Hybrids are still great for those of us living in apartments/condos. I owned a Model 3 for about 3 years while living in a condo, and I got sick of having to rely on supercharging or public charging. I traded it for a 2023 Prius about a month ago and I absolutely love it

I think this is a legit issue at this point. But in the end, how did it differ from going to a gas station? Does your town not have many chargers yet? I could definitely see it if you had to rely on 3rd party chargers. Really hope this changes soon.

@@khaavi it was a huge pain in the ass using public charging when I had my Model 3. Using superchargers to recharge degrades the battery faster too. Even Tesla will say you’re supposed to rely on home charging and use superchargers on road trips

@khaavi putting 10 gallons in a tank takes about 5 minutes then you go 600 miles. At a supercharger it takes 30min to charge from empty to full, it goes 300 miles give or take.

I and my family have had 8 Toyotas(for 4 people) over the past 10 years. Love the cars and the truck. I really wanted a Rav4 Prime when the old $7500 Fed credit was still in effect where you claim it on your taxes. Every dealer I went to that had one marked up their Prime to wipe out the tax credit. None would deal and there were so few produced. That experience really soured me with dealerships. I am seriously considering Tesla and it's one price ordering so I do not have to deal with the dealer.

@raggs2007 I bought a RAV4 Prime back in June of 2020, and it is such an AMAZING car!!! It was really meant to be, because even though I had done the research I wasn’t actively looking to buy one because of how hard to find they are. I went to the dealership with my fiancé for him to buy a car and for shits and giggles I asked the salesman if they had any Primes, and he pointed to now my car. I was really shocked that they had the car to start with, and after test driving it I was completely sold on the efficiency, Toyota’s exceptional build quality, and the look of the car. Now, I’ve owned the car for almost 3 years and I couldn’t be happier! I always get at least 50 miles of EV range, which is more than enough for me to commute 30 miles and still have enough charge to run errands. It’s also not necessary to charge on 240 volts, so there’s an extra $1,000+ savings compared to the Tesla. I plug the Prime in at work as well and it’s usually done charging in a few hours. The best part is that if I’m going out of town or driving more than 50 miles I have the hybrid power train to get me there without ever having to stop and wait on it to charge! It’s also extremely efficient in hybrid mode so it’s still incredibly fun to drive with the electric torque, but it uses Toyota’s very impressive battery management technology to power everything. Another huge benefit is that if I’m on the interstate and I want to charge the EV battery I can put the car in charge mode, and it will recharge the battery to 80% in less than an hour, so when I get to where I’m going I can go back to EV mode in city traffic. I got extremely lucky because dealerships hadn’t started to mark up as much as they did through the heart of the pandemic, but I believe it was a sign from God for me to buy this car considering the circumstances. I have absolutely nothing against Tesla, but right now I believe I plug in hybrid is a much better option than a full EV.

@@DylanTheDriver better option for you. It's all about the person's circumstances who's buying it. I own a prius prime and love it! However they offering me $19,000 for it after 3 years of owning it. I paid $19K for it! The only issue is I can't use the heat like I need to to keep ev range and I hate oil changes! Plus a full electric would eliminate gas completely. I can charge at work also saving cost.

I bought a Model Y Performance back in June 2020, and over 71k miles later, am still very happy with it. Tesla no longer qualified for the tax credit back then, so you can pick one up even cheaper than when I bought mine. It took me literally 30 minutes from the time I placed my order and submitted information to Tesla, until I picked it up about a month later. I then spent another 40 minutes or so going over the car as it supercharged at the Tesla store. The price I saw when I placed my order was the price I saw on the invoice. I couldn't legally pick it up in Wisconsin, so had to have my brother drive me to Illinois to pick it up (but I have to pay WI tax and registration fees, go figure). But this gave me the perfect opportunity to get a feel for how it drives on the hour drive back home. Only significant issue was one of the Autopilot cameras wasn't aligned properly, so I couldn't use Autopilot for the first two weeks or so until I could get a service appointment. But it allowed me to get used to 1-pedal driving, where letting off on the accelerator slows the car down, and will hold it at a stop too. I have since driven it on multiple long range road trips ranging anywhere from 500 to 6300 miles. And with the supercharger network, long distance trips are a relative breeze. Aside from the stuff I mentioned, other reasons to go Tesla are the high crash safety ratings, the over the air updates adding new software features and bug fixes, Dog/Camp mode (keeps the a/c or heat on when in park, and with Dog mode, puts a message on the screen for passerby to read that the climate control is on), and the performance for the price.

