Today we're going to explore the pros and cons of the Cobbler Shaker vs. the Boston Shaker. For those that want to get into home bartending and need a good shaker kit, we want to give you the information you need to make a good decision.
Of course, we have a bartender starter kit right in our store, which you can find here:
awesomedrinks....
Of Course, the straight up shaker kits are also available!
awesomedrinks....
We will show you how to properly use a cobbler shaker and a bit on the boston shaker, although we already have a great video on how to use a boston shaker available on youtube.
How To Use A Boston Shaker / Bartending 101:
• How To Use A Boston Sh...
While we prefer the user of a boston shaker for ease of cleaning, taking apart and general "cool factor" the most popular cocktail shaker that people buy is no doubt the cobbler shaker, or 3-piece cocktail shaker.
The cobbler shaker comes with all three pieces and is generally a cost effective solution to making cocktails and drinks that require shaking. However, our preference is the Boston shaker because it cleans easy and comes apart easy without being too much more expensive.
The Boston shaker can be harder to buy on some websites because they don't tell you which parts you get and which you need to buy separately. There is also a slight educational curve when it comes to cocktail shaking with a boston shaker which is easy to get over but intimidating tools are always a barrier to entry.
Pick the shaker that makes you feel best and upgrade as you see fit to whatever you find more advanced and fun.

Thanks, I imagined this one being a 3 minute video but time got away from me. I know holding someone's attention on KZbin passed the three minute mark is rough. So I try to keep energy high and information flowing along side camera angle changes and anything to hold someone's attention even an extra 30 seconds :)

I've had a cobbler shaker top come off while shaking and the strainer let the drink sprinkle out while shaking 🤣😂 Dont shake while buzzed lol.... I think the Boston shaker is the way to go.... less hassle, less cleaning issues...

I made drinks in a blender before, I just dumped the ice in and didnt mind, it tasted fine, I bought a cobbler shaker recently and I dont have to same issue or pulling it apart, maybe its because I often just make a drink for myself and drink it over the course of an afternoon or evening before i make another, but I never find myself making batch drinks

Tin on tin for me too! Boston or mezclar depending on how many cocktails are being made and how much aeration is required! Do like a cobler though, I have a giant one that fits 9 cocktails in 🤣

You don’t actually need a Hawthorn strainer. Crack and strain with a Boston set or 18-28 set (18 oz. tin with 28 oz. tin). As a bartender with 18.5 years under my suspenders, I prefer the most minimal and efficient approach. Fast and clean-definitely where it’s at!

Did I mention you can just crack and strain in this video, or did I cut that part out...? I can't remember. I think I left a bit of it in there, but maybe not. I was reducing certain things to bring down total time.

Boston shakers: My suggestion is to not put the glass so tight (don't slam it) into the shaker. Cobbler shakers are fine too if you don't buy one from Walmart or Kmart. Look online and buy one made in Japan like YUKIWA (sorry, they aren't made in USA or Germany anymore). The Problem: They're expensive and kinda small (best to buy the 500ml size) but they're rock hard and don't stick or scratch. Also; if you want to find really practical Boston shakers look for "Mr. Boston" Shaker tins or "Langner" tins from home bartending kits from the 1960's-early 1980's. They're great, made in USA and they never stick. You can find them online (Ebay) if you're patient.

I recently got into mixing cocktails at home and I currently use a cobbler and a parisian. I just can't seem to find any decent tin on tin boston shakers around here in Sweden. And the ones that I do find are super expensive. So I'm happy with this combo. The cobbler is a tiny one, 350ml, but so far it's been just the right size for every single serving cocktail I've tried. I like it a lot and my friends find it easy to use as well.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
The smaller ones do tend to be easier to pull apart I've found, but maybe that's because they don't change shape as much (not as much longer tin to seal). The largest the tin the more cumbersome it is to pull off. But, when one doesn't have access to some of the stuff, that does make selection limiting. The parisian is like a boston shaker in many regards. The one I have is easy to get off because the lip of the lid is slightly curved in to stop that seal from occurring as tight.
@FuttFel
@FuttFel 5 жыл бұрын
@@cmcocktails Indeed. I haven't had any issues getting the cobbler apart, the top part always comes off pretty easy every time. I just give the cap a little twist. The parisian can be a bit tricky though, I've had to rock the top part off a couple of times, but other than that it's worked very well for me. I see no need to get a boston shaker at this time, other than to just "complete" the toolset I have in the kitchen. I'm a bit of a gear nerd, so it's likely I'll get myself one at some point anyways!

