The actual custom is to leave kaayapeksha and phalapeksha. Apeksha means desire... Kaaya means body. leave desire/love for body and materialistic things Phala means result. Leave desire for the fruit(result) of karma Which in turn helps us to move forword in our spiritual journey. Note: above points are a reference from some puranas I read.

When people refer to shopping, it does not include everyday essentials like grocey and soap and shampoo. It means buying flashy furniture, unnecessary gold items, stacked up sarees or millions of tableware etc etc. my bua used to live in the same independent housing complex back in very early 2000’s when infosys was just taking off. And my bus’s son went to the same college as Sudha ji’s son in USA. Though they were in different streams. She was simple back then also. Not much showiff in the house. Simple house with lot of plants. Essential items only in the house. No extra decoration and all. No flashy fancy stuff. But she buys good artisan hand made decoration pieces directly from the artisans to encourage their craft. But that’s all.
