Nice review, Thanks!! I personally chose the Dynaudios paired with Hegel H190. I didn’t regret that choice. Yes it is less open and sharp on top end compared to a Kef but as per i need a system able to play all genres of music and especially old punk and metal recordings..i tought it could made it. This set up is no fatiguing at all and i can enjoy hours of relatively loud music without disagreement… is that the goal in the end ??!! Need to sacrifice some air, openness, sparkle to achieve that. @NemoPropaganda22 күн бұрын
Hi bro, if they are all the same price for you or very close in price the easy choice is the R3 Meta!! For sure not Sonetto, that one is too warm for theater and the bass has more bloom than accuracy, you don't want that. The Fyne F500SP is a great speaker overall but kind of small and not the strongest bass, for theather you want to make sure you have headroom for the loud peaks, R3 Meta is better for that. 1723 by Arendal is great but does not have as strong bass as R3 Meta, so yeah, R3 Meta is the easy choice unless there is a substantial price difference between it and the Arendal 1723. I know I keep mentioning bass and maybe you have a subwoofer too but still you want your main sepakers to have some bass and fullness or they will sound small. Hope that helps bro!

I would agree with Nemo's comment. Had a many showdowns over the Covid lockdown times. Buchardt S400 (MK I), Kef LS50 (non meta), and Elac Adante AS-61 was my comparison I would put in that bracket, and had them all in house at the same time. Kept the Adantes, as they were more resolving and analytical than the LS50, and had a bigger presentation. Buchardt were too bassy in my smaller space at the time, and I remember finding the detail or treble lacking comparatively. S400 were great for the aesthetic and enjoying music more than critical listening. My last showdown with all three was Elac Adante AS-61, Tekton Double Impact Monitor, and Dynaudio Special 40. Adante were too revealing for all my music tastes, and I sold because I could profit. My room was too small to give the Double Impact a fair shake, but same thing as the Buchardts there, too much bass. The Tekton I remember the least, as I remember getting my ears cleaned around then, but recall what most people say about the Tekton sound to ring true. Kept the Special 40s. They walk that line of musical and analytical well, without sacrificing air or spaciousness. Tracks shine when well recorded, and while they can murder some poor recordings, they are much more forgiving than more analytical types, with more bass than you would think. Had them for about 3 years now, but I have a pair of R3 meta coming, and if I like them, it may replace my S40s and SVS Ultra home theater, and roll both into Kef R series.

I have had my eye on the Buchardt for some time now. Recently the Wharfedale Aura 2 has peaked my interest albeit a little more money. I listen primarily to vinyl 95%. 5% cassette. What can I say I am an analog guy. I listen from everything to Jazz, classic rock, singer songwriter, even Metal. I currently have a pair of Paradigm Prestige 15b and a pair / dual SVS SB 1000 ProS. Even though through the app and help from SVS I have them dialed exclusively for bass extension. To get down to 22 to 20hz. I also have them isolated with the SVS SoundPath Feet. A bamboo board and the IsoAcoustics subwoofer stand. Yet my roommate still complains about the “Thump”. Like crystal clear detail and tight sharp bass. What would you recommend to get and put my subs in storage. At least for a little while.
@NemoPropaganda9 ай бұрын
hi bro, unfortunately bass of any kind can and will disturb roommates & neighbors, such is the struggle for many of us. Good tight bass is usually a function of the speakers, amp, room, and placement but the tightest bass around this price is gonna be the CSS Criton 1TD or 1TDX and the non DIY option would be the KEF R3 Meta. But if you're anything like me when you stop using a sub you'll turn the volume up instead and end up with the same problem and those CSS like to be played a little louder to sound their best. With that said the R3 Meta may strike the better balance of keeping the volume down but still having a full sound. Last suggestion is try to demo Dali speakers, I personally don't like their treble but their bass is pretty darn good and might be up your alley!

I wish I could demo both before purchasing but unfortunately, I'm unable to. I listen to mostly Rock, metal, and pop, also jazz every now and again. Can you comment on what music you were listening to? A couple questions about your word choice when describing audio reproduction. "Most warm, middle warm, least warm" What do you mean? Does that mean the R3 is analytical and bright-sounding and the Dyna would be a vailed sound? What do you mean by Bloom? I haven't heard this term used. "Bass has a lot of body?" What does this mean? What do you mean about the bass being more technical on the R3 vs the others? and the Dyna having more flavor and warmth? Can you describe how that translates to music? What does "Air in the mid-range" mean? "and air and sparkle"? What speaker do you prefer overall? I'm curious where your preferences lie. I really appreciate you reviewing products. I bought a Rythmik E15HP2 mostly based on your subwoofer reviews. It is a fantastic subwoofer that blends seamlessly. I will most likely purchase both the S400 and R3 Meta and compare them directly, going with the one that excites me the most and keeps me engaged in the music. Cheers!

it's difficult to describe something we can't see (sound) I don't believe I can describe the description any further, usually when someone doesn't understand the words I use it's because they have not heard a lot of speakers and don't have the data points, IE they're very new to the hobby. This is not something I can really help with, after hearing a few different speakers most audio guys intuitively understand these descriptions, it's the reason we all use them to describe sound the way we do. It's almost like trying to describe a broken heart to someone that hasn't experienced it at least one time. It would be very difficult so my advice is get out there and try to demo some speakers if possible. You're also welcome to hop in my free discord and chat with the guys but it will still be difficult to understand the description of sound without more data points. Like how would you describe a violin to someone that has only heard a guitar. Hope that makes sense.