I disagree with the road trip comment. I’ve done over 25,000 road trip miles in 1.5 years. Mostly 4-5k mile trips. I think what’s much more important is what routes will one take. I agree, the Tesla road trip experience and the supercharger network is a far superior way to travel and fits the human 2-3 hours followed by 15 minutes of rest duty cycle perfectly. I have road tripped extensively in traditional gas, hybrid, PHEV and all electric.
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl Жыл бұрын
That actually kind of depends. Interstates do tend have more chargers, but they also have a lot more EVs, which can often mean a greater chance at having to wait in line, in spite of the increased charger capacity. This is especially an issue if you are driving a CCS car and do not have access to Tesla superchargers. Back roads also tend to involve slower driving speeds, which means the same car has a higher range, and needs fewer kWh at each charging session to get the range it needs. (You can theoretically get back road efficiency on the interstate by driving slow, but only by being very annoying to other drivers and possibly getting rear-ended).

@@ab-tf5fl I’ve done about 7k miles off the Tesla SC network and never had to wait…but the last time I was using the Green River EA station with my model Y a line formed while we were walking the dogs. The two R1Ts were still there trying to get enough juice and a bunch of other cars showed up. I felt pretty bad and left immediately as I was just trying to save money by avoiding the Tesla station across town. Of course the 4th EA charger wasn’t working…
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl Жыл бұрын
@@brendykes1202 That experience precisely is why it is often better in a CCS car to just take the back roads, provided that any CCS chargers on them exist. Fewer drivers taking that route means less chance of lines. Also, in many cases, the chargers on back roads are slower chargers than what's available on the interstate. But, as a Bolt driver, I actually see that as an asset because it deters people in other cars from taking that route and using that charger unless they absolutely have to, thereby further reducing the chance of lines. But a 50 kW charger limitation makes no difference to me because the car can't do more than 50 kW anyway.

I just made that decision, and my choice was the 2024 Prius LE NOT a Tesla. Partly it was Elon Musk. But it was also not having to worry about range, not having to put a new circuit into my garage, not having to worry about a $20000 battery out of warranty (and thus long term value proposition for the used car), and being able to deal with Toyota and not Tesla (Both closer and better in terms of customer service in or out of warranty). I admit Tesla makes a good EV but I don't think we're ready for EVs yet in the numbers people seem to want to get to (because the grid won't support EVERYONE having them yet). I'll let you pioneers bull your way through EV ownership and stick with the established gas network (with excellent fuel economy to take advantage of it).

until the convenience of charging stations approaches gas stations, there will be a strong use case for hybrids and plug-in hybrids. note I didn't say 'the number of' because your home can charge your EV, and many people will do that. But range anxiety has to go away, and the only practical way to do that is to have level 3 charging stations at least every 50 miles all over the country.

If you can't charge at home, it's just like getting gas, spend 10-15 min at a charge station here and there as needed. As battery tech continues to improve, charge times will get shorter and it will become even less significant. Charge stations will be everywhere. Once backed by a mega pack, the charge stations will be able to deal out massive amounts of power and refill over time on whatever the incoming input limits may be.

