Sorry if my voice sounds a little grainy, this is literally a brand new mic (rode wireless go II) since the last one broke again, RODE doesn't really know how to make a reliable MIC and it looks like this brand new unit has some issues. I'll probably send it back and get another one but the next 4 videos all use this mic but hey, I've never been known for my audio/video quality but this is a little below my own standards. And for those that keep asking about the Heco Celan it's like this: Celan is still badass, just not on the same level, treble is more forward on the celan, mids are a little warmer, bass is a little less controlled and soundstage is a little smaller but for half the price of the R3 Meta the Celan is still crazy good and easily the best speaker under $1500 in my book.

@@NemoPropaganda I find Rythmik SUBs to be perfect combo for KEF as those are as controlled while going low and much flatter through out the range. And not breaking the bank like REL higher end offerings. Harbottle SUBs being something new that I got introduced to. Will have to see how that performs and matches KEF speakers.

@@NemoPropaganda Yes the depth of field and enveloping effect that KEF creates is what got me into a tight fix. I am working on a project for my uncle to get his "DEDICATED HOME THEATER" setup but am struggling with the selection of speakers. Reason is that he has KEF Reference + R Meta Setup for his "LIVING ROOM" which will be 9.8.6 Setup(Yes that is crazy for Living room setup but it is what it is). So considering that I am not sure what can give him more enveloping effect and depth of field while having more dynamics than KEF Reference Meta speakers. I think I need to up the channel count like crazy but that gonna take up the budget much higher than what we planned to. So yeah am in a tough situation.

Thanks for the video. I auditioned these in my listening room in a 2.2 channel music setup and they were very good. As good if not better that’s the B&Ws 705 S3 which cost quite a bit more. Mated to their matching stands they are very stable and the matching blue colors look amazing. The enamel finish is brilliant but fragile. I had to return the 1st pair I received in the mail because there was a chip in the enamel in the corner of one speaker. Peace, love and music!

Great advice about speaker purchase vs. Amp/AVR. Awesome review as usual Nemo. These KEFs look like their build quality is clearly world class, surprised about the strong bass. I look forward to comparing them with my Focal 906s one day. My vote is keep the galaxy on the OLED- chill AF.

Aria 906 are great speakers, little more forward in the treble, cooler in the mids, and a lot less bass, overall Aria is a thinner/cooler sound but does a little better at low volumes.

Great review. I had considered these for a 2nd setup to get some contrast from my S400MK2, but ended up going for the LS50metas instead because of budget and the more compact form factor. Seems like a good, well-balanced versatile option.

Just to be clear I generally don't recommend that, it's just this little RSL iA255.1 amp is very good and very cheap. Generally I suggest prioritizing amplification first.

I just purchased a pair of R3 Metas and I will just say WOW! My daily drivers are Magnepan 3.7i's and while they are amazing speakers there is something special about the R3's. Images as you say. I wanted to buy a pair of bookies for the imaging and sound staging they provide. I was torn between the S400's and R3's. I am confidant I made the right choice although I have not heard the Buchardts.. I am basing this off of your current and past reviews. I also own a pair of CSS 1TDX's with bass modules and they are great speaker, warmer, less transparent and imaging is great but the R3's are close to magical. I pair the R3's, and the Maggies, with a pair of REL T7X's, again, in part, based on your reviews. Love your style, descriptions and what I perceive as honest reviews.

I think you made the right choice, if you already own 1TDX then S400 would have felt redundant. They're not identical per se but similar enough that you don't want to own both IMO. As far as honesty, yeah, this whole channel is just for fun so there is no benefit to anyone if its all BS exaggerations :)

Love this review - very informative (and also aligns with my personal experiences). I had the LS50 Meta for a while, but they just never wowed me. They imaged like nobody's business but sound-wise I found myself never being thoroughly impressed. About 5 or so weeks ago, I traded them on on a pair of R3 Meta and wow - they were the missing link. Just so perfectly dynamic - with plenty of bass for me. Incredible imaging and the midrange was so incredibly satisfying to hear. Initially I had them (and the former LS50 Metas) with the NAD M10 V2. While that was a great integrated amp (with a great display), it felt underpowered to me. I decided to go separates: got a Bluesound Node X and NAD C268. I took a shot in the dark that 80wpc as a dedicated amp would do the R3's better service. And incredibly, it did! It now gets plenty loud for my space, and i'm just blown away daily at how authoritative a dedicated 80 wpc NAD amp can sound. If i ever move into a larger space, I'm contemplating getting a 2nd C268 to use as dual mono blocks but for now, i'm more than satisfied. 👍