One thing I will say I prefer the Cobbler Shaker for is egg whites. I find I can actually seal it compared to the Boston shaker. There is an extra bonus with the Boston shaker is that the glass can double as a stir drink vessel. Sure the tins can be used but a clear glass is best to see dilution.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have used egg white with a cobbler as well, but I just end up being lazy and using the boston shaker for it rather than dirtying two devices.

I love my tin on glass Boston shaker, but sometimes use a small cobbler when I have to mix a quick single-dose short drink. Another shaker that I love (aesthetically) is the Parisian... sexy lines, looks very cool, but man, it's always a nightmare to open, it gets locked pretty hard :/
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't bring out the Parisian because, well, it would make the video longer and, I stopped selling them because they took too long to sell. But I bet I could market them again pretty well, once I can get our store out of the red :)

I have both a Boston and a cobbler shaker. The cobbler shaker gets stuck like it’s getting paid for it. It’s incredibly annoying to have to fight with it every time I make a drink. The Boston one is a lot easier to use, in my opinion.

I got a 1L Cobler Shaker in aluminium that I make bulk quantity beverage in and then pour from the shaker as I need a refill, keeps cold in the fridge for a long time. However if I’m making a single serving I do it in a boston shaker, if I’m lazy I’ll even just drink from the pint glass.
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
if you've watched the show for awhile you'll see Ian drink from the tin from time to time :) To make double quantities we usually just use two boston shakers at a time (at parties). Usually Dan and I, and we both build the same drink simultaneously and shake. That usually gets us 6-8 full cocktails :) Which is enough for 2-3 people the way we pour :)

Yeah, I thought the cobbler is more practical and easier to maintain (no glass) but unless you buy a perfect one it spills and so on. I ordered a tin on tin octagonal B-shaker and a glass too for good measure. Will definitely scour your channel for inspiration man. PS. Thanks for the tip about buying a stirring-spoon with the red end. Most of the ones I saw on the internet have discs but the stirring ease you talked about won me over. Cheers!

I’m a cobbler... No shoes, just booze Mostly tiki n Chicago south side... learned from this channel! (Feel free to send me shit) The strainer helps me more then a hindrance, chi-south side is easy enough if u don’t shake it to death n shred the mint (which isn’t really needed). Still always have a strainer handy tho..

I have been a KZbin bartender for 14 years, neither have I but I have people message me saying they did. My guess is they chilled a drink, rinsed it with hot water and didn’t have tempered glass and shatter after hitting. But, I also know people are simply nervous they will break it

Hey Derrick what about the Parisian shaker? This is one I have been thinking about getting as I build my home bar. I dont have an actual shaker right now (using a little life hack of a mason jar dont judge lol). So my choice right now personally is parisian shaker or tin on tin boston. Pros and cons?

It’s a fine shaker and I used to sell them but I really did not get the traction on sales so I stopped carrying them. It’s mainly just added style points over a standard shaker.

Why didnt you talk about the Parisian shaker? looks so cool but is even a bigger pain then the cobbler XD
@cmcocktails
@cmcocktails 5 жыл бұрын
Mainly because the video was cobbler vs. boston shaker. KZbin viewers are impatient, too much content and they stop watching. Too much information and they tend to get confused. The way most youtube channels have to combat that problem is to keep video length as short as possible. Had I added cobbler too this it would have put it at the ten minute mark and I'd get all these complainers saying "you talk too much", so I tried to keep it down. And, from my experience very few people ask or care about Parisian shakers for some reason. I used to sell them at awesomedrinks but they sold so slow. I just stopped carrying them (that and they were from a vendor that I only used for those products so it was sorta a pain).

That cobbler shaker is the sweet spot right in the middle, competitively close (if not the same) as a stock boston shaker. Smaller ones are a waste of your time if you're making more than a drink for yourself, and larger ones are obnoxious :)
