Another great video Ash. Good tips on how to reduce the bulk of modern day wallets and phones. I find modern car keys a pain with their bulky design. The beauty of a book is it never runs out of battery. Always have one on my travels. Keep up the good work.

Enjoyable video. I carry a fourteen year old leather wallet because it is what I feel comfortable in carrying. I use a canvas messenger bag again something that I've grown accustomed to carrying my MacBook Air, notebook, pens and power chargers with flash drives. I save on sunglasses by having my prescription glasses with the changing color in sunny conditions. As for a watch, I do running and walking at all times of the day so I have an Apple Watch with a large case for ease of use and keeping track of my times and mileage.

I notice many people advocate the narrow minimal wallet. I find they tend to slip out of my pocket and get lost. So I carry a nice bi-fold one which has a very nice leather divider to keep my small bills apart from my larger ones. I am curious if I am the only one who has issues with small wallets slipping out of pockets? Thank you for your attention

@@jonstern7511 It's one of the great benifits to suits. Notice how the rise of man-purses and the decline of suits came hand-in-hand. I carry a large wallet from the 1930s with no issue, and never have to worry about my phone falling out of my pocket.

Hello Ash, a couple of things that stood out for me: the first one is the inconsistency of wearing the watch that costs thousands of dollars or pounds and using a fountain pen that is tens of dollars or pounds. The Safari was originally designed for students in Germany. At least something with a gold nib would be better. The Safari is not wrong, but there is better. The other thing is why carry the pocket torch or flashlight when your iPhone has it also? Otherwise I enjoyed the video. Glad to see you finding something better thanoleskine.

I have a case almost identical to your eyeglass case (a different leather, but same construction) that I use to carry a couple of fountain pens. I’m sure mine is a bit smaller, but it’s the same design, and works perfectly for that application. As a long-time wearer of spectacles full time, I only carry a pair of sunglasses, though I prefer a hard-sided case for those.

Regarding the Rolex, I recently purchased the Tudor GMT two-tone Silver and Gold, which I love. While the Rolex and Tudor do share strong similarities, I think the Tudor has a slightly more retro feel, which I appreciate, not to mention a solid build quality, and you can’t beat the price to quality ratio and availability of the Tudor, in my opinion. Your point about the Root Beer being worn in the fall is spot on - the colors harmonize so well with the season. Thank you for your terrific videos - very much appreciated!

I notice Ash that you don't carry a (legal carry of course) a pen knife? I allways carry a little Victorinox inox pen knife, its not the red handled version but the military version with aluminium scales and thicker (and sharper blade) it's a low volume size unlike the red version and is so handy to have. They come in various guises, mine has scissors, and are quite inexpensive. Only time I dont carry, whether the knife is legal carry or not, is in the pub or any other crowded place.

Lots of those products are extreme for the sake of extremeness. I actually remember a KZbinr I like (was it Danny Gonzalez or Drew Gooden?) talking about some of these so-called tactical products, and he found they were often cheap or outright silly. Even if they are as advertised, as Ash said, they're only useful for extremely niche situations that most people will never encounter. If you ask me, buy a regular flashlight. Not everything needs to be sublime-quality.

I carried a pocket knife gifted to me by my now-passed-on great grandmother, but found no use for it. If I were going hiking (I'd rather not) or camping (I'd rather die), I'd probably find some use for it, but there are very few day-to-day situations in which a pocket knife holds any use. I feel similarly about a handkerchief. Any uses for it are either silly (polishing a wine glass?), damaging to the cloth (getting shoe polish all over it), or just not a good idea. (I know pulling out a handkerchief for a crying lady is chivalrous and all, but what sane person wants to dry their eyes on something you've been stuffing in your pocket (maybe even right on your rear end!) for a year and collecting lint?) My everyday carry consists of items I use all the time. I carry my phone, wireless earbuds, my wallet, my keys, and something I highly recommend: a travel fragrance atomizer. Anything I don't use at least once a week I keep out of my suits.