@@NemoPropagandaWell, I loved Evoke 20 more because of this warmth and fuzziness which creates big, tall soundstage even though smeared. Didn't love special 40, though they look so nice. Now I have Evoke 30 and I'm torn as they are more neutral (as SP40 is) and I can clearly hear it's better quality than Evoke 20, but just not pleasant with many recordings (at least in my room) and the soundstage is more focused, much better centered but at the same time it doesn't have the height of Evoke 20, sound small because of that. Evoke 20 certainly colours the sound, some male voices sound VERY different on Evoke 20 than on Evoke 30 (or SP40). Evoke 20 can make unpleasant male voice into something nice to listen to. It's probably fake but it's nice in real world listening. So I would say SP40 for focused listening, Evoke 20 for all day of fun with music at a cost of detail.

Nemo: when you talked "sharpness" and "attack" regarding the B S400 treble resonse, perhaps you meant faster transient response? Sharpness and attack typically are code words for fatigue but in the context you used them it would seem to be in the context of faster of cleaner transients?
@NemoPropaganda6 ай бұрын
No sir, I don't use code words, everyone should take what I say at face value. If you think there is some hidden meaning behind what I say it will only cause you to misunderstand. dark bright or neutral refer to treble quantity, fatigue is a little less understood by most but generally is more an indicator of refinement or lack of for the given quantity of treble. Sharp, soft or smooth refer to treble attack, how much resolution or clarity the leading edges have.

the H190 is a very flexible amp, the pairings are more personal taste IMO, if you want it ultra smooth & warm the Evoke 20/H190 combo will do that, H190 is mostly neutral to slightly relaxed. WIth that said If I had an H190 and was required to choose 1 of the 3 I think it would be R3 Meta. Interesting comparison BUT you didn't say which was the high volume champion. I heard the LS50 falls apart at higher volume so I assume the R3 does as well.
@NemoPropaganda9 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say the LS50 Meta fall apart at loud volumes, it's just a little speaker my bro! It's kind of amzing that it can get as loud as it does for how little it is, anywho, I digress. I don't test maximum output, most full medium sized bookshelf speakers (like these) can easily play loud enough for most people so it's not really a question I get very often. The only time I've seen speakers like these not get loud enough is if someones trying to play movie soundtracks that have infrasonic bass or they have a really big room and sit farther away and should be using towers instead. If I had to guess which one could get the loudest I'd say probably the R3 Meta.
@user-xg6zz8qs3q9 ай бұрын
It's no surprise that the LS50 falls apart at higher volumes. The cabinet is very small with lots of foam and bracing. So there isn't much air inside the box. The coaxial driver is quite small too. That's how you get 85db sensitivity with the KEF LS50. That's very low. And coaxial drivers have a lower excursion than separate drivers. Because if the midrange driver flexes too much, it becomes like a variable horn around the tweeter. You get a Doppler effect that way. The KEF R3 Meta has a bigger box with more air inside and a separate bass driver to ease the load off of the coaxial driver. It should play significantly louder.
@nc34199 ай бұрын
I remember the Paradigm SE-1 could play pretty loud given their size and didn't fall apart when I cranked the volume to nearly 85% or perhaps more of the volume on an HK3490 but its still limited output in a small cabinet. Other small speakers I had couldn't take that much. Boston Acoustics M15 was a bookshelf, larger than the Paradigm and was very dark and dull at low volumes, even at more moderate volumes. But give it power and it sang. But I couldn't listen to that level today and even back then, a few songs or so and only if the neighbors weren't home. That was the speaker designed for loud.@@user-xg6zz8qs3q

For me it's more about aesthetics, I just love how a bookshelf looks on a stand. There certainly are some bass heavy affordable towers around $2k (like polke reserve towers but those do not have the refindment of the R3 Meta) and I have also heard many towers around that price that actually have less bass than something like the R3 Meta. For example I would take any of these speakers over the Arendal 1961 tower as these 3 all have tremendously deeper bass. The idea is generally you'll get better SQ out of a $2k bookshelf than a $2k tower. Would you rather have a pair of KEF Q950 towers for $2200 or a pair of R3 Meta for $2200? The R3 Meta sound quality is a big step up from the Q950 tower so that is a big part of the appeal for smaller higher end speakers.
