Alt 25:28 you say 1998 when the year listed onscreen is 1988. The Etch-A-Sketch Animator 2000 did not have 2 displays, the lower panel was like a wacom tablet (but resistive rather than RF), it did not display anything. "A Game Boy Color is a Game Boy." That's just plainly and objectively incorrect when two thirds of the GBC library can't even be played on the GB. Maybe Nintendo didn't do a great job marking which GBC games work on the GB and which don't, but the GBC is a separate system that just happens to be backwards compatible with all GB games and a third of whose games just happen to be backwards compatible with the GB. That does not make it a repackaged GB.
@alexshort80553 жыл бұрын
I’ve literally just made the same comment as yourself, without reading yours. Why do so many think it’s the same system?
@kingdavid75163 жыл бұрын
Man, Nintendo's advertising must have really got to you, huh? The fact that 1/3 of the GBC library is frontwards compatible more-or-less proves it's the same system. When has a PS2 game ever been frontwards compatible with a PS1 console, or any console combination like that? If PS2 games could be played on the PS1, with less fancy textures let's say, then people would just say it's a fancier PS1, and they'd be right. Nintendo could have kept doing that, but then sales of the GBC console would have dropped. They're (potential) color-optional GB games that are designed to show an error screen when you pop it in the wrong system. It's all dollar signs - planned obsolescence. Just like how they could have released a new portable console with GBA's graphics in the mid-90s. They were milking it for profits. And it worked. Not that I think it's a bad thing. Geniuses, really.
@yagokain41893 жыл бұрын
@@kingdavid7516 Well the GBC was stronger than the base GB, it had better video chip, better cpu and more ram, but obviously they couldnt make it into a completely brand new handheld, cuz the gameboy market was MASSIVE and they were afraid that people wouldnt buy the new handheld and the new games, so they made most of their games for both systems, kind of like what you see nowadays with games like far cry 6 or assassins creed valhalla, theyre both on ps4 and 5, yet the consoles have massive differences. altho tbf it is 100% true that nintendo didnt max out the gbc, it was a really cheap handheld even back when it was released.

What I liked about the DS so much (next to its fantastic games of course) was the touchscreen. Having something like that as the main gimmick of a console often ends up in disaster, because games try to build around these gimmicks too much. It's interesting at first, but becomes more annyoying than anything else very quickly, which is something Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move struggled with a lot. But most DS games used the touchscreen a lot more subtle, for example for displaying extra information, having the menu constantly on it which then can be used via touch, or for occasional mini games. It enhanced the gameplay a lot, without becoming annyoing, because most games could still be played mostly with the controller buttons.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color was the Dreamcast of portables. That thing had an insane battery life, one of the best sticks on a portable period and a great collection of games. I'd argue that Match of the Millennium is the best fighting game on a portable system pre-PSP hands down. It's easily better than the Game Gear library wise in terms of quality. I remember the Gamepark GP32. I daresay that it's the first open-source emulator handheld, which we now see coming from small Chinese companies making systems like the Anbernic RG350 and Retroid Pocket. I wish I still had mine with me. I bought one at the Shin Yongsan electronics market in Seoul back in 2002.

23:58 That's actually pretty good. Today on my cellphone I keep about 4-5 different BASIC programming languages to experiment with. A console that touts a programming language that everyone can use and build games in is not so bad an idea. Pico-8 comes to mind. :)

fun fact, was going through my older handhelds recently to check how they held in storage over the years: Psp - inflated battery, works well after replacing it, umds still janky, still my prefered hacked system. vita - still works splendidly with the 1000 oled, though prefer the vita tv at home. gba - needed a deep clean and a shell replacement, went the extra mile and added an ips screen. back to collecting gba games again. ds - still fully charged despite not using it in over a decade. 3ds - red battery otherwise worked fine but have since replaced it with a new 2nd xl.

The Gameboy colour is separate from the original gameboy. It has its own games.
@MarcinKralka3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hate that misconception. It used twice as fast CPU, had way more RAM and most importantly had color screen and its own game library (for the most part incompatible with the original Game Boy, although all Game Boy games were compatible with GBC). The DSi still technically counts as different console as well, since it had its exclusive software/games, but aside from the new fancy operating system, it didn't matter that much I think. I don't remember about caring about anything other than playing DS games on my DSi, maybe aside from excellent Flipnote Studio app.
