Was he really kind? In the real world if a man leaves his sick wife for a younger prettier girl he's usually considered a douchebag and an asshole and the girl is considered a homewrecker. Not to mention that it is kind of implied (in the books) that he didn't really love Lyanna, he only married her to complete his interpretation of the prince that was promised prophecy, he believed that a line in the prophecy stated that the prince that was promised must have 3 children. The show kind of implies the same thing though because in the show we see Dayne try to kill Ned on sight on orders of Rhaegar- he didn't care about Lyanna or her family(after all he did ride out to fight her two remaining brothers in the battle of the trident), he only cared about her offspring. Lyanna isn't much better either - she literally finds out that her future father-in-law killed her brother and father brutally and still decides to marry into that family. Add that to the fact that she knew he was married to Elia and still decided to marry him, and this clearly shows that Lyanna didn't care about anyone's feelings but her own. LIke I said in the real world we would consider both of them to be the lowest of the low but in fiction, we see this as a tragic love story.

1:02 Ned Stark: you know nothing robert baratheon
@BK22074 жыл бұрын
Seems to me that Rhaegar and Lyanna were an reinterpretation of Lancelot and Guinevere. Both loved each other, but because of their passions, members of the Round Table started to hate each other, King Arthur's authority was questionned to the point where he had no other choice but to make war to his best knight and loyal friend. Their love started a series of event that brought the end of the arthurian age. Both survived the downfall and both went seperately on a road of repentance for the remaining of their lifes at the price of their own selfish desires.

Nobody talks about Aerys Targeryan mad King...how he still supported his son knowing he was wrong to ditch elia martell yet still he went to wars against great houses for his sons mistake.

Raeghar was one the one most irresponsible person in this word. How could he thought that everything would be fine after « fake a kidnapping » with Lyanna Stark. They were stupid and irresponsible. Because of them, Elia and her children died in a tragic way
@thenablade858 Жыл бұрын
Because he couldn’t predict the future? Brandon was the one who thought riding up to King’s Landing for a fight over (false) information was a good idea. Aerys was the one who ordered Arryn to murder Robert and Ned (and he refused). Rhaegar was not a prophet.

I hope Robert got to the afterlife and Rhaegar and Lyanna were both like "Yeah, she probably should've married you, Robert. We would've avoided a huge war and we didn't even need Jon to stop the zombies. Sorry I stole your promised, Robert."

If he had his war hammer in the afterlife, he would bear it down on Rhaegar again.

They would never say this. Jesus, people. Read the books. Robert was a drunk who had dozens of bastards he abandoned + was gleeful over Rhaenys and Aegon’s death.

“Rheagar never liked killing” yeah but he sure didn’t mind starting a war that killed thousands. It’s funny how the starks are right about a lot of things. The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword. Kinda speaks to rheagars character, he didn’t like killing but he didn’t seem to mind other people killing each other for him. If you’re going to start a war at least fight in that war not wait until the last battle to show up with an army. He deserved a hammer to the chest whether it was for love or not.

Rhaegar didn't start the war, Robert and Aerys did. Years of pent-up frustration at the Mad King reached a boiling point and tipped over when Rhaegar and Lyanna eloped, giving Robert and his allies the perfect excuse (alongside the death of Ned's brother and father) to go to war.
@highlyopinionated5611 Жыл бұрын
Last time I checked, Rhaegar wasn't an omniscient prophet who knew what the exact outcome of his actions would be. I think you are giving him way to much credit.
@cristinademartini66539 ай бұрын
@@highlyopinionated5611 sorry, but it's a bullsh*t: he was the crown prince, the heir to the throne, so he should know that power comes from political alliances and stability with your vassals; so if you disrespect those alliances and your vassals's rights (by this move, Rhaegar insulted the rights in primis of House Martell, since he publicily humiliated and then cast aside their beloved princess Elia; House Baratheon, since Lyanna was betrothed to Robert; and in the end House Stark, since he took away Rickard Stark's daughter without his knowning and consent and ruin his alliance to the Baratheons), you'll have to face a rebellion.

Rhaegar on his way to commit yet another unspeakably dumb act for the sake of some vague-ass prophecy.

I would love to see a prequel just based on Rhaegar. He sounds like such an intriguing character. And I know he ain’t got many fans in this comment section but he sounded like a decent guy. But problem is he chose love over family. I think if they ever did a prequel this is the most interesting story to do one.
@googleloogle43794 жыл бұрын
@Gaius Wyrden don’t get me wrong I am not painting him as a hero as he was not. But he was not evil he did many mistakes like every human being and put he’s desires before pride and family. But everything I read and watch about the character he seemed to care for the people. He was not a man driven by power but by love.

@@googleloogle4379 In what way does he care for the people? he plays a few tunes to the serfs and that means he's invested in their wellbeing?

@@googleloogle4379 Rhaegar is essentially Griffith from Berserk and I am not saying it as a compliment: A handsome man on the outside, a repulsive and callous monster on the inside.

Well a lot of people know he’s a decent guy. But even decent guys can do the stupidest things that hurt people. Like a decent guy can cheat or indirectly hurt another person. It’s never black and white. But the thing is that this situation could have been handle a lot differently. It wasn’t just Lyanna’s “kidnapping” that caused a riot it was the fact her brother died and her father died and then the king asked for Robert and Ed to die and so on and so forth. Maybe if Rhaegar had convinced his dad or overthrew his dad to then strike down Lyanna’s engagement to Robert and make her his second wife then things would’ve been okay. But the reality is that the only victims here are the men that died and Rhaegar’s wife and kids. That’s it. Not him. And definitely not Lyanna.

A decent guy would protect his children. He did not do that. He was mad and selfish

There´s actually 2 hints no one has ever seemed to pick up on. 1. Ned looking at his feet in the crypt when Rob talked about ending the Targ line, while a couple scenes earlier or later we get Catelyn warning Bran about the castle parkour, and that she knows he always looks at his feet before lying. 2. When they find the Direwolf pups. Eddard is stern to all his kids, about the wolves; not going to survive, so better a quick death. Jon gives Ned a speech about houses, words and sigils and Ned flips 180 degrees and allows the kids to adopt the puppers. The first time I read that part I thought to myself: "Why the hell do you scorn your real kids, but you genuinly listen to the bastard?"

Wow, great observations...He listened to him because maybe Jon is not only his nephew but his prince.

It's like Maester Aemon said: "Love is the death of duty". How many died because Rhaegar chose love over duty.