this is for people talking about range anxiety in country areas. i just picked up a new model y performance in middle of march and have already done 8k miles in it. it’s my new work car / daily driver and i plan to possibly have one of the highest mileage Y’s in the country. those 8000 miles consisted of visiting multiple properties all over kentucky, indiana, ohio, and western illinois, doing anywhere between 200-300 miles a day. you do have to think about range a little bit more, but range anxiety isn’t necessarily some thing that I felt after the first couple days of using the car. Before I plan out my next day, I would enter in all the addresses I would need to visit in the Tesla navigation system. the car auto processes the night before how much range i needed to leave my hotel with before heading out the next day, if i needed a supercharger stop it would also advise where and when that would need to take place. i will say, there was maybe 2 of my days that i needed to go fairly far off route in Ohio, probably adding about a hour and a half to my day, to go to a supercharger or else i wouldn’t make it to my destination, but those were also heavy use days where i was pushing the limits of 300 mi, and one where i needed to go about 400. what would’ve solve that issue is if I would have purchased the CCS adapter before picking up the car there was a CCS level three along my route that day, but the tesla one was far off near the highway. but beyond all of that, the car is absolutely brilliant under the extremely hard use case i’m expecting out of the car and can’t say i’ll b back to a regular car. plus almost all hotels i stayed at had a free level 2 charger on site, even in these rural areas. so i’m technically getting a free tank of gas, no need to worry about oil changes & regular maintenance while very far from home, and let me tell you, after a long day of inspections that auto pilot makes the long drives 500x less stressful. then, a road trip, the vehicle, the whole way back to California. It definitely takes way longer in a ev. i was averaging about 2 1/2 hours drive time ar about 80mph, and 25-45 minute recharges depending on if i had a 150kw or 250kw charger i was stopping at. I can usually do about 1000 miles in a day and a gas car, and that’s nowhere near feasible in an EV. but all that being said, i’ll take the longer trip to enjoy the quiet and smooth and stupid fast drivetrain, slammin stereo, and a few nice snacks while the car handles the drive. i’ve never been able to pay as much attention to the sights of the states i’ve driven through till the tesla. When / if the battery goes on it, i plan to just replace the pack vs the car. it seems like a new pack could cost 20k but i’ve seen reports tesla also has reconned packs for roughly 9k. that’s still wildly cheaper than getting something new if a gas car dies out. and relatively speaking, new pack kinda equals new car as far as propulsion goes. I’ve used every car imaginable for work, from a bright green Mazda 2 to a supercharged range rover, and so far the tesla just seems to be everything you could possibly want wrapped up into 1 car. Before you knock them, you should really spend some time with one. i’m not a green peace type of guy, just someone who found that a tesla does the job better and more efficiently than a gas car.

I never really thought about Tesla too much. Up until the last couple of months I honestly hadn’t ever driven one and had no real desire to drive one. I have a 2018 Prius Prime. I bought it because it was efficient and comfortable. It’s also very good in the snow with decent tires. We live in an apartment complex in the Springs and in August we had those bad hail storms and unfortunately all of the cars in our complex got beat up fairly badly. We put the Prius in the shop in October and the shop gave us a loaner car while they worked on our car. We got it from Hertz and that part wasn’t too bad. I jokingly asked if I could get a Tesla instead of a Malibu and the nice lady obliged and within 5 minutes I was driving off in a 2021 Model 3. It was very nice other than it had a weird smell (it smelled faintly like bananas to me) and it was a little rough with only about 58000 miles. The smell kind of wigged me out so a couple of days later I traded it for another one at a different location that was a 2023 with about a fraction of the mileage (around 13,000 miles or so). It took me all of about 10 seconds to figure out how to put the car in gear but almost a week to figure out how to operate the wipers. lol I am NOT tech savvy so I had a blast trying to figure out how to operate the ins and outs of this quirky car. The loaner we were given was very nice, black interior with a nice red exterior. I was smitten and it still makes me smile at how much fun it was to drive it. I literally made excuses to leave the house just to ride around and enjoy the warm October air and the charging was so easy. People I’d offer teslas to would refuse them simply because they didn’t know where chargers were and it took me just thumbing through the maps to find chargers all over for the Tesla. I found a good one on the north end of town and since I could run the heat and sit in the car and scroll on Facebook it never bothered me to wait and since I’d charge late at night I never felt worried about being bothered. I think the LONGEST I spent at a Tesla charger was all of about an hour or so? And even still it didn’t even feel that long. The downside was that it cost us more to drive the Tesla because we couldn’t charge it at home or at my job even. I think it cost me roughly about $100 or so to charge it over the period of time I had it and I only used the Tesla chargers because I didn’t get an adaptor to charge on a level 3 charger somewhere else. The first car had it, this one didn’t apparently. It snowed while we had the Tesla and the roads were a little sketchy. I’d recommend if you’re going to drive a RWD Tesla get good tires. lol I scared myself hitting some black ice because the car has a tendency to fishtail on slick surfaces. My personal vehicle of course has good all season tires that generally do the trick and since it’s a FWD it is pretty good in snow. The Tesla was well planted otherwise and other than a couple of hiccups with user error it was a smooth transition for me to drive the Tesla for a little while. My gripes were few but I definitely had a couple that made me so happy to have my Prius back and they’re really not even big things. The back window on the drivers side wasn’t aligned properly so it whistled while you’d be going down the road. So most days I had the window rolled down about an inch or so. (It was a literal nightmare trying to trade the first one and I was not about to do THAT again). The build quality with the Tesla has improved quite a lot but the build quality is still hit or miss. The car is very intuitive and responsive but it definitely doesn’t drive as smoothly as my old Toyota does and the seats weren’t nearly as comfortable to me. But other than that I really liked the car a lot. Personally if I was buying a Tesla I’d get the long range Model Y with AWD because it’s a lot roomier and you get a liftback and tons of trunk space. I definitely got a new love for Tesla from driving one and more people should go outside their comfort zone and try it at least once. We give away teslas all the time for rentals because most people are so worried about charging them they don’t want to rent them. My coworkers son had the same kind of Tesla Model 3 that I had and he actually made the switch to a full EV because of it. They got the Ionic 5- and honestly they had the same complaints that I had after talking to them about why they went with Hyundai instead of Tesla. We all agreed that the Tesla is a fantastic EV to live with and hopefully more stuff like it comes in the future. And the coolest thing about living with a Tesla was diving into the world of electric cars and the different types that are out there. For me- I drive 22 miles per day. It cost me about 20 dollars every week or so (using public infrastructure ONLY) to drive the Tesla. Cold weather did impact the range but once the battery was down to about 70% it kind of leveled off at draining quickly. But I digress, I got my beautiful spaceship of a Toyota back. And I’m so happy to drive my own car again. It might not have the features that the Tesla does and it takes two hours to charge on a Level 2 charger- but it is solid, comfortable, the door has a nice thud when I shut it and it does exactly what I want it to do. So for me, someone that is not technologically inclined- I think I’ll stick with my old Prius Prime for a couple more years while I save for a new Prius Prime. ❤️ I definitely would rent another Tesla though. Maybe if they can get the Model Y cheap enough I’ll buy one. lol But I’m taking the seats out and putting the Toyota seats in it though. 💀😂😂

