Not surprised why Mr.Bean was so successful. His body movement and presentation is just so amazing that you don't need to understand English to know what he's trying to tell. I remember watching this as kid and I remember that the only times I heard anything translated in Polish was the opening and credits.
@sagichdirdochnicht4653
@sagichdirdochnicht4653 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I watched it as a Kid and couldn't speak a single word of English. No translations (maybe the Credits, but at the time it ran on TV, I couldn't even read). Funny AF. I know I occationally asked what XYZ meant, but it really wasn't important at all. You understand 100% of the humor and 98% of the "story" anyway. It's just the fact, that this isn't "classic" Commedy. It's 99% visual and can ONLY work due to Atkinsons amazing facial acting. Truely fantastic work. A show, that young and old find equally funny that doesn't even need Audio and / or Subtitles at all to just work. Another great benefit: That show never went trough "translation limbo", wich killed many Shows and Movies, that were decent or good in original form.

We somehow got ahold of tickets for the Mr bean holiday movie, and even though up to that point we'd never seen Mr bean, she loved it, to the point that once it was available for rental we'd rent it every now and again, and she still laughs chaotically whenever we bring up an episode to watch. Seeing the first series, it was clear that they didn't know what the character and story was going to be. Atkinson mentioned the original concept was life revolving around two bicycle thieves in London in the 1980s, but it then went into a concept about a period piece comedy in the Medieval times. It was also set in an alternate universe, which was by and large abandoned going into series two, where the series became historical fiction satire comedy.
@blatherskite3009
@blatherskite3009 3 жыл бұрын
I love the first series of Bladder, but it's coming from a slightly different place to the later ones - it's more of an alternate-history Shakespeare-pastiche thing. That's not to say it's more "high-brow" - it loves a sheep-shagging joke every bit as much as later Bladders - but there's an element to the first series of needing a working knowledge of Richard III, Macbeth, etc., to get some of the jokes. Later seasons dispensed with that and broadened out the appeal, I guess.
@sboinkthelegday3892
@sboinkthelegday3892 3 жыл бұрын
@@blatherskite3009 I dunno, my first introduction to Shakespeare was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead as a very young child, and the experience was just brilliant. It was like figuring out a sci-fi novel and pushed me into that genre ever since. It was like Langoliers, but, you know. Deliberately funny. I guess Mr. Bean's humor works so well even with the caveat that most people like referential, self-assuring humor, like being part of an inside joke. So it has the strength of not having many complications in it that normally would make a person lose their sense of humor, due to insecurity about not being sure if they get the joke or not. When somebody "gets the joke" let's be frank, it doesn't need to be that much of a joke to get, people just laugh anyway for the social convention of it. Otherwise it will become difficult to adhere to some social norms, like weaponizing the making fun of other people when that's what your social grouping calls for.
@blatherskite3009
@blatherskite3009 3 жыл бұрын
@@sboinkthelegday3892 Interesting... "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" is a great example of where the first series is coming from. R&GAD assumes a basic knowledge of Shakespeare's Hamlet and spins off to have some fun with it, moving background characters to the foreground, etc. Similarly, "The Black Adder" takes Shakespeare's "Richard III" - nowadays seen as something of a Tudor-era character-assassination job on the previous administration - and subverts the Shakespeare version to present an alternate take on what might really have happened if the victors hadn't been the ones to write the history books. Like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, it absolutely *can* be enjoyed without knowledge of the work it references, but obviously there's a higher level of cleveness going on that only becomes apparent when you have a greater understanding of the framework that it is having fun with :) Oh man, The Langoliers... I actually have a soft-spot for the film version, dodgy CG and all. Orgasmic paper-tearing guy is an absolute scream. He chews the scenery harder than the Langoliers themselves do :)

Understandable :) Considering he made a career out of being an awkward, gangly, beetle-browed, rubber-faced git, he really did manage to look quite dapper in that Elizabethan get-up. imho Alan Rickman totally borrowed Rowan's Blackadder II look for his Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" - minus the ruff, of course; because wrong era - and he also managed to look uncommonly dapper. Conclusion: the look works :)

Don't think I've ever realized the ease they must've had to make it (the Brazilian dub did translate his dialog and the plaques but that's it) but that show will always have a place in my heart for making a pretty lousy summer vacation trip to Rio das Ostras a bit better. Also, the animated show was pretty solid, watched it with my little brother whenever I was babysitting him.

08:45 Love how they included a clip to illustrate the Mr Bean lip wobble, then edited in the black bar directly over his lips so that we can't really see it anyway.

The comedian who refused to go after him was Richard Curtis, when they were both at university. Seeing Rowan Atkinson performed resulted in Richard Curtis deciding to concentrate on writing, rather than performing. Curtis went onto write Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral plus numerous other movies, TV shows.

I dig the videos regardless of what the background looks like. Your chill way of telling us facts like a couple of mates just rambling on about fun facts, is great. Keep it up.

I'm just waiting for them to get back into the studio and use the greenscreen to put the concrete wall behind him and see how long it takes people to notice.

Loved watching Mr Bean growing up. Didn't realize it had English dialogue until I was like 11 years old or so.

I do appreciate him as a cultural phenomena, but if I would watch Mr. Bean nowadays, I most likely would cringe a lot and wouldn't be able to enjoy it. My brain is weird.

I moved to the UAE in 2018, I remember leaving the airport and one of the first adverts seeing on the side of the road on my way to the airport was for a local phone company featuring Mr Bean. I was shocked and confused as I did not expect to see him out here, then I realised it's popular here along with Tom and Jerry because you don't need to understand any language to like it.

Shout out from South Africa 🇿🇦 Proud to say that I was raised on Mr Bean, and now my son is too. But he also has the advantage of the animated series (which he's mad about) along with the original "15 episodes" (which I still don't quite believe).

Not sure whether people have seen it but Rowan does a 45 minute documentary/mockumentary called "Laughing Matters" I think which goes into alot of his humour and how he thinks the physical comedy works. Well worth a watch.