Hi Ash, I watch all your videos trying to pick up some tips for a middle aged man like myself, but sometimes I have to say to myself ‘He can’t be serious’ 😮 As lovely as that leather jacket is, I don’t think it looks very appropiate on a middle aged chap. It’s like you’re trying too hard to look younger and hip. But when you pulled out the bright scarf and tied it around your neck in the way that you did is the point when I nearly spat my tea out. If you were to walk around Cardiff or Liverpool or Leeds or here in the Netherlands where I live, I fear you would be projecting a very effeminate image of yourself and opening yourself up to some serious ridicule and cat calls. I really find it hard to imagine that you would wear such a combo and that no one else has said anything in the comments. I hope you will take my remarks without offence. I really do enjoy your videos, but sometimes the advice you give or the image you wish us to project seems totally out of sorts in today’s modern world.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide Жыл бұрын
No offence taken at all Chris, in fact, I deeply welcome such comments. I do encourage chaps to be a bit experimental when it comes to clothing - for if we don't try something new, we will never know if it is something that we will like, or even love in the future. That particular leather jacket is a point in case. I was a regular wearer of leather jackets of all kinds in the 80s and 90s and enjoyed the experience, however, I ceased wearing leather many years ago. Perhaps nostalgia was affecting me, but when I was approached by that company and asked if I would like to pick one of their jackets to try, I thought "Why not" and picked the item seen in the video. I was very pleased with the garment, but I struggled to find a place for the jacket in my personal style portfolio. Whilst I am always prepared to experience a bit of avantgarde in my wardrobe, I do think this was too young and edgy for a man of 52 and if I'm being honest, I have not worn the jacket since filming this video. I did put it on a few weeks ago to go out with my wife - she took one look at me and said "NO!". It is no reflection on the jacket, which is actually excellent quality for the price and no doubt would look great on the right person, but sadly I have come to accept that my advancing years do mean that such items should be excluded from the wardrobe and replaced by the timeless elegance of classic clothing, that will always look great and compliment my frame and age. But I do stand by my initial ideology - never be afraid to give something a try, even if you think it will not suit you - you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!! You may be right in regards to the NL, but in modern-day Cardiff and Liverpool you could easily wear your pajamas and slippers in the street and no one would look twice, such is the degradation of standards in society these days, where most people do not even own shoes with laces anymore. By the way, I really love the NL and really think it is one of the more stylish countries in Europe. I have enjoyed many, many adventures in your beautiful and chic nation. In fact, I was only chatting with a good friend the other day and we both agreed that Maastricht was our favourite city in mainland Europe and that we should plan our next visit soon. Best regards, Ash

@@TheChapsGuide Wow, thank you for the lenthy reply. Just to add that I am a Londoner born and bred and moved to the Netherlands five years ago to make a new life with my Dutch wife in her home town, and to escape London and give my kids a better life. My late dad was a true chap of Polish heritage, and would’ve agreed with many of your videos. He never owned a pair of jeans in his life and would not step out of the house unless he was in a suit, or a sports jacket, or a safari jacket if he was in a casual situation. He was former Polish air force and like you, got to attend one of the Queen’s garden parties. Unfortunately, it is a very different world now when it comes to style, and especially here in the Netherlands. No one wears a suit, and if they do, it is never with a tie, and it is always a blue suit teamed with pointy brown shoes. They love brown shoes here. Most of the time though in a corporate enviroment, it is just a white shirt and casual trousers or even jeans with the obligatory brown shoes. Although I enjoy your videos and styling advice, a lot of times I just feel that ship has long sailed and you are just preaching to a small group in a big and very different world. But please continue to make your videos. They are very interesting and informative. Oh, and when I go shopping with my wife and I am sometimes drawn to a certain item of clothing, she will just give me this look and say “Err, No”, and I sheepishly put it back on the rail. Just like she would’ve done with that leather jacket of yours. 😀
