It's crazy to me that this video hasn't gotten as much attention as your other stuff, because it's so crucial. I got hired at a big fancy fintech unicorn just after finishing up a bootcamp and to be honest, my coding skills and technical knowledge weren't a big factor at all. It was how well I managed the OTHER interviews - particularly the behavioral - and showed how I aligned with what the company values were, as well as my ability to learn as a junior. It was six different interviews! The tech interview was the easiest!

I’m glad to hear your experience! Behaviour is becoming a huge part of recruitment and to separate great from good candidates especially when everyone has comparable tech skills

Best way to get a job is to emulate your interviewer people love helping out others when they see themselves in them

I hate it when people say oh describe a difficult problem you solved, because as soon as you start explaining it, it sounds so easy. Actually happened to me in a google interview, i said well it seems like an easy thing but it it isnt until you actually attempt do it, then i explained it. And the guy said, that sounds very easy, i said well yeah but when you try it you find it isnt, he was like well no. Also its hard to know what to say, which will impress them, any normal coder has done this millions of times but they cant really judge if its "hard enough" or "impressive" enough to "wow" the interviewer. I feel like something like "i wrote a z80 assembler" is what theyre after.

You know that actually sucks, because people who are really diving deep in to programming and math aren't usually the ones that are very social and talkative, so choosing a programmer based on their social skill level is kind of opposite of what you want. And yes you are hot af.

In the first 5 minutes, I usually know if I can recommend a candidate. The emphasis is on the word “usually”. The remaining 55 minutes are for those introverted weirdos worth hiring and totally introverted, and those extrovert “sales” who may fool me in the first 5 minutes.

I like your content Catherine however I do believe the impression interviewers get occurs within the first 10 seconds, before anyone can say anything meaningful. In short, it's stuff like your outfit, smile, attractiveness, and unfortunately skin color that are critical in those first few seconds. So it's not like anyone can prepare for it. My advice is this: if you feel the interviewer is being derogatory, unprofessional, or very frowny for no apparent reason, then immediately after the interview send feedback to the HR manager or recruiter about your interviewer's overall demeanor. That way they can know that, in case you failed the interview, it was due to the interviewer's lack of impartiality and professionalism rather than your own shortcomings. Too many interviewers are bucking on the fact that their behaviour is not monitored, even though with so many virtual interviews, it can be monitored and reported.