Just got my non meta R3's set up in a system and I'm loving them. Got them on clearance for $1300 and I couldn't be happier. I know people say the meta's are better but I've also heard a little EQ makes them sound very similar and I do use a 6 band Schiit EQ.

​I do have a question though. These are 4 ohm nominal right? (3.2 min). I have a Denon AVRX6700H which is "4ohm stable" but need to put it in a "4 ohm mode"​. You are saying it works well with cheap amps so this Denon should be ok right for LCR Metas right? Is that cheap REL 4 ohm stable? @@NemoPropaganda

Hey my last post disappeared.... Thats weird... Anyway in your video you say these are good bass speakers, but I am not getting much bass AT ALL. I was wondering how long you broke them in for? @@Jusstisse the bass improved on mine over a period of about 50 hours, at first they were fairly well behaved and then around 50 hours I started to get more and more extension and force. As far as AVR's well... you may not like my answer but I feel any AVR is never the best fit for hifi, they are great as a processor for home theater but a lot of them seem to cut off the bass even if you set your speakers to large, even if you set them in "pure direct" mode or whatever they call it, there is always some kind of processing going on behind the scenes that rob the speaker of its full potential.

Anecdotally, I follow the KEF forum on reddit and these R3 Metas and their non-meta predecessors are by far the most discussed speakers. Most commenters prefer them to the LS50 Metas, usually unqualified but I suspect because a lot of listeners have a mixed HT-music setup and value the separate bass driver/higher bass output/higher overall output that can also fill out a larger room. For mixed use, I think the Emotiva TA2 with the HT bypass or something like it makes a LOT of sense for these speakers at this price point. Right now I use the T9x and LS50W2 for a mixed use setup and have zero complaints - the slight warmth of the REL balances out the analytical W2 so well and provides that tactile, realistic bass that puts you on set - but if/when the W2 motherboard dies I may look into the R3 Meta-Emotiva TA2 combo as an alternative. I had the R3 Meta and loved them, during the trial period I decided to swap them for the R2 Meta for LCR. They are great, and have an almost tower like presence with the bonus of more flexible placement. I went with the KC62 sub.

You should be fine with static images on an OLED if the brightness isnt very high, not displayed for more than an hour, etc. However, OLED technology has come a long way and theres less to worry about in terms of burn in (permanent screen retention, not to be confused with short term retention). RTings are currently doing an extreme test with many OLEDs, multiple thousands of hours do begin to show burn in but its not always severe. And if you do experience permanent burn in, you can activate the screen refresh mode if your TV has it. So technically there is more risk for burn in compared to LCD, but with just a little bit of care i highly doubt you will experience burn in for at least a few years. I actually did a decent amount of HDR (really bright) gaming on the living room Sony A80CJ (i hope thats the model) and theres not a hint of burn in. Your mileage may vary.

Anyways, the next best thing is to take screenshots, mash them together in a video editing software (like davinci resolve or shotcut) to then make it a looping video. This can be very useful for showing off angles on a device like inputs, outputs, specs, etc. But I think a good number of people will prefer the space themed background because it looks pretty.

I'm guessing the R3 Meta's outclass the Celan 3's otherwise he would have brought them up I think. From other reviewers I've heard that the R3's need a bit a volume to shine whereas the Celan's sound good at lower volumes. Nemo, weigh in good sir!

The Celans are insanely good at their price, soundstage is a little smaller than the R3 Meta and the Celan is a little more sparkly & forward in the treble. R3 Meta is slightly more refined overall.

Great review! Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on R3 Meta vs Kanta #1 comparison. Kantas are on sale right now in my local shop for a roughly the same price.