We would not purchase a Tesla for the simple fact that when it eventually needs repair we'd have two choices, Drive (if the car was mobile), ten hours across our island, take a seven hour ferry ride and, then drive another five hours to reach an authorized service centre. Suppose one could truck the car but, that would be very expensive. Choice number two, pay to fly in a technician and then rent space in a garage for him/her to do the work. Our Toyota dealer is fifteen minutes away.

People seem to over exaggerate the cost of fuel.. I drove 1400 miles last week, and spent about $125 in fuel. @ $3.30 per gallon In a Prius getting 50 MPG that would be $92 Your average person driving 50 miles per day to work would spend $23 per week. In that same Prius would be $17 for fuel. On a road trip the gas car is about the same price as supercharging, and you spend less time, and have longer range. My 1400 mile week would cost me about $35 in electricity in an EV. The big time savings for me is the maintenance .. doing an oil change every 5 weeks is a pain in the butt. My next car will be an EV for sure.. But for the average person?? doing a oil change 3 times per year? and having to stop for gas once per week for 3 min? Is that really a big deal.. to justify $28K for a prius vs $40K for a Tesla? Tax credits are for rich people.. they should never be factored in your math calculation. To bad the Prius has a useless back seat now... I would have considered one. I got 423,000 miles out of my last one.

However, if you can't charge at home or work, then the Prius is best for most people. For road trips, I much prefer using Tesla's supercharger network than having to fill up at gas stations. I stop every 2-3 hours and take a 10-15 min restroom break, or 45-60 min meal break. The car is always sufficiently changed to continue before I am ready to go.

