This year was rough for me too in terms of the amount of plants I bought! I got stuck in this vicious cycle where I would use plant shopping as a crutch to deal with mental health issues or stress. I would see a plant I wanted and be unable to stop thinking about it until I bought it, which caused a lot of anxiety and then guilt over spending money I really shouldn’t have. I’m so happy you talk about real struggles and the darker side of plant collection. I think a lot of us inadvertently start developing a shopping addiction, especially those of us who love anthuriums and Hoyas. There’s so many varieties to collect and always something new to chase after. Happy holidays and have a great new year! ❤🎉

I think many of us are reaching plant burn out. I actually have been seriously down sizing all of 2024. I am also only going to prop the very special plants but give the away too. My reorganizing my house pant spaces feel so much better now not just crammed packed with plants. I am also trying to stick with the plants that do well for my environment. Anthuriums is not one . The velvet ones anyway. I did make an old parrot cage into a mini greenhouse for inside to rehab some plants I really like but were struggling in my high desert living conditions. Within just a few days the one bigger rehab is starting to look happy again. BUT I do not want to always keep this plant caged so t might have to go away. I can purchase a few more hoyas. I already have hangers and space for the when it warms up in spring. But really that is it for me. Very nice video. Thanks for sharing al of this information.
@anawithplants28 күн бұрын
funny enough, my next video is discussing plant burnout. it's gotten to the point it's more surprising to find someone NOT burned out on plants at one point 😂 the parrot cage greenhouse sounds innovative! thank you for watching 💚
@shadesofidaho27 күн бұрын
@@anawithplants Thankfully I still have a few people that will take plants off my hands. I hate to just compost them. The parrot cage greenhouse is working really well. It is about 4 foot tall and two foot wide. I have a smaller cute shaped one camped to the top that is a cute shape. I did not enclose that in plastic. I think I might get a heat mat but then.............. I really do not want to keep propping plants I will then need to give way. the one desperately in need of rehab plant in the parrot cage is starting to look amazing. I am just hoping I will be able to pull it out of rehab and it will stay happy. This high desert Idaho humidity can really be had on some plants. There is a photo of the prrot cage in my last video.

I went down a similar rabbit hole of growing my collection exponentially about 20 years ago and with African violets and streptocarpus. I also had an infant at the time. It got way out of control way fast. The effort to maintain a collection that size, plus the inevitable pest issues, on top of the demands of being a new mom, resulted in me getting completely burned out on the plants. In this chapter of my planty journey, I have tried to be a little more cautious with mixed results, but I definitely think back on those times as a cautionary tale. But a $20 Argentea Princess?? That had to be done. Haha.

I found gifting plants helped me tons to get me to a new frame of mind. I know this market lives from buying and reselling props but in my experience gifting untied the knot for me. How much do I need vs. how can I make others happy. A friend of mine cooks or makes sandwiches for coworkers to deal with that. I guess you gotta try yourself out what works for you but doing things for others or giving service and goods seems to be a good path in a new direction.

Hi again, I’ve been putting a few small plants into the tree fern/pon mix. I think you’re the one I got the idea from. Anyway, do you put the plants in this substrate into semi hydro?
@anawithplants26 күн бұрын
for me it depends on the genus! I think the larger anthurium roots can handle the higher moisture level with tree fern mix and semi-hydro, but I would be cautious with hoya since they like more of a wet-dry cycle.

I added Hoyas to my collection like there was no tomorrow. Do I regret it? No not really. I’ve only lost a handful of them, a couple recently due to shipping. If I really want them I can repurchase…they weren’t expensive. (Thanks Palmstreet) The expensive ones are doing well because I helicopter them. 😂 I can’t believe you bought an Argentina Princess for that price! I paid $120 for one in November 2023 for my daughter (Christmas gift) which opened the door to the Hoya rabbit hole. I am going to be more intentional on my purchases this year and I am concentrating on growing out these cuttings. I will say the Argentina Princess grew roots steadily but it took what seemed like forever to start a growth point. (I purchased one for myself after seeing my daughters Hoya) I second your PSA about the rate of adding a lot of plants to your collection. I spend a lot of time looking after my plants but it does relax me after a long day at work. I recently gave my daughter some of my Anthurium. I can’t stay on top of the watering it seems, she grows hers beautifully. I kept 4 of my favorites though and I’m trying to keep a watering schedule for just my Anthurium. I wanted a P. Patriciae but ran across a decent sized Spiritus Sancti for $30 so that will do for now. 😬
@gypsylee333Ай бұрын
I have the non variegated version of that plant and it grows so slow, that's probably why it's so expensive still. I just tried throwing a plastic bag over it for extra humidity to see if that triggers the vine to grow the leaves it already started.

How come if you have the exact cross that made the delta force, you can’t call it a delta force? I don’t get that
@anawithplantsАй бұрын
because the delta force is the name of a specific plant from a batch of clarinervium x pedatoradiatum seedlings. so it can be shared via clones (cuttings) or tissue culture. due to the high variation in anthurium seedlings, it's difficult to reproduce a plant that looks exactly like the delta force.