Kanta is technically the better but tonally they are different. R3 Meta is slightly warmer in the mids and has much stronger bass despite its smaller size. Kanta is the more analytical sound overall offerring up more detail and detail that is pushed forward. If you enjoy all the way analytical go for the Kanta, if you prefer some warmth and stronger bass go for the R3 meta.

I’ve been shopping for a used set of harbeth 30.2x d’s for some time without luck so perhaps time to move on to these. Great review. I had the original S400 a few years ago along with a few other back firing bass port. The R3 meta are the first to not be a good fit in my small living room. I get way too much boomy bass. I’ve had these here for about 15 days and I’m returning them tomorrow. Mids and highs are fantastic-best I’ve had so far even my wife says they are really good, except for the boomy bass.

actually studies have shown that if you are 2x the size of the port away from the back wall. there’s no difference in sound from that distance or even more distance out. use tone controls or eq if u need too.

My suggestion. Buy these and a pair of Fosi V3 Mono amps with the 48v 10 amp power supply. Cost is $260 for the pair. Also buy the Topping D 50 Mk 3 which is a two channel DAC preamp with balanced outs, and a 10 band PEQ. Costs $230. For $490 plus your laptop, plus these, you will have a true high end system. Also SVS OG SB 1000 and SB 2000 have subs which have both a high and low pass filters, passive on the high end and active on the low pass. The OG SB 2000's are discontinued but still available in SVS warehouse sales and go for around $500-600 ea which is a complete steal. So a smart shopped, for around $3000-3500 can have a complete end game system which looks good, plays dynamically and coherently with superb imaging.

I really dig the looks of these KEFs -- especially the white ones and the woodgrain ones with the golden drivers. You mention the LS-50 (Meta) but the straight-edged cabinets of these R3s are shaped/sized more like the less expensive Q350s. I sometimes switch between those and some Monitor Audio Silver 100 7Gs (which don't need a subwoofer in my room), but I have used a sub with the Q350s. (I listen mostly to acoustic jazz, so EDM-level bass doesn't figure into it.) Other than the woofer, I wonder how the R3s sound would compare to the Q350s. I don't suppose you've had the chance to make that comparison, but I thought I'd bring up the similarities anyway...

I had a chance to listen to these and they sound really good! They look very special in person as well. But I'll stick with my Focal chora 806 speakers 😊 The Chora sound so dynamic and detailed they are perfect for my home theater. But if I was more music focused I would say the Kef is a great choice. What's your thought? Since you may still remember the Chora.

Personally i wouldn’t pair a kef R speaker with a warmer sounding amp. Hated my Kef / Denon pma combo. That said, on a budget level, the Wiim amp also pairs very well and integrates a streamer and reasonable dac at the same time. Cheers, great review!

Interesting. I agree that I though they struck a good balance, but I thought they were slightly leaning to the analytical side. They pushed it right up to the edge, and I may have preferred it slightly warmer sounding. Just preference I suppose. Nothing like putting a real instrument in the room and playing along, or singing along and comparing. Most speakers sound too dry and analytical compared to the real thing to my ears. I really notice when my friend comes over and plays the piano. It's so much richer and fuller than most speakers. Never a hint of sounding analytical. I'm happy to say my system is currently matching the piano surprisingly well, allowing me to play along without the stereo sounding relatively pathetic.

@@NemoPropaganda I'm a DIY speaker builder and have some big horns, with a total of eight 18" drivers loaded into 6' folded bass horns placed in the corners, along with mid and tweeter horns. It's over the top, and it doesn't automatically work. This setup has active crossovers and is efficient enough that the amp pairing isn't as critical. I just use a 7.1 AVR to power all the drivers. They key to getting good sound out of it is messing with crossover settings and EQ, and trying different horn flares until something works. It's tricky because I don't have anechoic measurements to start with, so I'm trying to EQ the speaker and the room at the same time. Listening to well regarded speakers such as these for comparison is very helpful, and encouraging because going through all this DIY effort really does have some advantages to my ears, despite the measurable faults. I don't regret it, although I doubt I'll ever find the energy to do it again.

Where are you getting 77hz from? KEF's spec is 38hz at -6dB and that was pretty inline with my experience. I know the LS50 Meta with it's single 5" driver does about 75hz, are you perhaps mixing up the two? Speakers were 34" front baffle to rear wall so I'd say I have my speakers are pulled out a good amount. I just had another guy comment that he had to send the R3 Meta back because it had too much bass in his room (i suggested he use tone controls to lower the bass).