I also average about 190wh/mi in the model 3 in town which is about 175 mpge. The prius get 42-50mpg. I also use and enjoy autopilot in the model 3 way more than expected. It does take a little extra time and trip planning but I find most charging stops in my model 3 are only 15-20minutes and it charges faster than I can use the bathroom.:) A prius in my mind only makes sense for the super long 1000 mile type road trips in more remote areas. @@leaaae4638 I haven't had any trouble with cold weather starting, that's actually better in my experience than starting a cold engine in winter. For skiing though, I'll take my BMW X3 because of AWD and extra ground clearance. If I had a long range model Y and losing 30% battery range wasn't a concern then I'd probably prefer taking the model Y. One huge thing I like about EVs is being able to preconditiom them in a closed garage door. Nothing beats stepping into my warmed up seat heaters toasting car in the morning and opening the garage door to adventure into the cold. On my gas cars I have to go out ahead and open the door then get the exhaust fumes filling the garage and all. It's so much nicer having an EV in winter for that one reason. You do lose a good chunk of range in winter but that's only a concern on longer trips where charging is limited. If you have plenty of charging cold is not a problem. I only have my BMW X3 for it's AWD and 8" or so of ground clearnace and we do have some spots where charging needs more work. I'll probably buy an AWD EV at some point but charging is lacking in some areas for me so having both gives me the options I want until charging is better. Charging does still have some gaps where I live so both for me for a little while yet.

I do mostly city driving so having a plug in hybrid that has full EV only power is important to me. That Prius looks hot. I don’t understand how you can compare a full electric vehicle and a hybrid electric vehicle without talking about the implications of still having a gas motor on a hybrid. In the over 10 years I’ve owned a Tesla, I’ve only ever had to buy washer fluid, and Tires. But with a hybrid you still have a gasoline motor and all of the maintenance and issues that come with it. Do you have to smog a hybrid? What about all the moving parts now that you still have to deal with by having a gasoline engine? Ignition timing, valve adjustments, Spark plugs, gaskets, fuel filters, radiator coolant, oil changes, etc. What is the maintenance like on a hybrid? Don’t you think that’s going to factor in to my decision if I am deciding between a full electric vehicle and a hybrid? An EV has almost no maintenance costs. I don’t need you to assess the style, I can do that myself. Duh I can charge an ev overnight. Can you plug the Prius in if you do have an outlet where you park it? Can the Prius go any distance on electric only, like a Chevy Volt? You’ve got to bring in Elon’s politics and twitter into your car review?WTactualF!? I want to find value in your channel, but I am very unimpressed with your lack of valuable, relevant information and unprofessional delivery. 👎🏼
@stephenj4937
@stephenj4937 Жыл бұрын
Modern gas engines don't require ignition timing or valve adjustments, as the valves are self adjusting and the timing is computer controlled. And Teslas haven't exactly proven to be the most reliable vehicles on the road, and require you to disassemble the entire passenger footwell every 2 years to change the cabin air filter. For someone who can't charge at home the Prius is still a great purchase; if you are looking for something that can drive on electric only AND gas, that would be the Prius Prime.

@@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr6444 Reading carefully, I suspect the point of the OP is that they wanted an EV so as to not feed the monster that is the petroleum industry. And they wanted to road trip in it, so the EV they chose is one that charges much faster than most EVs. But keep in mind that a very large number of EV drivers have made the point that, for them, the benefits of road tripping in an EV outweigh the downsides. The benefits include, quieter and smoother ride, and stopping at regular intervals to relax for a few minutes. Owners of some models also report above average ADAS performance. These drivers report that the trip becomes much less stressful as a result. Note also that Tesla Model 3 is the fastest EV for long road trips, as measured by Bjørn Nyland's standardized "1,000 km Challenge" test. (See the table at the end of the driving section of any of his Challenge videos, right after the countdown)

@@webx135 I disagree. The most reliable vehicles ever are BEVs. Any ICE made by Toyota will have 2/3 more moving parts then BEVs, making them inherently less reliable. I owned a Mod3LR for two years. zero maintenance & zero repairs. Just drove like a charm anytime I needed it.
@webx135

@@thenetworkarchitectchannel Oh for sure fewer moving parts. But just because one vehicle is electric and another is gas, it doesn't imply which is more reliable. A Toyota Camry is more reliable than a Chevy Bolt or a Nissan Leaf to an absurd level, for instance. So you can't just point and assume reliability based on drivetrain alone. What's being compared in this case is a Prius and a Model 3. So basically one of the most reliable ICE cars from arguably THE most reliable manufacturer, vs an EV that so far seems to be reliable in terms of power train, but doesn't have nearly the data behind it yet. From a company that is much younger. It's like going to Amazon and comparing a product with 4.7 stars and 10,000,000 reviews against a product with 5 stars and 100 reviews. Ultimately, I myself went the Tesla route because their engineering certainly seems to lean on the reliable side. I'm just aware the actual data isn't there yet.

