at least the equal of the PS, or even better (Panzer Dragoon Saga/Zwei, Nights, Virtua Fighter 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Sega Rally were incredible looking, let alone playing). Great RPGs, arcade conversions, first person shooters, fighting games galore, I love it. Don't get me wrong, I've got into the PSX a bit more in recent years, but lists like this often seem to cater to public opinion/popularity (I cannot understand how the PS3 is rated as the third best machine ever). Then again, it's subjective, so each to their own. What I love is that the retro scene is getting some wonderful support nowadays.

Both AD&D titles, Doom, Road Rash, NFS, Star Control II, Panzer General, The Horde, FIFA, Madden, Killing Time, Lemmings, Alone In The Dark 1 and 2 (should have just bought the first one) , P.O.'ed, which as a bit of trivia had a game-ending glitch that left players unable to complete the game. Anyway, at the original MSRP it was a non-starter but for what I spent it remains one of the consoles I enjoyed most. Turbografx 16 was fun, too.

One other benefit the PS2 had, in my opinion (not backed by any data) was that it was the first mainstream console that could also be used to watch movies, as a DVD player. It even had a fully-equipped first-party remote control available for it. This came at a time when DVD players were still relatively new and expensive, and the fact that the PS2 had the ability to play DVDs while also allowing you to play games (especially given its almost full backward-compatibility with PS1 games) was the biggest reason I decided to take the plunge and buy my PS2 even before there were any compelling games made specifically for it.

A3JT may be right. Even though themes (and other features listed above) aren't available yet, that won't mean they won't be released at all. I mean, updates and games do take a lot of time to complete. Imagine what workload gaming companies have. Not only that, but pressure and stress is also prevalent in the gaming industry. And I mean, risks that fail can stuff up the console/game. Ok, so to summarize the waffling, stuff takes time to complete.

43:38 "Why did Tandy sell their console exclusively at Radio Shack?" Because Tandy was the parent company of Radio Shack. They'd been successfully selling their computers exclusively through Radio Shack for over a decade by that point and at the time there was at least one Radio Shack in every moderately-sized city in the country. They had no reason to think it'd fail due to inaccessibility because it wouldn't.

For everybody wondering, the Dick Smith Wizzard is called that because it was released by Dick Smith Electronics, a company founded by Richard "Dick" Smith. He's a pretty prolific businessman and is well known in Australia. He definitely has a sense of humour about his name too, he sold a brand of matches called "Dickheads" and created a TV commercial using the slogan "I love Dick" although it was banned before it ever aired.