It was a genuine question after I saw the R3 meta spinorama measurements. We see the bass shelf design in the response. From what I understand, in your test, the back of the speakers were about 21 inches from the wall. That seems to be close enough to have good bass. Which is good news! I was asking because I usually like a midbass bump (80-100hz) and afraid the R3 Meta won't have enough bass to my taste... Thank you

I have been looking for something with hdmi arc to drive them and your discussion on the cheap amp is kind of pushing me towards the wiim amp. I was looking at the new arcam a15 or a25 to run these but the lack of HDMI ARC kills it. Celan is still badass, just not on the same level, treble is more forward on the celan, mids are a little warmer, bass is a little less controlled and soundstage is a little smaller but for half the price of the R3 Meta the Celan is still crazy good.

I heard that S400MK2 can be much closer to a wall than R3. I generally prefer a more rich, organic tone, so I think I would like S400 more. The bass of S400 also seems better, down to 33Hz(-3dB), where R3 only hits 38Hz(-6dB).

Others have commented that the Kef speakers, in general, are great speakers for low volume listening. Their lower efficiency helps with that along with their extended treble. With that in mind, what model you choose will depend upon how much bass you believe you can get away with without being evicted. Good luck.

man sorry to ask but I have been looking at everything. I am considering Sonus Faber Sonetto III G2 towers, Sonus Faber Sonetto II G2 bookshelves, the R3, R5 and R7 meta and the Dynaudio Evoke 5. I have Sonus Faber Lumina 2 (not amator) and after hearing the Dynaudio Evoke 5's, it makes me regret buying my SF's. have Any opinion of KEF vs Dynaudio Evoke 5's? I listen in a 14x16 room, average 71-76dB (85dB max) also want to use them for Tv speakers too. I am willing to spend the $5000 if I am getting my moneys worth. I have ONE audio store. they have Dynaudio and KEF. that's about it. I want to use a Naim Uniti Atom or a Rega Elicit mk 4 (or if you have something that sounds as good as these as a suggestion).

Soooo the Dyn Evoke range is fairly warm, sonetto is warm too but evoke is even warmer. Kef R range is only a tiny bit warm. It sounds like you are the customer who likes a lot of warmth. If that is the sound you like then buy the evoke towers. I'm not really sure what your question is but it sounds like you found something you really enjoy and that's great!

@@DG-rc6rr totally different my bro, R3 Meta is a bass monster and warmer overall, DWX is more open, effortless and expansive but much less bass despite the larger size. DWX's expansive sound would not be considered warm when compared to something like the R3 Meta. DWX is great for anyone that feels small speaker sound small or anyone who is sensitive to scale & effortlessness. Treble refinement is a little better on the R3 Meta compared to the Standard DWX.

I've only heard the 606 S2 but I can't imagine anything cheaper than the R3 Meta being better or even close. Around the normal mans price point, figure products $3k and below you generally get what you pay for. There certainly are some products that punch above their weight but those are few and far between. The R3 Meta is the top contender in the $2k territory, nothing cheaper can touch it.

The biggest difference IMO between blue collar stuff like speakers up to $3k and stuff that's closer to $10k is refinement, micro detail, and the sepparation and space between everything. Platimon is in a different category but it is 3x the price. If someones hobby stops at the R3 Meta you're still getting crazy good sound.

I never have and never will care about specs but the -6dB point (aka plus or minus 3dB) on paper is 38hz. As far as the finished version of the 1TDX, that version comes with the upgraded crossovers, and I have not heard it.

I've only heard the oberon 1 so I will compare it to that. The oberon 1 is much smaller so maybe a weird difference but R3 Meta is much darker in the treble than Oberon 1, R3 Meta midrange & Oberon 1 midrange are both slightly warm, Oberon 1 bass is tonally rich while R3 meta bass is more technical and very powerful.

similar sound overall but the Platimon is more neutral in the midrange and with proper amplification the Platimon will be far more refined, resolving, and revealing with more of a natural presentation. Both are class leaders at their price points but there is not a single $2k speaker that can do what the Platimon does just like there is no $30k car that can do what Porsche 911 does.

