The structure “noun/pronoun +的+ noun” indicates possession. When the noun following “的” is a term of kinship or indicates a person, “的” can be omitted.

的 is used a lot in China today when it’s totally unnecessary. It all came from the foreign language influence. 红苹果is perfect Chinese, but some people preferred to say 红色的苹果 which sounds word from a child.