@@webx135 I respectfully disagree. Both the Bolt (absent the battery issue that only occurred in a small subset) and the Leaf are both MUCH more reliable cars then the Camry or any other ICE vehicle. They do not have a muffler. They do not have a fuel pump. They do not have transmissions. They do not have an oil pan or oil gaskets. They do not have spark plugs. They do not have an engine. They do not have a gas tank. They do not have a radiator. They never need an oil change, transmission flush, or other routine maintenance. I fail to see how you can call a Camry more reliable to an absurd level. I recently purchased a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. It has no service schedule. It never needs an oil change. It is basically a blender on wheels, like all other BEVs. The reliability of BEVs are light years ahead of any and all ICE / PHEVs due to the lack of moving parts.

They said the batteries are designed for 300K miles. And they never actually provide the charge to go the estimated distance. Especially in cold weather (25% loss) or highway driving (10% loss). The only moving parts your describing are the engine and cooling system. You still have brakes (a Prius also uses regen braking), struts, a cooling system, wheel bearings... You still have maintenance as well. I'm so tired of that argument. It's nonsense. The only part you don't have is the engine and exhaust (basically). As the Prius does not have a normal transmission, no belts, pulleys, or chains. You have a $15K motor instead. And a $20K battery. And a cooling system for these parts. And when either go, good luck selling that battery on wheels. I can buy three engines for what one battery costs right now. And WAY more tire costs, and insurance costs!

@ivantuma7969
@ivantuma7969 Жыл бұрын
Colorado average is $0.125 / kWh and at 3.23 miles/kWh for the Prius ... to go 44 miles in EV mode would cost $1.70 plus $3.18 for a gallon of gas to go the additional 56 miles -so $4.88 to go 100 miles in the Prius. I believe using a Supercharger for a Tesla would cost about $6.25 to go 100 miles (using 4 miles/kWh for the Tesla) in Colorado. Home charging your Tesla would bring this down to about $3.12 to go 100 miles (I'm not adding any losses during charging).

Under a "time of use plan" with off peak charging in our area of the Pacific Northwest, electricity is $0.045 per kWh or $0.06 with taxes and fees, so less than half the standard rate of $0.13. Our electric vehicle has travelled 17,500 miles in 16 months with no Supercharging, for about $262 in 17,500 miles. Then, for utilizing that "time of use plan" along with a program for smart thermostats, we receive a $25 credit on our electric bill twice per year.

@@dvader3263 The Pacific Northwest is uniquely positioned - with most power coming from hydro-electric projects that have paid for themselves a few times over (at price of some very confused Salmon). Toyota bets on looks but abandoned practicality and ergonomics. Tommy is 100% right. If charging of the car is not and issue, Tesla wins any day. Especially with the lower price of the standard range RWD and the incentives. Tesla is available for purchase right away from the convenience of your phone. If you want to buy a Toyota, it is made of unobtainiunm. And of course you have to see the greedy dealer and endure an experience comparable only to a root canal at the dentist. As an American I will bet on Tesla since it is 100% made in America. American workers feed American families.

Lol absolute nonsensical gibberish. The Prius, the car itself, is far more practical from top to bottom. The MSRP is far less than the Tesla even including tax credits (which most used ones will be inapplicable for and are also disappearing next year). The base Tesla is RWD only so it is wildly impractical outside California or completely useless anywhere that has real weather. To have a safe Tesla in the vast majority of the US, you have to spend the $45k on AWD LR. A Prius is FWD or AWD so even if it’s less fun it is always safe to drive outside if the worst winter storms. Further, the 2024 Teslas are completely impractical by removing stocks and physical buttons and force drivers to use the tablet instead of physical touch to control the vehicle. It actively creates distractions keeping eyes off the road and on the screen; issues that haven’t existed for the vast majority of the auto industry. There’s a reason third party buttons and speedometers are the most common purchases for any Tesla. The only knock on Prius is the insane dealer markups, but that’s like blaming Jewish people for the Holocaust. I love America. I’m looking at Teslas and Priuses right now, but I am not an insane zealot to make up such an absurdist argument that Teslas are more practical. Just an absolutely insane take.