@@dylanlewis3647 oh yeah! Books: Three Body Problem quadrilogy, first book is rough but the quadrilogoy is insanely good. The Final Architecture Trilogy by Tchaikovsky was tremendous fun. The Wandering Earth is an amazing collection of short stories by Cixin Liu, I can go on for awhile here but I'd say those are great books and the easiest to get into is The Final Architecture Trilogy. TV Shows: Killjoys, Dark Matter (sadly cancelled), Star Trek Discovery was great but its social commenary was a little preachy at times. Foundation on Apple TV is extremely good, very different from the book but very enjoyable but honestly my favorite has been the animated series Star Trek Lower Decks. Of course all the old Stargate shows rock. If you want a fun movie Space Sweepers is a great Korean scifi movie on netflix.

Understandable, if Mission is not willing, they should keep it. Yeah I saw that allready, but they a bit more pricy and I belive the 5" woofer has not as much kick as the 6" in the 3030i, sound should differ a good bit. The 3030i delivers outstanding sound for the money!

Nice review. I am having kef r300 arcam a19(700euro new) and irdac (400e new) which to me was a well rounded system for 10-11years. Lately i am considering updates relates to sound and simplicity (less boxes). Do you think a jump from r300 to r3meta is worth it (i do feel like i cant give up the kef sound ;) ) or maybe the difrence i minor and i could keep them but move to better integrated amp like yamaha rn1000a unfortunately i dont have space for 2000 with more power. The other thing i was willing to ask is how r3meta plus amp compare to Buchard A10 i dont mind going to active speakers if i am not giving up sound quality...thanks....

Personally I like separates more, this is something I talked about in my A500 review but for some people who are happy to embrace this more modern approach the A500 have a lot to offer with it's tuning profiles, room correction, and incredibly powerful bass. But I am not a fan of DSP personally so I will always prefer a passive speaker and purist amplifier instead.

Hi there. Wanted to update this discussion. I have tested the A10 and in the end returned them. In my room no matter which master tuning i have tried the voices/vocals were always behind everything else which was not for me. I ended selling my kef r300 and both the R3 meta and honestly I am very happy. For me there is a good enought jump in dynamics and overall refinement especially in the highs. Now I am looking for a good update of my amp. Would choco sound emei be a nice jump from 700e arcam a19 that is 10y old? I am looking for something to bring body and richness but not to be analytical. Maybe something slightly on the warm side of neutral could be ok. I am also thinking to buy a new dac ...most probably denafrips enyo or the new version with i2s. What amp you would suggest for the kef in the 1.5-2k region?

I love the TA2, the Emotiva sound is more clean/clear and not warm at all so the R3 Meta may sound a little less warm and a little more forward in the treble but the TA2 has tone controls so you can tailor that a bit.

I have these speakers. I think your review is dead on. The bass is very good but i do integrate a rel in my system. The weird thing is i can be lostening at mid low 80db range and it does seem very loud or fatiguing.

unless you rroom is very big or your listening habits are more extreme I think an honest 50w RMS per channel is enough for most people and most speakers, of course some speakers may need more in larger rooms as mentioned but I think 75w RMS at 8 ohms is plenty of power for most people including myself :)

they are similar tonally but the R3 Meta is better overall. If you are using an inexpensive amp like iotaVX sa3 or emotiva ta1 you may not notice the difference as much however. R3 Meta scale more with better gear where the Elac needs better gear just to be part of the same conversation.

@@NemoPropaganda, I'm running a 175-watt x 2 Bryston power amp and the ELACs' midrange is so laid back and soft it sounds like it's coming from behind the stage. No real attack with snare drum or vocals. Kind of dead sounding to my ear. I'll see if I can get the R3 Meta from Crutchfield for a trial.

Drum attack could be related to the room, or if you're looking for that chesty prominence you could feel that might require a larger speaker. We all have to work within our limitations, unfortunately that midbass region isn't something I'm very sensitive to so I'm not the best person to help with that. Maybe a subwoofer can help? Something like a REL 1003 MK2 might be an easy fix!
